BARMOUTH WALES - Snowdonia's most popular seaside resort!

We visit BARMOUTH Wales in the Snowdonia National Park to visit the most popular seaside resort in Snowdonia and have a look at the beach and town centre!
Also watch Portmeirion 👉🏻 • PORTMEIRION | Full Tou...
Barmouth's location on the west coast of North Wales and lying between a mountain range and the sea on the mouth of the river Mawddach is arguably one of the most beautiful locations in Wales. It rests just within the south west corner of Snowdonia National Park and is steeped in a history rich with connections to the shipping and slate industries.
Barmouth, or Abermaw or even Y Bermo as it is known in Welsh, is southern Snowdonia's most popular seaside resort with breathtaking views of Cardigan Bay and the picturesque harbour. The town's beach, Abermaw, is west facing with a mixture of sand and some fine shingle and is ideal for bathing and watersports.
The town can get busy, a land train runs along the promenade and there are traditional donkey rides, swing boats and amusement arcades. Barmouth beach is vast with good disabled access to the beach and all leisure amenities, including a full range of shops, cafes and pubs are within a short distance. There are several delightful walks of varying distance which start in Barmouth and follow routes into the hills beyond.
The Welsh town of Barmouth has one of the best settings of any holiday resort in the UK. It has some of the best beaches in Britain, and sits on an estuary with exceptional views of the Snowdonia National Park.
The old town is well worth a visit with its steep steps and slate-roofed cottages on the side of a mountain. The harbour is beautiful and you can walk across the spectacular Barmouth Bridge spanning the river which can be an ideal activity for an evening stroll.
The beach is large and perfect for sunbathing and games and surfers can often be seen depending on the swells and time of year. Kids love the beach yet its size means those wanting to get away and relax in peace and quiet can do so easily.
It also has a large range of shops, pubs, hotels and other accommodation, a funfair from March to October and amusement arcades. There are also a number of Caravan parks in the area.
Barmouth is the starting point for the Barmouth to Fort William Three Peaks Race and involves sailing from Wales, via England, to Scotland (389 miles) then climbing the three highest mountains in the UK - Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis : a total of 11,000 ft of climbing and 72 miles running. Hard work or what!
"With a fine sea view in front, the mountains behind, the glorious estuary running eight miles inland, and Cadair Idris within compass of a day's walk, Barmouth can always hold its own against any rival." These are the words of William Wordsworth who visited Barmouth in the 19th century, and it would be fair to say that today’s visitors wouldn’t disagree with him. The seaside town, that is one of Wales’ most popular resorts, is gloriously located on the Mawddach estuary and its blue flag beach is like a golden carpet laid out in front of the towering Snowdownian backdrop.
The harbour, the townhouse and the roundhouse are all situated in Barmouth’s picturesque old town that is awash with character and charm. Indeed when J.R.Tolkien visited in the early 20th century he was so smitten with it that he used it as a model for the town of Hobbiton in The Lord of The Rings. Away from the sandy beaches, donkey rides, arcades and promenades there is plenty more to see and do, including the RLNI Lifeboat Museum and the Ty Gwyn Museum, whilst the ferry to Fairbourne comes highly recommended for different view of Barmouth.
Barmouth is southern Snowdonia’s most popular seaside resort. In summer, its big sandy beach is a magnet for visitors, yet there’s so much space along miles of unbroken sands that it never gets overcrowded.
If you want to visit Barmouth or come for a holiday on the beach at this popular seaside resort then watch this Barmouth Walking Tour and let me know if it's inspired you to come!

My late wife and I love Wales and have travelled on every heritage railway, even the Cambrian coast railway. Barmouth was one of our favourite seaside towns. We love the place. It is colourful and has wonderful sandy beaches and stunning views. Yes, it has its fair share of 'tat' shops, but they have to cater for everyone. Our favourite stop was the Bath House Cafe. We always sat outside on the deck overlooking the bridge, estuary and beach. Thank you for this vlog. It brought back so many happy memories for me.

Thank you so much for this video footage. It has brought back so many childhood memories. I was born 1963 and my aunty Terry and uncle Dick had Endeavour house on the sea front. I spent every summer and Easter in Barmouth. Up until the age of 16. I use to walk the streets of Barmouth on my own. I use to watch the fisherman brining in their catch at the harbour. I use to play on the beach all day making friends and memories. I had a friend called a Robert Trigg. His parents had the hotel next door to my aunties. I believe he is now the mayor for Barmouth. I will share this with relatives in America. They will be pleased to see how beautiful Barmouth still is. Thank you thank you thank you. 🙏🏻

