What did you think of my suggestion? Was the amount reasonable in your opinion or was I way out of bounds? Trust me, I think you should have more always. But setting a goal to get to the requirement level is a good way to make sure you've got that covered to a degree. How are you going to carry all that with you if you have to bug out. In a shtf situation do you really think you are going to be safe in your home in some subdivision? More than what you can carry, plus squirrel away someplace is foolishness. The reality is there are probably going to be dead people. With the amount of Ar's in public hands, you will probably find enough ammo on the ground amongst the dead.

Did you just say you saw AR mags over $100? Are you taking drugs? Or just stupid? It’s one or the other. Your most expensive AR mags for an AR10 are $35. Normal are $9.30 for Pmag M2 and as cheap as $6 for a bundle of Amend 2 Pistol mags for Glock pmags are $12 and Glock brand mags are $25-30. Only sig mags are up near $60.

I get what you're getting at. But all manufacturers have tolerances. One you buy today may be slightly diff than the one you bought 3 years ago. I would suggest filling it once and guarantee its function. Then put it away. Had this happen with some unimags (can be used with 7 different calibers) bought a couple, liked them. Ordered a few more. Used some. Sat others back for later. Then when I went to get one that was sat back it wouldnt fit it all my lowers. Granted bc I can use it with different calibers I was still able to use it. But not as intended. Point being, vet your stuff.

I would like to add that you should mark, date, and number your mags. It will greatly help in identifying your mags when you are in a class and are dropping and reloading. It will also greatly help in identifying your mags when they start to wear out and need to be replaced or repaired. I honestly have no idea how many AR15 mags I have, with one exception. I know I have just two (2) forty round AR15 mags. As for 30 rounders, 20 rounders and 10 rounders, all I can say is I have a lot. I use all of them. Some fit certain shooting applications better than others. As for handgun mags, I have more than I can count. As for AIC or AR10 mags, I have a few but much less than AR15 or pistol mags. Bottom line you can't have enough mags. I am a huge MagPul and Lancer fanboy. Both have worked well for me and I have thousands of rounds through both brands. However, I personally recommend staying away from Amend2 AR15 mags. I have three Amend2 AR15 mags and they have been horrible, but let me qualify that I am all 300 BLK. I have to confess. I am lazy, which is why I have so many mags. I am a preloader. Before I go to the range or to a class, I load all the mags that I will need for that day at the range or the class. Loading mags on the range or in a class is a waste of [time].

Also just because you are on the move does not mean you cant have a car/bike that has additional storage room. I generaly dont see that much appeal of going into the wilds... Have you ever lived for weeks out of a backpack and in tents? I have. And its awfull (3weeks and longer). A home protects me from the elements better than any tent could. I have higher storage capacity and what not. As long as the building is not on fire i see few reasons to leave it. Living in a tent in the wilds is romantic. But no long term, heck barely even a short term (2month+) solution. Sure if you go out and are constand on the run in the wilds than i would only take a pistol with a spare mag. And the lightest build ar with a surpressor and 90-120rounds total.

A word on load outs. US uses 7 for infantry standard load out. Infantry has resupply, preppers do not. I would suggest 10 rifle mags in a carry loadout, giving you more of a chance to disengage from any contact to need to break off. For Storage I would say at least 2x that number per rifle for quicker full reloading of kit if things get really hairy.

Two places I routinely lock them up are at home and in a vehicle. However I keep spare mags unlocked and accessible at home and in a vehicle. If what I have on my person is insufficient should a need arise, I am most likely going to be at my home or have my vehicle nearby and have quick access to those extra resources. ✌️

7 mags is standard military loadout for training purposes. During the GWOT as a Infantryman we carried a minimum of 14. And sometimes 21. And bandoleers. My nephew who is a former Recon Marine they would carry 30 magazines loaded. And enough bandoleers to reload all of them. Plus 9 quarts of water. All of their gear, plus lots and lots batteries.

Given how there are so many makers of AR mags, I have started trying to buy at least one of each make I come across. For serious use, I have Pmags and GI aluminum, but I like to rotate the others for range use. As soon as I can, I load them to standard capacity, then see how easily they lock in under the closed bolts of my AR compatible rifles. I recently had one that refused to lock into my X95 with 30 rd. For pistol mags (especially Sig), I load them all the way and let them sit, to loosen the spring a bit. I needed a loader to get the last round into P320 and P365 mags the first time, but after a couple of cycles, I could top them off with my thumb.

I like your standard MP! I like having more then 1 handgun for several handgun types so if a handgun has an issue temporarily, you have loaded mags to insert into something else (i.e 2 Sigs that take the same mag, 2 1911s in .45, 2 caniks, etc). I like the 21 AR mags because then you have 3 loadouts all ready to go assuming 6 on a carrier and 1 in the well. I also like to have 1 of each brand, caliber, etc, brand new in the box just in case.

More magazines is definitely better. I’m thinking at the bare minimum, one needs 10 magazines per weapon. Seven for your combat load, three magazines for your range load. You can also rotate out your combat load magazines with your range load magazines to ensure your magazines are working properly. Me on the other hand, I am somewhat like you. Seven magazines for my Combat load, seven magazines for my range load, and seven magazines in reserve that I rotate out. But I’m also adding another 7 to 10 magazines that I’ll keep in its original packaging and not use. Which you could possibly use for ultra reserve stocks, or barter with if necessary. 😃👍🏾🇺🇸

Having extras at home is vital. To save cost over the years I’ve trimmed my platforms to use the same mags this way the mags can be used in multiple platforms. @magicprepper i think you're on the right track. I think the right question is how many mags should you have loaded? How many do you need to have in your rotation, and how many should you have as backups. I think 6, plus 3 in the package for handgun... and 16 + 16 rotation (32 total) plus at least 17 in package min in case one is a dud.... I use the double mag link clip (for pmag) for the primary. Always ha e a double clipped as primary, and then your 6 on the carrier. If its a real shtf shtf... i would want nothing less than the exact same to "replenish" with at least once if not twice. Im no operator at all... but i did work with many of them and picked their brains after a few firefights and. If thats their mentality, i figure its not a bad starting point... especially since our re-supply is well... basically us!

Veteran here. Four deployments. Seven magazines was the carried "loadout," but I wouldn't say it was an idea of "this is all I'll need," and more of an idea that it was a reasonable, carry-able amount that you could replenish later. You could carry around those seven mags for six months, or you could use them all in one hour.

For me personally, I do 2+1 for handguns +5 for training and 4+1 for long guns +6 for training. Also think it's a good idea to stockpile spares, because you never know what could happen. Stock up on what you can afford, within reason. I do 2+1 in the gun for handguns because someone put the idea in my head once that you should have a backup if one of your magazines fails or malfunctions. Also, if it's all you're carrying, that extra two magazines may come in handy if you were ever to run into a rare hypothetical situation where one magazine wasn't enough. I do 4+1 in the gun for long guns because you'll never know what you'll need. Unlikely that you'll need that many, but, I think it's a good baseline and it's a good loadout if you have a carrier set up. Number of training mags really is just to cut down on reload time.
