One thing that I absolutely ADORE of Past Mattel is their effort in doll photography in the 90s and 2000s they made such great photoshoots that had great realistic scenes that took advantage of what they had and even with the limitations of their doll’s articulations but still as a child made you image that Barbie was really living in a real world and this breakup made things much more rich. Sadly almost everything is shelved (if we are lucky) but lost to most of us like Diego and all the photoshoots they have done throughout decades of promotion

Yes! I loved the intricate sets and custom dolls they would make - the Swan Lake chapter book was so ethereal! I'm glad that we have some Instagram/Tumblr/Twitter accounts that are sharing these promo images and books for posterity

Same here! Loved the dioramas they would set up for the dolls. They used a lot of custom dolls, too! I remember seeing unreleased Ken dolls, Stacey and Skipper dolls of all different hair and skin tones, and a lot of different Todd dolls (who gets almost no love and recognition). Even Barbie would have all these cool hair and makeup combos that were never released.

Mattel has always been great at marketing, but Barbie and Ken's breakup and reconciliation definitely was their peak. I vividly remember it and I don't even live in the US and was about 9 at that time...also greatly remember the Ken makeover game on the Barbie site, it was awesome x

Something I'm not particularly happy about the current Ken Fashionista Dolls is that, they DO NOT have a curvy bodytype unlike the Barbies. They all seem the same bodytype no matter what you tell me, the "dad bod" ones have the torso of a flat rectangle... They did not try at all 💀💀

I recently returned to collecting Barbies after a 20 year absence and my first buy was a "curvy" yoga Barbie. My first thought when I saw her was, "this is fat?? she just has a normal looking body!" When I finally saw the other shapes, I remembered as a child in the 70's thinking Barbie had a freaky body and preferred Dusty or even Francie. I think Mattel pays lipservice to representation and doesn't want to go to far in any direction - they want to play it safe. I haven't run across all the Ken bodies yet, but when I showed the first one I got to my 82 year old mother, she made a disgusted face and asked, "what happened to his muscles? Ken used to have such a nice manly body." Mom always had an eye for the boys lol. My other frustration with the curvy body is that they gave her a very unfortunate body, pear shaped with a very short waist, and since the clothing is no longer made for individual sizes, it brought back the real life trauma of trying to find flattering plus size clothes back in the 80s.

I hope Zac and Diego get a chance to be officially produced in the future. That'd be such a fun nod to fans invested in them back in what could have been in the early 2000's

This is the kind of cute and creative marketing I live for, it’s so extra but is it not fun 😭

A curiosity is that Cali Guy Blaine’s face sculpt was created for Ken for the Collector line and it was used for him a few times before they gave it to Blaine on the playline. 6:33 Ken was also around in 2005, like the 2005 Handsome Groom Ken. I love how extra they got for the Together Again campaign and lots of the Ken releases from that time and I like the diversity that the Ken dolls have now but I don't like how Barbie and Ken are being portrayed nowadays that much because sometimes they don't even feel like a couple, especially on TikTok and Instagram

Mattel needs 2 bring that Diego character. Also the dolls from the late 90s to early 2000s up til 2008 were gorgeous. Real hair ken dolls. Realistic looking faces bodies n clothes. ❤

This was another great watch! Really love these outlandish marketing strategies that could only have existed in the 2000s. Ken has never really reached his full potential for me. Wish they'd have given him a more defined jawline or even a bit of a stubble, as he has major babyface these days :,)

I just wish some of the Ken had facial hair! It’s weird to me at this point lol I always thought my Ken dolls would have been finer with a goatee or some 😂

I remember MyFroggyStuff had customized one of their Ken's into being Tony Stark and honestly, Mattel had a missed opportunity to do a Tony Stark, Ken and Pepper Potts Barbie based off the first movie's ballroom scene in Iron Man.

Definitely odd! The fact that they were able to keep it up for 7 years is crazy - many companies would be hesitant. As for Diego, even if he was a one-off release like FF Kurt, it would have been nice to have him in the line.

That was crazy p.r move . I was in high school When this happened. It was big deal at the time . Mattel knew how market barbie back then . Mattel should released California barbie girl doll line again.

Ken was/is an accessory to Barbie in his 60+ years of existence.

What a convoluted way to essentially just update a head sculpt. This PR move was cringe in various ways, especially the reality show, but more importantly replacing Ken with another guy that looks like a Ken. His face kept changing before that. Just make the new face Ken again. I guess the drama, polls, etc. were to make people more interested in Ken, but I wonder if it even worked, and why was Steven available? Wasn't he dating Christie? When did THEY break up? These are the real questions lol

I remember this I was about 12 years old and I told my mom and she didn’t believe me. I got Blaine doll that year as well as Ken but his face didn’t look like Ken to me so I renamed him and made him a whole new person. I bought summer as well since Blaine can’t be with out his sister he be lonely. I liked the whole storyline behind them that Mattel had going. I didn’t know about the website plus dial up back then lol. I find the Diego prototype very interesting and would have indeed bought him too. I do love the new Ken fashionista dolls today and buy them but it’s sad to see how cheap they are made. Dolls from Barbie just aren’t like they used to be.

Because my parents refused to buy a Ken doll (this was the early 1970's), I (like too many other Gen-X girls) was forced to make do with my younger brother's G.I. Joe doll (don't also be black or other nonwhite during this period). Clearly, must of this nitpicking is coming far more from these boomer grandparents who still haven't connected with the fact that those "alternative" American Girl dolls they love so much are also property of Mattel.
