Barbados removes Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State: Why it matters.

On 30th November 2021, the independent Caribbean nation of Barbados became a Republic with Dame Sandra Mason being sworn in as their first President replacing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as its Head of State. I discuss the significance of this event through a historical lens and include a bonus section on getting started with Barbados Genealogy research.

‪In 1661, the Barbados Slave Code was an Act of the Barbados Assembly that reclassified black people as chattels (i.e. property) leading to centuries of racialised oppression. This spread to Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Jamaica and the rest of the British empire. Barbados’ decision to become a Republic in 2021 is a Full Circle moment.‬

This is such an excellent and insightful video Dexter. Also of note, slavery in Barbados was so cruel that they life expectancy of slaves was age 18… it’s truly amazing that anyone survived and that we are here today.

Thank you so much for the comment Ruth! I agree that we must change the narrative to one of survival against the odds. Confronting the past is key to moving forward with greater confidence.

Very informative. The history of Barbados is one I'm not familiar with -- though my maternal grandparents were born there, and you have given a flawless history lesson. I've been researching the Lewis family and have been lucky , with the help of a distant cousin, to uncover some family history. Thanks, and I am looking forward to more of your presentations.

Well done Barbados, you are respected now an example to the others, lead the way forward leave the other islands behind, God help those who help themselves, they cannot serve 2 masters. They need to come out from under their oppressors and keep their self respect and dignity

For such a time as this! Awesome. My grandfather always said that his people came from Barbados. Grandpa's father was a white man named John Clarke. I'm totally interested in finding out more. Good job.

Wont you still consider Barbados is still under the monarchy? While still being a member of the Commonwealth. Actions speaks louder than words.

At 10:30, as a genealogy researcher I would have thought you’d have known better than to say something like this. James II (the Duke of York), who founded the Royal African Company and his brother Charles II, who gave it a royal charter, are not ancestors of the current royal family. Charles II had no legitimate children, and James II was deposed in 1688, with his remaining British line going extinct in 1714, and his Jacobite line being dispossessed of the throne and currently living in Germany.

Glad you found it interesting Katy! The history of the West Indies is so closely intwined with European history that to see them as separate misses a huge learning opportunity. Miss Fenty let's do that family tree!!! :-)

It wasn't a surprise for Barbadians - Barbadians have wanting to get rid of their colonial past for decades. And there is no such thing as black Africans - Africans (Sub-Saharan) ARE black.

It's all well and good getting rid of their "colonial past"now,as the British Empire ceased to exist over 50 yrs ago. They ought to have broken away from the U.K. when it actually mattered, unlike the situation now.
