I still remember watching Barbie movies every Sunday with my sister when we were little. As far as fantasy goes, Barbie had a special place among all forms of media i have ever consumed. The old folklores being presented through Barbie movies was always really fun to watch. To me, Christmas Carol, Swan Lake, Rapunzel, the 12 dancing princesses, the nut cracker, etc. Are stories I know because of Barbie.

If anything Lego Movie taught us is that movies based on toys could work as long as it's handed to the right filmmaker. And with Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach writing the script with Greta directing it, I'd say it has every opportunity to be great 🙌

@@Merdicano Absolutely, I remember people expected The Lego Movie to be terrible and be 2014's biggest flop since it's a movie that nobody ask for, but with Lord and Miller wrote and directed it, they managed to create something unique and special out of a simple brick toy that everybody love. Basically it offers something that we didn't knew we needed which is something that the Barbie movie should do

Believe it or not. The beginning of the trailer is actually very accurate. Before Barbie existed toys that are meant for girls were just baby dolls. This is because girls had the expectation to be mothers. Now Granted there have been dolls out there that are way way older and made out of wood and stuff that are not babies that girls can play with but it still gets the point of cross. After all Barbie was created to be an adult or a teenager because the creator of Barbie saw her child using her toys as adults that had jobs and named the barbie doll after her daughter. And the thing that she is wearing is a reference to the first Barbie doll. I think it's quite interesting that a Barbie movie is willing to talk about a little bit of its history.

Copied from wikipedia: The earliest bisque dolls from French companies were fashion dolls. These dominated the market between approximately 1860 and 1890.[8] They were made to represent grown up women and intended for children of affluent families to play with and dress in contemporary fashions As apposed to Pandora dolls that date as far back as the 15th century but where only used by adults and the fashion industry

This film is so creatively brilliant, with lots to say about fantasy and imagination , real life (Los Angeles-style), escape, self-determination, and the roles of men and women in the patriarchy. The 2001: A Space Odyssey opening is just grilled to perfection. The young girls who came dressed as Barbie to the screening got a lesson in intelligent messaging and it may have sailed over their heads...or yet it may be a defining, awakening moment in their world. For the older "girls", it was an affirmation of their experiences. The film is really high level stuff, with very good music and wonderful production design. Everbody should see it who has a heart and mind, and a sense of humor..

I haven't been to a multiplex in over a yesr, and I took a chance and saw "Barbie" over the weekend, and I am here to tell you that if this 65 year old man can have this much fun at a movie, then I can easily imagine at just how much delirious fun this wonderful motion picture is providing for the young people out there. This is what going to the movies is all about, and the stuffed shirts who run Disney had better take notice----or they need to quit and find a new line of work! This Greta Gerwig is one talented filmmaker and she deserves the huge success that she so rightly deserves. I am a classic movie lover, but I will never be able to keep a straight face again when I see The Dawn Of Man sequence in "2001: A Space Odyssey". And then I watched Oppenheimer... No dichotomy, there, just a spectacular moment where two stories expand our world...

It’s so easy for the ’offended’ ones to focus on the patriarchy/feminism message whereas there are quite a lot of other layers in the film like parenthood, sisterhood/brotherhood, life choices, consumerism, etc. Yeah, it was enormously bold of Greta Gerwig (and Noah Baumbach as her co-writer) to choose this direction for the film, but in the end it all comes together so beautifully that the ending never fails to bring tears to my eyes (even the 4th time watching)🥹 and yeah, we’re Kenough✊

People here to seem to misunderstand that casting Margot Robbie as Barbie was not intended to be the perfect decision. Barbie is no longer a white blonde girl which we have always stereotypically associated her to be. She can be anything. White, Black, Arab, etc. That’s the point the film is trying to bring across. That, yes, Margot is the stereotype, but the other Barbie’s are Barbie’s as well.

Barbie created an entirely new American doll market in the 1960s. Bratz as a concept was in direct competition with Barbie in the 2000s, just as Jem was in the 1980s. Barbie DID pioneer the fashion doll, and you can't sue someone for being "more successful" than you. You have to sue them for, oh let's say intellectual property theft or something. Maybe if you still Mattel cast-offs to make your prototypes, that might be a problem. That said, if you've got happy memories of your dolls, who cares about corporate lawsuits?

These dominated the market between approximately 1860 and 1890.[8] They were made to represent grown up women and intended for children of affluent families to play with and dress in contemporary fashions As apposed to Pandora dolls that date as far back as the 15th century but where only used by adults and the fashion industry
I have never been so excited for a movie in all my life. I might grow an extra set of ovaries just to celebrate this absolute masterpiece.

Yes! It struck me as very cheeky at first. I immediately got the reference. But then, I understood the entirety of this movie, and its significance. Like Kubrick's epic, it is about transcendence, about evolution beyond the mere human. Like the Kubrick masterpiece, this film will endure, a work of singular genius.
Clever teaser trailer. I like that they are referencing 2001 to comment on how monumental Barbie has been in pop culture. My hope is that they're going the route of musical with this because those fun 60s technicolor visuals and the striking choreography is really speaking to me. Yeah, go all the way with it, guys. They’re in amazing condition bc they were the only ones I owned & I took such care of them during the countless hours of play.
The Barbie 50s are drop dead gorgeous I would also say bye baby dolls and hi Barbie

this is pretty correct in terms of the history of barbie, before the barbie doll, most dolls were either baby dolls or ones that looked like children, a few dolls were out that were adults but they did not last and still had baby like faces
Who could have ever imagined a Kubrick and Barbie mash up? 2001: A Space Odyssey, The greatest sci fi film ever made...❤️❤️❤️

You know, ever since The Lego Movie, i've gave films based on toys the benefit of the doubt that seems like cash grab pieces of garbage. But with Gerwig and Baumbach writing the script, it definitely has every opportunity to be great. If Lego could work as a movie, might as well Barbie. Since this is a WB movie, I can assume that they looked at Lego Movie and wanna repeat the success of the first one with this
The fact that a Barbie film with an ensemble cast written by Greta Gerwig & Noah Baumbach, and directed by Greta is coming out is crazy enough, but the fact that this and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer (also with a giant ensemble cast) come out the exact same day is even crazier. I for one can't wait for that double feature...
