"for a barbie movie, it felt a lot like a ken movie" so true bestie!
the commitment to braids and a blue and white pinstripe shirt while reading the wizard of oz is just ... chef's kiss. also, puberty blues was turned into a really successful tv show in Australia in the 2010s!

I was cackling when you said you hope there were books in the film and I immediately remembered all the horse and patriarchy books Ken gets.
It’s amazing how you can maintain these clips over time, and keep a cohesive storyline in the final production. Enjoyed your perspective on each of the reads, as well as the process.
Joining your membership was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I often binge watch your videos, and like to have them playing in the background when I'm doing chores as well. And all the extra content, which are so interesting just makes me so content and happy. Thank you 💚

I’m so excited to join the membership at the start of the new year!! ❤
So excited to learn about Patriarchy and Horses 🤠🐎
yes, rob! i totally agree that it felt more like a ken movie!!
I’m completely obsessed with Barbie but Rob made a really good point with the Ken comment! I didn’t even think of it
You always manage to absolutely shock me with surprise videos and TBRs. I thought I was savvy to your tricks but you're always one step ahead, Kayla!!!
Never thought I'd be so excited for horse content 🐎
I have so much respect for you for your unwavering solidarity with the strikes :) You put so much thought into your videos. I find the perfect balance of intellectual stimulation and comfort in them! ❤
Thank you Rob! That is EXACTLY what I said about the movie! Too much Ken, not enough Barbie.
The level of detail that you put into your research leading up to watching the movie… unparalleled! I always appreciate your attention to detail in these creative TBR challenges.
don’t feel bad about not liking self help. i have a psych masters degree and want to appreciate self help more but they almost always produce an adverse reaction from me. 😂 i will almost never read them. i think i often find them condescending and/or unrealistic. especially depending on who wrote it and what their credentials are.
Watching everybody go to the barbie movie and talk about how they grew up with barbies or without barbies always makes me cry. Like the solidarity surrounding this movie is so
My favorite thing about Barbie was how my husband could relate to Ken just as much as I could to Barbie at times. And the fact that it made me heal the teenage part of me that was embarrassed and stopped playing with Barbies. And the fact that he and I can continually have conversations about the themes months after watching it.
I read Reviving Ophelia as a teenager and I found it inspiring. I’m glad to find someone else who loved it!
I love how you had content ahead of the movie based on vibes and info you found. ❤
yes my pink floyd/wizard of oz moment was one new year's eve with my family in the 90s goooood times
Someone else probably already mentioned but... in Wicked, when Elphaba and Glinda approach the emerald city they have green glasses on. Makes me want to read the book and see the show again.
I love that Jimmy Eat World album so much. This was such a weird selection of books but I had a great time watching your take on them ☺️
As a bookish 9 yr old, I was obsessed with all of the OZ books. Thankfully, our local library had all of them. When I ran out of all of the OZ books, I moved onto Kipling and fixated on Kim!
I saw Barbie at the Drive In too! Ours always does a double feature and Legally Blonde played after. It was such an amazing night. And it was nice to cry in the privacy of the car. 😂
I really needed the positive and calming vibes of your videos! After the day I had I just wanna say: to anyone who's ever been a victim of hate / violence because of their appearance, gender, orientation, race : DO NOT ever let a hateful notion 'there's something wrong with me' sink in. Trust me, it's a recipe for self hatred and compulsive anxieties later on. When we suffer and we need a break, it's only natural to think: maybe if I was like everyone else I would be accepted. No, haters will always find something else to prey upon. I've always had androgynous look, which was a real fuel for bullies when I was growing up. I embraced it, used it to my advantage in my acting / modeling career, I was almost the face of Leon in these new Resident Evil games :) All the best.
The green goggles make an appearance in the musical Wicked when they go to the Emerald City!
the drive in & the pink candies is such a great idea! also love hearing how different the wizard of oz movie is from the book. this was so fun! also here's hoping SAG-AFTRA gets a better deal 🤞

i would totally recommend the wizard of oz for a cozy day in if you ever want. i read it as a child and then as a teen and both times it enchanted me
I read Reviving Ophelia with my dad as like a 12 year old, and it genuinely changed my life. So glad you got the opportunity to pick it up!

Okay but baby you is ADORABLE
the pantone editions are so cute !!!
I liked the Barbie movie. I saw it three times but I was in the headspace where I needed a light-hearted movie. I thought it was going to be fun and light-hearted and it broke me that it wasn't but that's okay
I used to watch wizard of oz on repeat as a kid and I read the book for the first time in high school! 🥰
You made me curious about the 2 nonfiction books you read and I actually found an audiobook for Man and Horse on that audiobook website that starts with A. It may be available in other places too.

