Barefoot Micro Main 27s & Footprint 01s - are they WORTH IT?

SPONSORED BY EAST ROOM SUITES: eastroomsuites.com/
The Barefoot MicroMain 27 and the Barefoot Footprint 01 are some of the most revered near-field monitors in their price range. Whether you're a studio owner or a home studio engineer,
these monitors have probably been on your radar at some point. In this episode of Gear Review Tuesdays, resident Production and Engineering expert Ignacio Scannone breaks down the features, accuracy, cost, and competitive edges of these two sets of monitors.
Measure the MM27s against the Amphion 218s and the Focal Trio 6bs to see which monitors you should buy based on your situation; and learn how the FP01s stack up against
the PMC Two Two 5s.

    Great review, really nicely done, very concise and honest. I moved away from my prior MicroMain 26 Barefoot’s to KII’s plus Focal’s. I find the Focal’s much easier to work with, especially at my preferred lower mixing volume levels, and the Kii’s are the tightest, most confidence inspiring monitors in terms of wide translation and identifying and addressing issues. I found it MUCH harder to get anywhere near these benefits from my MM 26 Barefoot mons that I finally sold last year.

    I just wanted to share, I went from KH-310's and have had my Footprint 02's for about 5 days, and truthfully I'm finding so many more strengths that the Barefoots have. Amplitude harmonic distortion relief, driver phase, and just absolutely SMOOTH buttery low end on the footprints. And they're smaller drivers. I LOVE them.

    @@Studioomrey I don't miss them at all. Lol. Especially with the meme tech.. such a helpful too. The low end is a beast of its own tool. The upper bass and lower mids from the 310s were still cloudy to me just as they were with the KH120's. A very wide speaker also gave me an odd perception of the image. Also phase is no longer an issue. Seriously though the amplitude distortion was huge for me. Also I will say, like this video says, there's some times where I can't tell if brightness from FP02 is over hyped in my mixes, which headphones and meme, (and also good ole' referencing a favorite song) come in handy as all hell. The FP's aren't as neutral or "warm" as the 310s but to my ears easier to work with than the Neumanns. However #1 rule. Test in your room. Vintage king has a pretty lenient assist with returns.

    Same situation. I had the 310s with stereo kh750 subs, room corrected with the MA1 mic. Now, mids were amazing, the 310 mid driver is something special. However, the tweeter always has this crunchy metallic vibe and the highs were always behind the mids so it was hard to tweak highs with a balanced mix. I would mid the mids, tweak the highs and sometimes blindly make some final adjustments. 310s have a softness. Footprint02, current setup, are much more aggressive, sort of reminds me of using NS10s, I can hear mic hum, crappy audio edits and micro details on professional mixes much better then before. Currently loving the Footprints02, super balanced. I am going to try a buddy’s Focal Sub6 with them out of curiously. See if the Sub6 at 100hz and below let’s the 6.5 woofers punch a bit harder. Great thing in the Sub6 is you can clean bypass and run the full range into the footprints.

    I have the Micromain 27 version 2's with a set of excellent condition Yamaha NS10's powered by a Bryston 4 B SST and the NS10 setting on the barefoots is pretty much perfect. I have all my monitors level matched with a sound pressure meter. The only real difference is the slight change in soundstage because there's no way to have both sets of speakers occupying the same space. Currently the NS10's are up for sale. Love my Barefoot Micromain 27's v2's.

    I had the footprints for a few years. With those side firing bass drivers you need to seriously consider SBIR. If you don't have at least 3' clearance to your side and rear boundaries, neither of these pairs of speakers will sound accurate. No matter how much treatment I added they just didn't sound right. But hey before I moved I was working in a wider room and they were fantastic. It totally depends on your space.

  • @SDA-Sound

    @SDA-Sound

    What’s SBIR? I have an odd attic studio that is 25’ long and 9’ across, my desk faces a long wall so the side firing bass drivers send sound about 8-9ft before hitting walls. It seemed to me also that I’m not hearing them right. Has anyone ever used free standing panels near the speakers to deflect the bass into the listening area? Or is that a no no?

    @@CREATEEDUCATEINSPIRE idk how those sound but if they are comparable the focals sound wider like the music wraps around you and the stereo imaging is extremely clear, i listen to music ive heard before and notice crazy panning details that i never noticed before. he barefoots sound very straight like the music beams at you. The bass on the footprints is also very good it goes super duper low. You can also hear transients very clearly on the barefoots while the focals are silkly smooth. Ill mix a kick on the focals thinkig its good then switch to the barefoots and notice it snaps a bit which makes it easy to fix. Id honestly go with the barefoots if i were you but thats just my two cents. Those focals are good but i just think the barefoots in your case will serve your mixes better. The focals honestly "sound" nicer on the ears but i do think mixing drum transients is much more transparent on the barefoots. If you get the barefoots i think youd be stunned at how drums sound on them.

    @@CREATEEDUCATEINSPIREdo not connect a sub directly to those monitors to take load off. They are not meant for that the barefoots are built to be subby. If youre gunna spend 3k on monitors and have an expensive woofer connect them seperately with a monitor controller i use the presonus monitor station its like $300. You can just filter the back of the woofer im sure if you want it to feel like it "extends" the barefoots. I solo my woofer often but never at the expense of another monitor.
