This one made a bit of a cameo back in November last year, but I think it is well worth a closer look today. The sapphire makes it, and the fact that it is manual wind adds a certain something. Decent value to. Anythign is better than a Daniel Wellington though, no?! Cheers, Jody

Never thought a picture of my home town would show up on my fav watch channel. That roundish Bauhaus Building is a restaurant in Dessau called Kornhaus. Had lunch there plenty of times. Dessau is where the Bauhaus school building is still preserved and you can find bits of Bauhaus architecture around town.

Been there on a Bauhaus pilgimage!
I've own mine for two years and it still looks great, especially for the money. I'm still getting compliments on this piece. Nothing to lose and everything to gain for the price. Great job Jody
I've watches ten times the price, but for my wedding I decided to put this Sea-Gull on my wrist! Elegant and so thin.
I picked this up a year ago, and it keeps perfect time (when I wind it lol), and looks as good now as when it was new. I havent been able to find a slim simple dressy watch that I prefer more for anything like the price I paid for it (£90 from memory). Theres something satisfying about a hand wound watch - and this one has so far exceeded all my expectations. Great video as always!
Great review, I have been really tempted by these. The 39mm case and hand winding movement are perfect for that style, far to many are 42mm which would wear like a dinner plate!
Great review of this watch. I am wearing the same modell daily in the office for 1,5 years now. Although I am mostly sitting at my desk, I have sometimes go into the lab. I paid below 100 € - for this price it is perfect: Sapphire crystal against scratches, slim enough to fit under my shirts sleeve, dressy enough if a customer visits and cheap enough in case I inreversible damage it.
"Form follows function" -- Nearly unbelievable what all came up fafter the design of Max Bill, who only designed a kitchen watch! So thanks to him and to you Jody! 😉 This Sea-Gull is a nice alternative to the Bauhaus watches from Junghans, Jacques Lemans or Nomos. Great review again, just go on Jody!
This sea-gull has been on my list for a while, only thing I’m not sure of is the over styled 2 and under designed 4. That’s one of the main reasons that I have the Junghans, to have Max Bill design your font is a touch of class (check the 4 on it). I have the quartz and it is maybe overpriced but I still love it.
@jordancalvey

I agree, I think they got the font on the 2 wrong. For me this messes up the clean Bauhaus look.
@goldsilverlight
Жыл бұрын
Wrong. This is just the style of this font. At the hypotenuse & horizontal strokes' convergence the angle there it has a little treble for the 2, but for vertical strokes it has nothing just like the simplicity of the 4 and 1. You can't put the same frill on the 4's hypotenuse & horizontal strokes' convergence the angle there just like for the 2.

I think the same way you do. The numbers 10 and 8 are also not very pretty. Also, the seagull logo had to be done in a sans-serif font. In addition, there is a short minute hand compared to nomos... The design is in dire need of improvement (Translated by Googleator 🙃)
Hi Jodi, thanks for your lovely, relaxed review - as always a great pleasure to listen AND watch you! In terms of "Who is the original?" I think it was Stowa. They came out in 1937 with few Bauhaus style watches, among the ANTEA model, which they relaunched in early 2000. NOMOS just exist since 1990 and came out with their Tangente model in 1992. Maybe the "Lange" from Lange & Söhne came out a bit earlier before the Antea in 1937. Finally: both - Lange & Söhne and STOWA - got the dials from formerly largest dial manufacturer worlwide WEBER & BARAL, from Pforzheim, Germany. Maybe we need to consider W&B as the original design creator... Keep on going Jodi!
I've owned the Braun with a black dial and a small second for a couple of years now, and it's really a great watch. I paid about 50 EUR for a used one, and even though the quartz movement is nothing special, it's reliable and fulfils its duty. But I have to admit that more than once I almost pulled the trigger and bought a Nomos, but so far reason won. Unfortunately... ;)
The no date saves it and the no hommage crowd have the baton model, This is a great no nonsense dress peice. Small seconds are a fave of mine.