Love Barmouth, spent many lovely camping holidays in Llanaber, just outside Barmouth when I was a youngster. Usually whit week. Lovely times in Barmouth. Find it very annoying when they close public roads for these races, running , cycling, motor bikes or cars, not right! Once our daughter had been to work and leaving to come home there was a race. Although nothing was happening ,the would not alow her to cross the road to her car. Took 4hrs to get home, normally half an hour. Sorry Neil, my moan for the week.🤣 Love Barmouth and your video as always. Feel better now. 🤣👍

BARMOUTH There are three names for this little resort at the mouth of the beautiful Mawddach estuary. Apart from the English one, there are two Welsh versions: Abermaw, a contraction of Aber-mawddach (the estuary of the Mawddach) and Y Bermo. A dominating feature of Barmouth is its railway bridge, spanning the wide estuary and made almost entirely of wood. Barmouth Bridge is a Grade II* listed single-track wooden railway viaduct across the estuary of the Afon Mawddach near Barmouth. It is 820 metres (900 yd) long and carries the Cambrian Line. It is the longest timber viaduct in Wales and one of the oldest in regular use in Britain. The viaduct, between Barmouth and Morfa Mawddach stations in Gwynedd, is used by rail, cyclists and pedestrians and is part of the National Cycle Route 8. Tolls were collected for foot and cycle traffic up to 2013 but this has been voluntary since 2017. To allow the passage of tall ships, the bridge incorporated a drawbridge, which was replaced between 1899 and 1902 by a swing bridge, which is no longer operational due to a lack of use. There is no provision for road traffic. Barmouth is the starting point of the Three Peaks International Yacht Race held in the summer; competitors sail to Fort William, stopping on the way to run to the top of Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis.

First went to Barmouth when I Was 5 in a 1950 Ford Popular,I lived in Manchester and it took hours to get there at a dashing 45mph, no motorway’s in those days all A roads but there again I bet we didn’t see more than a handful of cars the whole journey, those were the days no traffic jams,I have been back since with my own children and they loved it as I had done,I will never forget going in that old POP and I’m now 77,great memories, lovely place to visit, might go again sometime if I get the chance.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts David . The old ford pop may have been slow but at least you didn't have to charge it up ! Coming from South Staffordshire there isn't much motorway in our journey , only a few miles on the M54 . My favourite part of the journey is when you get past welshpool , then it's twisty turney roads and mountain passes that make your ears pop all the way .

Used to take the kids to Barmouth in the seventies and stay over in a Dandy Camper. With having the Children, it was mostly an itinerary that suited them. Didn't get to see a fraction of what you have put up in this video. And so much sand there. They wouldn't miss a few lorry loads, do you reckon, to drop off on that cobbled stone strip that fronts Llandudno, because it would benefit from it. Apart from the Cake Shop, you don't say much about where you stop off to eat. You have got me wanting to visit Barmouth again, so kids are grown up. But before I go anywhere I like to know three things: Where's the Parking, and how much and for how long; where are the Public Conveniences, and how much and who does the best Fish and Chips. Just end by asking you if your arm aches much after holding that Camera up as long as you do, and if there isn't a shoulder cam option of some sort. Enjoy your vids in any event.

  • @johnkelly320

@@GimbalWalkTV it was a Dandy which we towed with a VW Camper. It didn't take to long to put up, but I was in my twenties in the seventies. Our stop at Barmouth was during what I can only describe as Gail force conditions and I reversed the Dandy up against a Hedge to try to combat the Wind, as soon as I got the roof up on the Dandy and the Gas connected, the Family left me outside to attach the Awning to the Dandy. At one point I was holding it with two Hands while it tried to fly over the Hedge, with the wind and rain hitting me hard in the face. Only the next day did I find out that if I had let that Awning go, if would have ended up in the Sea, which was virtually on the other side of the Hedge. It was my first foray into Camping and I'd bought a brand new Gas bottle only to find out that when you go to get your gas bottle filled, which is what I thought would happen, you actually just get an old one ,albeit a filled one, back. Next time out was to Porthmadog, Black Rock sands where by now I was getting more experienced, thankfully. If you are waiting for the part of the text where I say ' yay or nay to whether I have lots and lots of enthusiasm of the Camping experience I can't wait to pass to others, well I would say this" if you go equipped with the kind of electric everything that is available today, then yes, ok". Go for it. As soon as the kids got to that age where Camping with Mum and Dad just wasn't ' Cool ' the the wife and I sold the set up and started booking ourselves into hotels and that was the end of our Camping. Some of the modern luxury motor homes of course offer 'Home from Home over night stops and given the outlay, certainly encourage you to get some value back by regular use. You could of course try hiring if you feel you would like to try before you buy, as it were. Or don't buy at all and Just hire, if you only intend infrequent outings. Hope this has been of some help.
