She made her own of the score of Hello Dolly... for all that she was too young for the role... she carried it off beautifully and her singing throughout is sublime... go Barbra go!

Greatest example of talent overcoming any qualms about miscasting- Barbra brings such conviction to "Parade" and elsewhere, the notion Dolly really should be mid-life becomes a non-factor.

The Hello Dolly movie was woefully out of place in 1969 Vietnam/Nixon-era America. But it has aged very well. It's like an old-fashioned operetta with great singing and dancing. It evokes a long-ago world. A wonderful step back in time.

She looked really beautiful in that movie. You are right the last note is pure genius sung with unbriddled passion capable of shatering glass. One of the greatest female vocalists of the century!

And the movie was a complete flop. Hired in her late 20s for a character in her 50s, Hollywood once again got it wrong. Natalie Wood in West Side Story, was a prime example because she couldnt sing a note. Absolutely the most awful casting was Lucy as Mame, a 3 pack a day smoker like she was on I Love Lucy, most musical numbers in movies were dubbed by singer Marni Nixon. Yes Streisand could sing, but she barely pulled it off as Dolly. Ask Carol Channing.

I first saw it in a college town revival house in the mid-70's. I was afraid the long-haired 'hip' kids would be jeering at this old-fashioned musical but they loved it. And I never understood the 'too young' thing. Chronologically she was, but Streisand's very unusual face doesn't really look like any specific 'age' to me. I don't think anyone could've been better.

  • @abigguitar

+Raymond Maurer Though Streisand performed both songs admirably, the director would have to go with this version. The other one has so many tempo changes and breaks, no marching band could ever play a song this way while marching. This version is the only version that makes sense in the context of the film's setup to use a marching band in a parade. Actually, I'm assuming the alternate version may have been intended as a Streisand single rather than be used in the context of the film. Streisand sometimes re-recorded her film tracks in a more contemporary way for use on an album or to be released as a single in support of the film.

She was obviously too young for the role. She was obviously cast not because she "fit" the role better but she was a bigger movie star than the other actresses who had done the role and were more age-appropriate. But Streisand OWNED this part by the end of the movie. She sells the hell out of the songs and is note-perfect for the comedy scenes.

@brinhauptmann8133: She didn’t own ANYTHING by the end of the money. She was still too young, her voice does not sing in character but like a pop singer and her comedy-imitating Mae West-was because Gene Kelly offered her no help; I mean she’s no dancer! The studio got a name property and kept adding “names” as in the star or director but in the end it didn’t mix well. The film was not a success and lost money on a $28.8 million investment $8.8 million over budget.) The could have hired Streisand for “Irene Molloy”, a director like Vincent Minnelli or Gower Champion and then a middle aged star to play “Dolly” who didn’t have to be Carol Channing. But they didn’t.

irvinemuscle No, your comment should be "It's a production that happens to be a musical" a play and a musical are very different. A play is a production with no songs performed. Then there is a play with music which is a production were there are songs performed during the production, but it's a performance in the play world as well, with an audience in the play. A musical is a production that has songs performed about whats happening in the show with no in show audience, though there may be musicals that have songs that also have in show audiences, ex. Jersey Boys, and Dream Girls. Then there are Opera's which are productions were everything is sung, and no lines are said.

Dolly did not flop. It was one of the highest-grossing films the year it was released. Fox simply went bananas and this musical was blown way up and way out of proportion at an astronomical cost. With Streisand it about broke even. There was a large negative cost for advertising. However, with sales to television, VHS and DVD's it eventually nosed into the black. Without Streisand as Dolly it would have grossed ten dollars.

Gene Kelly and Walter Matthau were a$$holes to Streisand. It was her idea to start with a close up and then expand at the end of this song to show the whole parade. Kelly wanted to start wide and end with a close up. He filmed it both ways and determined Streisand’s way was better. She could have directed it much better and then wouldn’t have had to put up with Kelly’s and especially Matthau’s vileness.

I never understood the "too young" business. Dolly could easily be 30 (which in 1890 was not really young): married at 16, widowed at 23. It makes perfect sense. And in those days it wasn't considered entirely respectable for a widow to remarry. So can you blame a "too young" Dolly for singing "Before the Parade Passes By"?

Thanks for the upload but please consider in the future a video with really smooth transitions. These jumping boxes merely detract from the soundtrack and take the viewer's attention from the real focus: the music.

Streisand was, of course, miscast. She was way too young for the role. But she sells the hell out of the songs and walks away with the role. I love her performance.

The indomitable Barbara Streisand. I hate her politics which are disturbingly left-wing liberal but I could watch her perform for literally hours on end. The lady is the essence of talent with a gorgeous voice. You go, Babs!
