Banovici Coal Mine - Bosnian Narrow gauge Steam in Spring Sunshine
No need to chase this engine. It only moves at walking pace, so my driver Jaz slept all day whilst I trudged in the mud. And he still wanted to be paid.
Ex JZ 25-30 0-6-0 (CDK #2530, 1949) pushing and pulling rakes of tipper wagons thru the loading point of the washery and past some heavy duty welding on the Banovici Coal Mine 760 mm narrow gauge network. April 2014, just before the deluge that cut Banovici off from the main line at Živinice.
A permit to visit the mine costs €15 or BM30 on presentation of your passport, which is available from the office at the main depot a few kilometres up from the washery. Buy a season ticket and lots of pivo for the friendly train crews.

It's nice to see steam still being put to use!
Fascinating little video. Poor old steamer wheezing away!
True meaning of "heavy duty"...
Strasan film... Strasan film...

As your comment was so interesting, I've translated it:- "Awesome movie ... Here you can see politicians robbing the country ... All that is used is from Yugoslavia, even labor (poorly paid), and exporting ores at cheap prices from the country. Once Yugoslavia was a full factory and any need to dig for your own needs ... A great movie ..."

Powerful little buggers those shunting engines. The draught horse of the rail yard. Breaking down and making up rail wagons all day everyday

Absolute gold!
I was there in 95-96 with IFOR. Picture of me somewhere with me in the cab with all my gear. Seems like there was a 14 or so year old kid who was the fireman and had to keep the steam up. He looked like he hated the job I would love to have done at that age.

+Kelley Wright Thanks. I believe in 95/96 they were running steam passenger trains on the main line between Sarajevo and Zenica due to war damage to the overhead power wires. Did you see any? More recently, train crews have been bringing their kids for footplate rides at weekends. In 2009, I saw a 12 year old drive one of the big 2-10-0 Kriegsloks at Sikulje, Lukavac!

We did patrols all over the place there, and I was also in Lukavac. I seen quite a few old German steam engines on the Main line as well as a few of the "Kenedi" locomotives,

Well, possibly that 14 year old wasn't there because locomotives are fun and boys like them but rather because he was from poor family and sent to work at such early age while other 14 year olds were playing and going to school.

I was in the former Yugoslavia over 40 years ago. Even passenger trains ran on coal and stunk up the whole station when it pulled in. Hopefully things have improved by now.

There are those of us who feel the smell of coal smoke, adverse effects on the respiratory system notwithstanding, to be far superior to today's diesels! LOL I myself would love to have been in a passenger station back in the steam era!

+b3j8 couldnt agree more with you, sadly i am old enough (just) to remember mainline steam engines in everyday use... my friends and I went down to the main stations in Glasgow Scotland when we were young every weekend to look and smell the steam trains.....Happy Happy days indeed

DNA, Everywhere smells of diesel now. The end of steam was when I was 3-4 years old. First steam loco I recall seeing in operation was in Dallas, Texas USA about 1959.

what does pivo mean? also nice video really enjoyed this :)
@EvenFurtherRail
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Pivo is beer. The Serbs mainly drink Lav and the Bosnians drink Tuzlanski or Sarajevsko. Tuzlanski is the local beer for Banovici. But there is also plenty of home brew.
nice video what camera are you using ? canon DSLR ?

This was taken using a Nikon V1, which I castigated as the "worst camera I have ever used" when I was given one to trial when it first came out. I subsequently bought one for a fraction of the RRP off a market stall in Pattaya. After lying around in a cupboard for two years, I finally used in earnest this year.
The locomotive was a 0-4-2T.
