It seems to be always changing. It uses technolgy dating back to the advent of radio all the way to today and a little beyond modern. I would become an amateur radio operator but can not afford the HF equipment. There's is where my interest lays. The VHF and UHF equipment is very affordable and it is very easy to get surplus equipment from other services and easy to convert them to amateur radio. I do this often for people that pay me. But HF equipment is super expensive, has large antennas, and there is almost no surplus equipment on that band that can be converted to the amateur radio bands. Whenever I convert surplus radio equipment, it is almost always VHF and UHF. I have only converted two surplus radios from a different HF service to amateur radio and they were both really old. You almost have to buy new equipment for HF. The used HF equipment is almost as expensive as the new. Thus, there is little reason to buy used.

@clintb78 Real numbers run on the x-axis. They start on zed and go to infinity in both the negative and positive direction of x. (horizontal) Imaginary numbers run on the y axis. They start on zero and move on the y-axis in both the Imaginary negative and Imaginary positive direction. (vertical). In both instances zed, or zero, is the starting point.

I set them up a lot for local businesses, amateur radio operators, and some emergency services in the rural community I reside. I do not have an amateur radio license either. But I enjoy setting up the radios, even more powerful base stations for the main buildings. I like climbing antenna towers, making antennas, making high current power supplies, antenna tuners, and the such. I am rather a radio head. I just do not have an amateur radio license because my interests lay in HF. There is little HF surplus equipment that can be converted to HF amateur radio bands. I can find VHF and UHF surplus equipment that is easily convertible to amateur radio bands all day. But hf is different. Hf equipment is very expensive both used and new. The antennas are huge also. Since hf is not within my budget, I do not bother getting an amateur radio license. I just keep making conversions for others, climbing towers, qmkning antennas and listening in on my communication scanner with a rooftop antenna on my home. You do not have to be an amateur radio operator to enjoy radio, but it helps. It is just VHF and UHF is not my interest.

@@GruntProof It is not enforced anyway. I hear all manner of radio traffic on the 22 channels. The FRS walkie talkies are maximum of 2 watts and the GMRS are maximum 5 watt walkie talkies. But I hear people using 5 watt that surely have no license at all. The only way to tell is that you hear them brag about it being 5 watts. I guess as long as they stay off the repeaters, it is not enforced. It is rather like speed limit 55 in a rural road with no traffic. 55 can be stretched out to 70 with little consequence in rural roads.

Please, understand: Reporting people without a license is like reporting people without a driver's license. Is it better to wait until someone has a accident or start jamming the fire service before acting ? Of course, using a Baofeng cheap radio on FRS, GMRS or MURS its like driving a modified car: doesn't mean you in for a crash against another car, but you can allways have trouble with law enforcement. If a non licenced person as a radio with TX capability, and tells you he is not going to transmit, ever, is like a guy having a unlicenced gun and telling you that he will never, ever, shoot someone. What I mean is that, at least the guy who is licenced knows the rules, and with a litle bit of incentive by ecthics, and fines, the chances of wrongdoing are smaller.

This right here. If you look up your local emergency frequencies you're just going to get the RX frequency for them that you would plug into a scanner for example. No tones or offset so keying up on that frequency accidentally isn't going to do a darn thing. If you're still nervous about it then just turn duplex off for those channels on your UV-5R which will essentially disable transmitting.

Congratulations. Start with a great antenna. The transceiver can be as basic as possible. But the antenna is king. I set up many stations for others. They sometimes use old converted surplus equipment from the 1980s. But with a good antena, it will transmit very far. I am not an amateur radio operator. I am not licensed. But I am often paid to convert surplus VHF and UHF equipment to amateur radio bands. I am also paid to make high current power supplies, amplifiers, antennas, and manual antenna tuners. The single best component on the station is the antenna.

One nasty thing i learned from my UV5R is if you like to listen to it with a headset on, plugging in the headset while the radio is on will make it transmit, which will disrupt conversations on frequency you are listening to. You have to turn the radio off before plugging anything in the kenwood style connector.

The manual I've got recommends power-off ANY time you connect/disconnect anything to the radio. Regardless... You can use CHIRP or manually program the radio so that it won't do that. There are some youtube vids on programming to prevent transmitting (same as setting it up as "receive only"). The manual should also provide the info but it's not as easy to interpret. Using an earphone-only device instead of a combination speaker/microphone headset might also make a difference. Make sure it's jack will electrically match up with the larger socket however. It just won't need any electrical connections except those for the ""speaker".

There's another "Transmit" surprise with the radio series. If you enable the ALARM (pressing and holding the "Call" button for a couple seconds), you can accidentally cause the radio to transmit. To avoid this, make sure the MENU is properly setup. Set, "32 AL-MOD" is set to "SITE". If it's set to "TONE" or "CODE" then the radio will also transmit while it's siren is putting out the alarm. That's not only power-wasting but a real problem if the person isn't licensed. With the "32 AL-MOD" item set to "SITE" it will just flash the LED and sound the audible siren when you trigger the ALARM function.

My problem is when I put in the frequency it gets traffic like people are taking but all it does is make noise and it shows it is getting a strong signal. My question is is the bf-f8hp a analog radio and they are using digital or are they using a trunked system. I don't think it's trunked as I thought that is in the 800.000 range but I would like to know.

I also set the Baofeng BF-F8HP with the volunteer fire brigade frequencies. The little radio is tough as nails. The antenna is a bit feeble and I ordered new ones that are more rugged and for just one frequency range so they will not be so long. They love them. Meanwhile, their purpose made Motorola walkie talkies costing nearly eight times more, have a much shorter battery life, much heavier and bigger, and have less power. They do have a better stock antenna though. But they do not fit the Baofengs. Rural fire needs the FM for the added range and penetration. It is likely the rural communities will never go to digital for the benefits it offers. There is a place for digital and a place for analogue. They are not interchangeable in all aspects.

We purchased 12 of the UV-82c versions of the Baofeng radios. This particular model radio is part 90 certified. Our fire and EMS still uses VHF analog. An extremely hilly terrain VHF works much better than digital. Also the cost benefit of these radios over a digital or p25 radio is massive. You're looking at a cost of $1,000 or more per HT vs about $70 for a UV-82c radio and an upgraded antenna.

I don't know how to do anything else--yet. This thing is fun! Tough, too! It flew off my bike handlebars at about 16mph playing AC/DC, hit the street and skidded for about ten yards. The battery became detached and bounced and rolled. Picked it all up, reattached the battery, turned it on--good as new! The rubber ducky antenna sucks. Got a new one. FM works great. I use this feature most. I listen to radio on the bike, in the car, at work--wherever. I'm a cyclist, and go out alone most of the time. Can’t you hear “packet racket “on 145.85? Also, are they not using 145.800 for some voice transmission on the ISS? I am pretty sure that I was able to hear a little bit of that using my walkie-talkie from inside my house

Would really like to see a video on how to program repeaters in GMRS hand held by hand without Chirp. I’m a senior citizen and do not own a computer

Years ago I bought my Baofeng for a big airsoft game with my school's club. Had no idea that we were breaking the law by using the FRS frequencies...oops. Thankfully it was a very remote area surrounded by woodland and hills. Our squad lead wasn't able to pick up our transmissions when he ran to the gas station ~10 miles away. Ended up disabling PTT in the chirp software and used it to listen in on emergency services frequencies back in the city. One night I was listening and heard a police officer mention a street name that sounded familiar. Turns out he was going to bust a party that my suitemate was at lmao