Indeed Mr Blonde. Thanks for commenting as always mate.
I really like the simplicity of this watch, and the style/looks, size, and price. I'm going to pick one up for sure. Thanks for the review, Jody.
Bought one quite a while ago and just got around to wearing it so I looked for a review and here we are. Thanks for confirmation of this purchase.
And after watching: Love it. It’s a watch that does exactly what it set out to do. Classy, minimal, affordable, elegant.
There's also the german microbrand Sternglas with their Naos quartz. I have one, it's got sapphire crystal too, one of the best straps I've gotten and have their own design even if they follow the Bauhaus aesthetic. I love Braun but the original AW models which are made in Germany and therefore more expensive. For under 200, the Naos is a great alternative

I agree The Sternglas Naos quartz with no second hand is good quality and satisfied my Bauhaus itch Their automatic watches cost a bit more but still fall into the “affordable” category
WoW! 350° amplitude and 0.0 beat error"!! Listen carefully. You can hear the Sea-Gull movement crying out, "Please Regulate Me". This could be among your most accurate watches. Edit: The Chinese penchant for hands that are too short is apparent when compared with a Nomos. 08:23

I own this one and it's a lovely watch. I have it on a blue vintage leather strap and it looks great on wrist. Quality is very good for the $125 I paid. Way better than other watches in this price range
Great review. I was looking for review of this watch and this helped me a lot. Keep up the good work. Subscribed
I have one. I love it. It runs about +4 seconds a day. It was better than i thought it would be.
Great review. I like the layout of this watch. Next time I find myself looking for a dress watch I would include this one on the consideration list.
I do love a Bauhaus style watch. I have the Rodin's version if this one. I also the up getting a really Bauhaus piece in the form of the Junghans Max Bill, which I absolutely love.
Hi Jody, great review as always. Talking abt Bauhaus style watches I got a Rodina a couple of years ago. If I am not mistaken it also has a Seagull movement albeit automatic, hence a bit thicker than this one. Don't know if these Rodinas are around any more though. Enjoy the weekend mate!
That is a gorgeous bargain, thanks for highlighting it, almost as classy as my DW291.
Great spec and a lovely looking piece (thanks to Nomos for that bit).
Yeah.... Good little watch. Nice dimensions. Thank you
I think the Stowa is the real thing, not the Nomos. On their website, Stowa shows the picture of this watch, which they were manufacturing in 1937. Stowa was one of the first watchmakers to incorporate the bauhaus dials to their watches, it seems. Thanks for the review!

The first bauhaus watch was the Patek Philippe Calatrava, then the Junghans Max Bill.
Great T-Shirt choice on this one Jodie. James Hunt would be proud!
I've been looking for a Max Bill style watch for a while and I think this one nails the spirit rather than the letter of the design! Lovely watch, I just wish it came in a 34/35mm size since 39mm is a bit large for a dress watch on us slim-wristed people...
the orient maestro needs more recognition, especially when talking about this sort of minimalist design..
Love the blue hands on the light coloured dial. A shame they don’t do a no numbers version.
Others have mentioned Sternglas, but there is also Tapferkeit, a brand (allegedly) out of England (the package came from England so I choose to believe them) which is cheaper than the German made Sternglas and doing a similar Bauhaus influenced design. I think they're made in China but I don't think they advertise that. They're doing a bit too much with the German for a brand that really has nothing to do with Germany, it borders on cheesy. I bought the Freiheit automatic on Black Friday for a nice price and have really enjoyed it. It scratched the Max Bill itch I've had, at least for now. I've given it the nickname the Minimum Bill. There's a few complaints to have about it, the rotor is kind of noisy and it's only mineral crystal on this particular model, though I believe most if not all of their quartz offerings have sapphire. It has an exhibition caseback which is nice I guess, but the movement isn't particularly beautiful, the signed rotor is barely legible, I would rather they have spent that money on sapphire for the front instead. Anyways, it might be worth checking out this brand for anyone else looking for some broke boy bauhaus that isn't a direct knock off of a Nomos (looking at you Feice)

@@jjakiefte2165 that's a little disappointing, I know they aren't AP prices, but Junghans ain't Casio either, I'd hope for a little sound dampening of some sort. Maybe it's not possible with the dimensions they want to keep their watches at.

Hey Jody! Great review of the watch as always! Keep up the good work! Can I suggest you give Skagen a check? They have some fantastic watches, although they are quartz. I own a titanium one and get nothing but compliments when I wear it.
My Rodina R005 is, together with the Steeldive SD1970, one of only two homages that are left in the box. It’s very similar to this - and has a Seagull automatic movement. Had it for 5 or 6 years, it’s a great watch. I’d wish however that I went for the version without a date back then.

