Barcelona is famous for its architectural treasures ranging from striking Gothic cathedrals to works of fantastical modernism. In the historic Gothic Quarter, some of the streets and buildings date back to the 12th century. It is home to iconic religious structures including the stunning Cathedral of Barcelona. In contrast, this Catalan city is also home to Antoni Gaudí, the founder of art nouveau modernism and the designer of some of the most beautiful buildings in the world.

Barcelona is known for its world class food markets. The Mercat de la Boqueria along La Rambla is the oldest food market in Spain - and has global notoriety, including the tag of best market in the world by CNN.
Barcelona is a city of cozy, hidden cafes, unpretentious taverns, world renowned restaurants and bustling nightlife. El Born, our preferred launch point, is one such neighborhood or “barrio”.
Xurrería Laietana
Located within the Gothic Quarter, Xurrería Laietana is a small café offering the best churros con chocolate in Barcelona. They have limited seating within a century-old building that exudes old-world charm. The churros are crispy on the outside and soft and savory on the inside - perfect for dunking in the bitter-sweet hot chocolate.
Demasié
Demasié is a small, local pastry chain with locations in El Born, including this spot across from the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar. They feature the city’s best cinnamon rolls, but also have a large variety of cookies, coffee and more. Make no mistake, however, it is a cinnamon roll lover's paradise.
Dora Tapas Bar
The Dora Tapas Bar is found within l’Eixample near Antoni Gaudí’s Casa Milà and Casa Batlló. We found it to be a pleasant location to chat with others, share hot and cold tapas, and enjoy refreshing sangrias. The mussels - or mejillones - were exceptional.
El Jardí
Not far from the hustle and bustle of La Rambla in the neighborhood of Raval, is El Jardí. It is tucked within the beautiful gardens of the Old Hospital Santa Creu. It is a great escape to relax and enjoy a slow, quiet bite. They feature cocktails and an extensive wine list as well as a nice array of tapas - all superbly prepared. The tacos con atún were delectable.
El Chigre 1769
El Chigre 1769 is an epic tavern within El Born. It is a self-described “Catarian” bar - and the place where we fell in love with the sweeter Spanish vermouths and legendary smoked sardines. El Chigre combines the culinary heritage of two lands, Catalonia and Asturia of Northern Spain, creating dishes of impeccable taste to be enjoyed in the warm, casual atmosphere generated by a 250 year-old building.
Can Ramonet
In the seaside neighborhood of Barceloneta lies Can Ramonet, a long-established restaurant filled with great food and contagious joy. It is housed within a tavern that was founded back in 1753, the oldest in Barcelona. The restaurant pays homage to its heritage and serves up exceptional rice dishes with a contemporary twist. It was here that we enjoyed the legendary Spanish paella. The gastronomic experience did not disappoint.
Ziryab
Found within the lively neighborhood of El Born, Ziryab is an Arabic/Catalan fusion tapas bar with Lebanese wines. It is among the top 1% of restaurants in all of Barcelona, located within an old 16th century family palace and stable. The restaurant evokes the charm of the old city with its brick walls, wooden beamed ceilings and eclectic personality. The “Mana-eesh” spiced lamb cradled by pita bread was simply “to die for”.
Suculent
Located near the Güell Palace in the Raval district, Suculent is one of Barcelona’s famed Michelin star restaurants. A modern entrance leads to an old-world atmosphere where there is one simple choice to make: the classics menu that serves up 9 chef-chosen dishes - or the suculent menu with 13 such preparations. The plates range from grandma’s Catalan comfort foods to exotics such as stingray and capers. Add incredible wine pairings and mouth watering desserts - and you have a night that will not soon be forgotten.

This is the best video that we have seen about food in Barcelona! Excellent explanations about each bar and restaurant. My Wife and I are traveling this April, 2024 to Barcelona for the first time. So, I got few bars and restaurants to check out. I will visit the Lebanese bar/restaurant for sure since I’m part Lebanese, and the bar with smoked sardines!!! Can’t wait 😮
