My grandmother saw Barbie at the time and said, "Oh yes!" and bought me a ponytail doll and Solo in the Spotlight! I think I was four or five years old! My life has never be the same! ❤

What a cherished memory! It's incredible how certain toys, like the iconic Barbie, can leave such an indelible mark on our lives. The "Ponytail" Barbie and "Solo in the Spotlight" are both classic and sought-after Barbie items. Your grandmother certainly had an eye for timeless toys! It's beautiful how a simple gift can spark a lifelong passion and love. Thank you for sharing that heartwarming moment with me! ❤️

I used to love playing with Barbies back in 1963 when I was 4 years old. My mom didn’t save all my Barbie’s which is pretty devastating. I just stopped playing with them when I was 14. Many years later, I try to introduced my daughter into Bratz dolls when I first saw them in 2001 (because it reminded of my childhood and these awesome details of their clothings) - I saved all these Bratz dolls from her childhood. I have huge collection of Bratz, but I have been buying vintage Barbie’s to reminisce my memories of my childhood..so far I have pretty good collection of them that I am now satisfied with them. It’s so nostalgic !! I loved the Barbie the Movies…and I would love to see it again! I bought whole “Barbie The Movie” collection of 1st wave and I am looking forward to get 2nd wave that will be soon to be released. My granddaughter finally got toilet trained that my daughter took her to the store for reward treat….guess what she did picked? Her very first Barbie with playset starting at 3 1/2 years old ! I told my daughter that she must never to threw her first doll away if she outgrown them! I am so excited to witness our love for these dolls still continue in all these years!!

Oh, what a heartwarming doll journey you've had-from Barbies in the '60s to Bratz and now back to vintage Barbies! Isn't it wonderful how these dolls become family heirlooms in their own way? Your granddaughter picking her first Barbie is like the cherry on top of a multi-generational love for dolls! 🎉🎀 I'm thrilled to hear you're passing on your passion and wisdom to the next generation. Keep cherishing those precious memories and creating new ones! 🌟💖

Thank you so much for your Barbie content. I saw the movie with my daughter. I am 70 years old and have always loved Barbie. I still make Barbie clothes and when I saw that scene with Ruth Handler and the sewing machine at the kitchen table I just cried. Love Barbie so much. She was so important to me. She was my refuge and sanity growing up because I had two younger brothers that made me crazy. I love all your beautiful Barbies. I still have my original #4 Barbie, Ken and Midge. And lots more newer ones. Thanks Rachel! Have fun at the convention!!

They couldn’t casted the movie any better Margo and Ryan are Barbie and Ken. I highly enjoyed it. It was so nostalgic I was transformed back to being a little girl playing with my Barbie’s for hours. i really enjoyed your enthusiastic discussion of the BARBIE MOVIE , alot of people don't know that opening scene with little girls smashing baby dolls when giant barbie appears is a parody of opening scene of 2001:A Space Odyssey 1968 by Stanley Kubrick, which i thought was brilliant. fun video

My husband and I saw it the other day at 10:15 am the first showing and we had an amazing day afterwards and I’m still on cloud 9 we saw it Thursday and did bring 4 dolls one original Ken in his swimsuit and three movie dolls,(return to barbieland outfit (blue matching plaid) the gold jumpsuit and I went and bought perfect day Barbie for my husband, i ugly cried 6 times this movie is a cinematic masterpiece and we will be seeing it again. The speech was by far the most important speech I have ever heard not only did I need to hear it but more importantly when I needed to hear it, if you don’t ugly cry in this movie then you need to revisit your life, the jokes were good and I will admit I don’t like will Ferrell but his performance was good not all of his jokes made me laugh, but when they did they made me like him

It sounds like the movie had a profound impact on you and your husband! Bringing your dolls to the viewing must have made the experience even more special. Movies that evoke such strong emotions and resonate deeply with viewers are indeed masterpieces. The timing of that speech and its significance to you is a testament to the power of cinema. Everyone connects with films differently, and it's wonderful that this one touched you so deeply. Thank you for sharing your heartfelt experience! 🎬💖🌟

Thank you Rachel and Christopher for your review! I watched the movie with my sister a couple of weeks ago. We loved the movie. My favorite character was Allen because he was an individual and not like all the Barbies and the Kens. We had watched a lot of trailers and we expected Barbie to go to the real world and be disappointed, but what really surprised us was what Ken did when he returned from the real world. Everything you commented about and noticed is what we also noticed.

I thought of you when they smashed those baby dolls. I absolutely loved this movie. I moved and all my dolls are in a tote in my closet. I’m inspired to get them out. I had growing up skipper and I LOVED her. There were whole storylines we would do where she was a kid and then she goes to high school and college so you made the boobs come out. I loved her the same way I loved the doll with the ponytail that you can make long or short

I expected it to be silly and a great laugh, I did not expect to tear up a few times and be SO feminist which we always need more of. It's one of my fave movies ever now. Barbie was part of my entire life, my dad worked in the toy business. He's not going to see it in the theatre but I can't wait for his reaction when he sees it at home, I know he'll like it. He told me about the Skipper grows up doll and he'll get a huge kick out of her being in the movie. I have video camera Barbie lol. I have blonde, I didn't know she came in brunette, I usually prefer brunette & raven hair dolls :). I was in my 20s when she came out & super into tech, worked in web programming, I think she's cool as hell. My 35th anniversary repro swimsuit ponytail Barbie I picked up recently is brunette. I don't collect vintage but I wanted the OG girl. I only want 1 movie doll I think, unfortch she was popular but I think they will be restocked. I can't believe Mattel was not prepared with enough dolls so we could buy after seeing the movie. Those types, like me, who get inspired from the movie to get the doll often lose interest in a month if you can't get the doll/action figure.