I have one of those kicking around in the back of my watch box too! Hard to justify a Nomos or even one of these Seagulls when she's still going strong a few years after first going down the affordables and microbrands rabbit hole.

Love ur show. Love your attitude. Very well done reviews. U have caused me to buy more watches than any other reviews.😂
I have one of those. Nice watch. My wife’s stepfather went to Bauhause in the 1930’s.
Love it, must admit I have 2 Sea-Gull (ok, well 1 true sea-gull and a questionable 1963) but I might just have to add another to the collection now!
Hi Jody, A great review and nice looking watch. Keep up the good work.
I got this one at the start of last year. It's a fantastic little watch, but not an everday wear. The crown is a killer. It's so small and you're forced to wind it. I would save a bit more and get a similar styled one at the same Sea-gull store, but it has a bigger crown
Great looking watch. I almost purchased this on the last 11/11 sale but it sold out quickly. I ended up buying the similar looking FEICE automatic and it’s now one of my favorite watches.

@@JustOneMoreWatch The FEICE is really well constructed and has a Seagull automatic movement. The supplied leather strap is also surprisingly decent.
Another elcheapo Bauhaus watch is the Aristo Bauhaus quartz 4H193. It has a Ronda quartz but is from a German company (wouldn't be surprised if the case comes from China though). I'm quite happy with mine.

Hi Jody, i also mention the xiaomi syb01, as a minimalist style chinese watch, it is a sort of a smartwatch, i've been wearing it for 3 for years, and it a really nice one. I recommend it.
I’ve seen this watch and it peaked my interest. I don’t have a watch anything like this… Out of the 60+ I have. I’ve got to give it a go at this price and see if it’s for me… Thanks Jody!
Great review!!. Thank’s
Love the Hesketh shirt!
It's a nice watch for the money, however more importantly I love the Hesketh Racing t-shirt, Lord Hesketh was so cool, barking mad but cool.
I like this style of watch, don't have one in the collection.....yet. If this had a bit of colour on the dial ala Nomos i'd buy it now.
The Hesketh racing t-shirt is sweet!
Thanks Jody it's another great vid but have you tried Tisell? They have a great bauhaus.... Miyota 9 series no small seconds but still very homagy to the nomos.
The most iconic for me would be Junghans Max Bill. Hand would as well. Pure style!
Very nice, lovely clean dial and very attractive. The crystal looks very good but personally I wouldn't mind an extra couple of mils to allow for a rotor. Definitely a great buy though.

Well, you could go for a Rodina TB-001 instead. Lookswise closer to the Tangente than this seagull, i.e. the digits 2 and 4 dont have curly bits.
I find a brand like Invicta with their crazy monster watches at one end of the spectrum and these Bauhaus inspired watches at the other end. The Invictas are not for me…I think they are ugly. At the other end I find most of the Bauhaus watches just a bit boring. But looking forward to researching some of the many Bauhaus inspired watch brands mentioned in the comments hoping for one that creates an itch! Because we can all use Just One More Watch!! Great video. Well done once again Jody. Merci!
I love that Sea-gull is proudly and unashamedly Chinese and they don’t try to hide that.
Good review as always. I have had the version with arabics at 3, 9, and 12 for several years, and it is a great dress watch. Are you sure Marc carries this one? I know he carries the 1963 chronograph, but I have never seen this Sea Gull on his site.
8:46 This exact style of watch has been around since at the 30s, Longines has a similar styled one from the era. I'd say like fliegers it's a standard style. Not a nomos clone. As for the amplitude, well it looks high but I can't find lift angle information for any Tianjin watch. I suppose you'd need to go back and find the amplitude to find the lift angle. Amplitude you'd have to measure yourself which would be interesting. You got a slow-motion video of the balance?
I have the Nomos Club datum and this looks good . It would have been better with a bit more colour and don’t like the 2
Got mine for about €90. Great for the money. Love it
Another choice you could go for Junghans maxbill, a very varied range of watches and movements.
Another grrrrreat review Jody!!

