Barn Sprite Number 6 Thinks Pink

I decided to paint the Number 6 Barn Sprite because it looked terrible and needed to painted anyways. What better paint job to give it than one in tribute of one of the most colorful car gals of the 1960s Donna Mae Mims. Mims was the first female driver to win a National SCCA Championships in it's then 20 year history.

I must say when I first saw the car in pink I had my reservations but after you explained the story of Donna I think it's a great idea.

Cars from my era, worked on many of these in the late 60's. Can still remember the part number for the points. They were Lucas L19 or L19V (V was for "ventilated" which was just a hole in the middle of the contacts). Great to see people keeping these old cars alive.

Had no knowledge of this lady so this was educational for me . Not sure about the funeral Corvette though.😨😨 She obviously had a sense of humour . I met Sir Stirling a few years ago and he seemed to be more interested I my wife than me , he did love the ladies! As you've gone this far you may as well make it as accurate as you can . I think Donna Mae would love that . You certainly impress me with your passion and knowledge of not only the frogeyes but all of your collection. Thanks Steve.

Your knowledge of these primitive cars is very impressive. I rewired a 69 MGB and thought I was a God, nope rookie at best. You rescuing these old beauties is amazing. How did someone so young learn all of this? I am 71 and I thought I was a gear head, hardly. My 74 TR6 is still my favorite ride and I wish I knew these old classics half as well as you. My respect sir!!

You are the sprite whisperer! Loved the story and the restoration. I had a 1965 Austin Healey sprite that was my first car. It was a beautiful light blue metallic, originally the flat blue color I could see in the trunk and engine area. I loved that car, but boy was I in over my head being a broke teenager. I bought it for $1500 in 1979. I sold it after 3 years as I couldn't afford to keep fixing it as it was my only transportation and nobody knew how to fix it and were always messing it up because of the positive ground. It drove well, but simple repairs like brakes, wiper motors, leaf springs, little things were hard to have fixed properly. I miss that car. Thanks for restoring them so we can appreciate them today! Love those cars!

Amazing that your 6 Sprites have such solid bodywork. There's another great video of an older gentleman's 4-year restoration of a bug-eye Sprite (an hour and a half long!), but the body he started with was a mass of rust. He basically had to replace the entire body, one welded piece at a time.

I was in an automotive Explorer Boy Scout group in Savanah GA back in 1966. At some point, we got an invitation to be the pit crew for Donna Mae Mimms when she was driving her Yenko Stinger. I don't remember much about the race which I think was a week or two after the Daytona 24 Hour. There might have been a Porsche Carrera 6 at the race. And for one of the races, Peter Gregg might have driven a Fiat 124 Station Wagon.
