Baofeng UV-5R decoding ham radio APRS packets using I-Pad

Ғылым және технология

In this video, I explain APRS for ham radio and it's practical uses. I show how to use a Baofeng UV-5r and an I-Pad to decode and display APRS packets on a map.

We need more people like you to help explain what Amateur Radio Users can and cannot do. Classes are generally useless at explaining general practices for users, and only good for passing tests. Keep up the good work- KC1KLE

dude this is dope. I think Im getting it now So basically lets say your out camping and there is crap cell service and no internet. You can use this to relay information over the airwaves using it as the dataline basically? As long as you can hit a repeater from where you are and have it all properly set up you can use this for forwarding message data, your given location and more? This stuff is so fun and interesting to learn about.

Thank you for this great video on APRS. Just getting impatient to try this out. Still waiting for my Amateur Radio results for which I had appeared on 16th Dec'19. By the way, in one of your previous videos, the Baofeng uv5r including all its genres were criticised for harmonic emissions as per the FCC standards. With reference to your this video, does it now means that all the new UV5R and other Baofeng ht models have been re-engineered to comply with the FCC laws? Thank you & 73

I tested the latest Baofeng here kzread.info/dash/bejne/jKSG1at-m9Knirw.html and it failed on VHF. If you notice in this video I do not transmit, I setup the video to be a receive only demonstration. If I want to transmit I use my Kenwood with built in APRS. Hope you get your results soon.

@@HamRadioInAction Yes, have noticed that the Baofeng UV5R ht in the video was only used for the APRS receiving and not for tx. However, mounting the Diamond whip antennae on the UV5R made it really look gorgeous. Here, in Delhi, India I had spoken to few senior Hams about the harmonics created by the Baofeng-line of HTs, but they said that a filter is available that can block such emissions. However, would love to do the experiments and report the outcome in this awesome Ham forum only after my tech results are declared. Until then have to only watch videos and listen to experienced radio operators:) 73

Hello Brian, I am new to the HAM radio world (still studying to get my license). I wanted to get some clarification on APRS. I plan on going on disperse camping where time to time i will have no signal on my phone. In the case of an emergency i am aware i can contact others with a HAM radio and being able to provide my coordinates will come in handy. Will APRS provide me with coordinates?

Anyone using APRS Pro (used in the video) figure out how to clear the map? Default has the packets coming in from the internet. Within 30 seconds I had so many markers cluttering up the map I couldn’t stand it. After I turned the internet packets off, the junk was still there. I wanted a fresh map to work with. Then start gathering packets from the airwaves.
