Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center and Parking Garage

The nine-story, 322,710-square-foot outpatient facility is situated on 5.3-acres and encompasses two city blocks, with 100,000 square feet of the building shelled for future growth. The garage, which includes a ground floor and three elevated levels, has 625 parking spaces.
The owner wanted to ensure the cancer center was located near its main hospital campus. The Southbank site was challenging to design around given its proximity to I-95. With thoughtful planning, the new cancer center is oriented with the parking garage serving as a buffer to the internal courtyard and outdoor patio areas to keep them quiet and provided a respite to its patients and families.
.An important strategy in creating a holistic healing environment was integrating soothing views of the surrounding landscape throughout the facility, including views of the riverfront and the downtown skyline. One of the focal points of the design was the architectural precast concrete “Hope Wall”. This area welcomes visitors from one of the busiest areas of its city. The approach to the cancer center sets the tone as one of serenity and calm, as the design team intended. This corner is a pleasant gathering place of refuge during a visit to the cancer center.