Nice watch at the price. If you are prepared to pay about twice as much, but still not in Nomos territory I have been looking at the Tisell Bauhaus, Miyota 9015 with the date at "6", with Sapphire on the dial side.
Nice one, can't go wrong.
This will never scratch the itch. Just save up for a Junghans Max Bill and buy it in Germany and get the tax back if you live outside the EU.
The one other german brand besides Nomos I would instantly associate with the aesthetic, is Junghans with their Max Bill. They have basically grounded their whole brand identity on these watches, the same way Nomos does.

Agreed.
Another option for this style of Watch…Lilienthal Berlin….a German watch. I own one and love it.
The Bear tee is back. Best o' gear.
I like it on the mesh.
The ultra budget minded could be satisfied with a Casio MTP-VT01GL-1B2 or 2B2. Though that seems more like a bridge from a Daniel Wellington to this watch or budget levels north (Junghans Max Bill probably hitting the cost:authenticity ratio sweetly)
When I think of Bauhaus I go to the Junghans Max Bill first. The size of the Sea-Gull would be an issue for me. I have a 38mm Sternglas Naos auto. which I purchased on their funding campaign so at a better price than they are now asking. With the white dial and narrow bezel it looks very big on the wrist
I did buy my 12/3/9 version from Marc at LIW a few years ago. It seems he doesn't sell these models anymore. A wonderful watch. The leather strap is a bit underwhelming. But beautiful, otherwise....
I think everyone who uses this watch loves it.
I have a Parnis and it’s very nice
Brilliant review, mine is now on its way from China, hopefully not a slow boat!!!
Looks so much nicer on the Milanese. I would have to regulate it though
Very nice looking watch
When I think Bauhaus I always think of Junghans Max bill. I couldn't afford that so I picked up a Sternglas (German Micro).
You should check out the Feice Original Bauhaus watches. I thought for sure that would be one of your alternatives.
very nice, the '2's are a bit wierd, but still nice, think i'll buy one :)
Could also consider anOrdain? Though not exactly budget and currently have a waiting list.
Please have a look at the updated Proxima MM 300 Jody...it looks promising.
Full review of San Martin Tudor like watch coming soon?
356 amplitude?!? That's almost a full circle Jody. A healthy amplitude is 330, 340 but more than that the impulse pin starts knocking on the outer side of the pallet fork horns and causing damage over time.

I would imagine the lift angle is off
It's a Orion homage, the Tangente got differents lugs, and 6mm thick.
Sea-Gull Truly makes some elegant watches that are pure class. I find myself struggling to pick just one to add to the collection first, Thinking I may be picking up 2 or 3 at one time rather then starting with 1! The thin, dressy appearance really is perfect for a lot of people! I love the blue hands and the dial pops beautifully!
Stowa Antea is my favourite
Definitely a handsome piece. Just wish that the movement hacked, especially as it has the small second hand. You should have a three-way dialogue with Marc and TGV; that would definitely draw views! Cheers mate!
Feice FM201 and FM301 are both good candidates for alternatives (if you can ignore the rest of their copy-machine catalogue)
I have a Carnival Automatic with the exact same look ... not sure if it is through Sea-Gull or not .. can't tell what the automatic movement is think it might be a Seagull ST17.
Hesketh - just wish they had a little more $ for development/testing. Nice bikes though!
You should review Accurist and Sekonda watches.
Was wondering bout this seagull - vs nomos glaschutte
Seagull, my favourite watch company
No $ for you naming Marc but big respect. Thanks! Didn’t the Nazi’s consider Bauhaus to be degenerate? That’s good enough for me … to like the watch!
I like your shirt, go to found this racing team. The watch I like too, I guess that not the quality as a Nomos but not looks bad.
That watch is owned by me, where the price was good too. As with the watches prices, can be higher or lower. My complaint, the crown could be a tad bigger.
Honestly, I think a hexalight doomed crystal would really have made this watch pop. I understand they scratch but they are so easy to take care of with toothpaste or polish it's a non issue IMO.

As a German I love how you say Braun. It sounds nicer then when we say it.
@thewheelieguy

The strange thing is in American adverts for Braun they pronounce the name as "brawn". My guess why they do that is that "brown" doesn't sound European enough, or possibly just that it's the way many Americans would pronounce it if they were reading aloud. I am fairly fluent in German, and the first time I saw a European TV ad for Braun my mouth dropped open in surprise and I thought "Oh wow, that *is* exactly how it should be in German, not how I've always heard it"