I so wish I could go see the Barbie movie. I seriously could chat with Christopher all day about Barbies. I still have some of my childhood Barbies and I have collected my entire life, I'm 60. I used to collect at thrift stores and garage sales. I was lucky to meet Margaret Matsui (sadly she passed away) a wonderful doll collector and retailer of Barbie and other dolls. I had so many fun times hanging out in her doll room and touching and seeing awesome Barbies. Her collection was used to photograph pogs (if anyone remembers those). I was lucky to help redo her display cases and put her dolls back home. My Barbie collection is giving me some joy and focus since I can't get out. I can no longer get out to search for Barbies as I have become bedridden so I have added to my collection only through online sales. The thrill of collecting was mostly the hunt for me. How do people purchase from you guys? My dream doll bucket list is bendable leg midge, no bangs Francie and a walking Jamie. I have kind of realized I may never own those but I still dream of them. I was happy to hear that they took the Barbie movie seriously because I know how important Barbie is is so many peoples lives. I really enjoyed this video for the chat and seeing your collection.Thank you.

My babysitter daughter, Gretchen, a preteen, had all the original Barbies plus all the clothes, her aunt worked at a high end department store not sure if it was Macy, Bullocks or some other one, early 1960s in Los Angeles area and had access. My mom did not shop there except for my ballet outfit and shoes, so must have been expensive. I was allowed to play with Gretchen's PattyPlaypal (whose clothes I could share well into kindergarden) and her Barbies though I was only 3 or 4 until about 10 when my parents decided I didn't need to stay at the babysitter over the weekend anymore. I begged to have my own Barbie. My grandpa and my mom got into a huge argument over this, even Midge wouldn't do. As a consolation my dad bought me Ideal Tammy and Pepper. I loved playing with them but I always looked forward to going to my babysitter to visit the Barbies. But I did get the first Skipper from my grandpa for Christmas. And then Tutti. And the first bend leg Skipper. Imagine my surprise when years later my mom buys my young daughters Barbies, she worked at the military secondhand store in Berlin so could get unplayed with Barbies that were not available in Germany, as we lived there at the time. I really enjoyed seeing this. I haven't seen the movie yet, hope it comes out on DVD so I can watch it. Christopher has seen the movie at least 3 times I bet. How awesome that you have a BildLilli. Maybe she is why my mom didn't like Barbie, my mom was born in Germany, married my dad, but moved to the States to live with my dad with his family. Thank you Christopher for explaining g about the "American Girl" Barbie. I now will know what to look for. Rachel, ikr, the prices for Barbie some people are asking are ridiculous, you can spot the unknowledgable ones right off.

Wow, what a Barbie journey you've had! Isn't it funny how our parents' views on dolls can shift over the years? It sounds like you had a mix of all the classics: Tammy, Pepper, and of course, Skipper. How special that you even got to experience Bild Lilli, considering your mom's German roots! 🌟 I totally agree with you; the Barbie market can be a mixed bag when it comes to pricing. It's all about knowing what to look for! Thanks so much for sharing your story and for enjoying Christopher's insights as well. Keep your eyes peeled for that movie on DVD! 🎬💕

I am a huge Barbie collector (for FIFTY years). I was so excited to see it but was so disappointed by this movie! First, the smashing beautiful baby dolls scene in the beginning was jarring and upsetting to the kids I brought. Next, trying to pretend, only baby dolls existed and that there were no other adult dress dolls pre-Barbie!! Lingerie wearing Cissy, Ms.Revlon, French fashion dolls and the many others were all portrayals of adults. They had too many inappropriate jokes about human anatomy. Aren't we trying to get away from peoples privates identifying them? Unfortunately, the highlights were NOT about Barbie, but more about Ken, who was hilarious, amazing and entertaining!(The dance scene was great!) The final message in the movie was, Barbie, no longer wanted to even be a Barbie doll and instead opted to become a human so she could....go to the gynecologist?!!! That is highlight of being a woman?! They really missed the mark. Also...poor Alan. I love all my Alan dolls.

I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the movie. Given the vast history of Barbie, it's challenging to encompass everything. While Mattel's promotional angle was evident, the film's intention was also to infuse humor, as seen with the opening scene. (I do agree the smashing dolls was a little rough!) Personally, I appreciated its message in the last scene, especially the emphasis on empowering girls to embrace and care for their bodies.

@@RachelHoffmanDolls I actually LOVED the Ken scenes. lol!!! I thought the happy ending would be Barbie going back to Barbie Land and everyone, including Alan, poor outcast, pregnant Midge, Ken and Weird Barbie all lived happily ever after. I understand what you are saying though. Love your channel!!

Wasn't Alan supposed to be Midge's boyfriend?

Yes, in the Barbie doll world, Alan was introduced as Midge's boyfriend. Midge, Barbie's best friend, first appeared in 1963, and Alan was introduced shortly after in 1964 as her boyfriend. Midge and Alan have been closely associated throughout the history of Barbie doll releases, and they have even been portrayed as a married couple in later editions with children. Buuutttt we still felt like he was portrayed as a gay character in the movie, wanting a different life.

@@susanmacdonald4288 I am surprised that Alan is the gay man in the movie, and not Ken. The real "Ken" was Ruth Handler's son. Although he had married and had children, he came out as gay to his parents. He contracted AIDS from a younger Ecuadorian lover, and, sadly, he died from it. His mother, to her credit, stood by him to the end. His homosexuality and cause of death was not revealed to the public. It was reported that a "brain tumor" caused his death.