Oh no way! I guess I wasn't looking hard enough lol 🥲
I love that you're reading The Wizard of Oz! I was given a bunch of vintage editions from my aunt from when she was a kid and started reading them this year as well, and they were surprisingly dark but still whimsical. Mine have pretty funny illustrations in them as well, which is entertaining.
10/10 would recommend The Orchard by Adele Crockett Robertson for a memoir. It’s about a woman in the 1930s trying to keep her Apple orchard business in business and it was very interesting, inspiring, her determination and confidence was amazing. Seems like it gives off similar vibes to Man and Horse lol
I really loved this!! Great connection to Yellowface. ❤ and now I want to read Man and Horse. 🎉
OMGGGGG im so pumped kayla ily
Funny enough, the only Barbie doll I had as a kid was the Wizard of Oz Dorothy Barbie because I’m from Kansas
Love the pink!
Barbie is my favorite movie!! I’ve watched it so many times, because I wanted to rewatch it with my mom, sister, friends, and husband! Lol
Ahhhh I had that lego house growing up (i think it might even still be in the attic) and I adored it. I still dream about visiting it sometimes. I love that in these sorts of vlogs you aren't afraid to pick up some more random, nonmainstream books, it's always interesting to get your thoughts on some books I've never heard of before, especially when they're good!
I had that same Barbie & Friends clothing collection when I was little! 🩷
your barbie impression is like SPOT ON i’m sad you saved it for the last second of the video
@Sara Carroli did a reading vlog where songs pick her books and I'd love to see this from you too! 😢 unless you've already done something similar I'm not aware of. 😅
most anticipated video of the year 😌
I'm glad you enjoyed the wizard of oz! I read that book for the first time a few years ago and was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it
I got Barbie. Im glad u included that recommendation video too cuz im going to try those books for the Barbie character.
I can't believe this, but you made me want to read the Man & Horse book! I'm definitely adding it to my wishlist.
I loved this!! 💞
This was so fun!! 💗
Soooo good! Loved this, Kayla 💛
I really enjoyed this vlog!! ♥️♥️
That was fun, glad you liked the books 😊
You can add "The secret lives of Church Ladies" -- a super quick book for the novella type. The book really is good
Omg I had the same lego dream house, I LOVED that thing.
That was such a fun vlog!! 💕
Man & Horse sounds similar to Winterdance by Gary Paulsen. It's a personal memoir about a guy taking up dog sledding.
“for a Barbie movie it felt a lot like a Ken movie” those were EXACTLY my feelings😔 it was good but i was pretty disappointed by that.
💕💕💕
Your hair looks SO good toward the end of the video
I havent read puberty blues, but it did get turned into a tv show about 10 years ago that I watched, and can confirm it is accurate for the Australian teenage experience for a lot of us

I feel like I might have missed an announcement. Your into said “welcome to my booktube channel.” Do you have a second channel??
This idea is so cool
I can’t believe that man & horse is a real book!!!! Also I just went copper literally an hour ago and now I am wishing I went a deep red after that clip
hiii Barbieeee!!
no proust? 🥺🥺
day made oh my god!!!!
I read Reviving Ophelia in the 1990s as a teen and can confirm it was helpful for me!
Loved this video & appreciate all the work you put into it! I might have to check out the horse book, it sounds interesting. I read Reviving Ophelia in the 90's when I was a teen and it was a book that has stayed with me - in that same vein I wonder if you have read "Queen bees and wannabees" which actually inspired the movie mean girls, the book is not without issue - I read it when it came out in the early 2000's, and by that point I was out of school but I remember recognizing a lot of stuff from it from my own adolescence.
I never relate to the therapist talk around girls. I felt more scared, boxed in, and self conscious as a kid and in my teens. It wasn't until I got to college and then went in the workforce that I felt more of that confidence and feeling like the world is my oyster. Outside of that I loved the concept of this video.
Omg summer Kayla throwback!
So iconic that you enjoyed man and horse 😂😂
Those candies 🤤🥰
I got President Barbie
great video idea!!
I really love your unique videos. It’s so damn cute.
I’ve been so busy with work since July/ August I’ve got like 3 months of video to catch up on!! Starting now! 🩷🩷🩷

I’d love to hear what you think of Mamma Mia!
I did not expect Man & Horse to be a success 😅 It actually sounds really interesting.
Did you know that The Wizard of Oz is actually the 1st book in the Oz series? There are actually 15 books in the series.
💗💗💗
🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼
Me absolutely gasping in shock at the fact you've never seen Mamma Mia 😱
Bye Barbie 👋🏻
It's not really that things were better or safer in the 70s, even for his demographic, it's just that there wasn't 24/7 cable news networks yet, so you didn't hear about most of it.
omg this was unexpected
I heard years ago that F. B. said that the Wizard... was his least favorite, that he didn't like it.
Weird Barbie is the best Barbie 🩷
i was going to say something about oppenheimer but i don’t know to fun it would be to read a biography of the man who created the atomic bomb
💕My favourite film.... My favourite youtuber... The worlds collide how do i cope?!?!?
