Banished Strategy & Tactics 33: Farm Field Sizes

Ойындар

An episode dedicated to ideal farm field sizes, and testing out the data ourselves. I call this episode "Short" in the intro, but it ends up being longer :D
Credit goes to the www.reddit.com/r/banished community for doing the raw math legwork for the numbers I present.
NOTE: I mistakenly state that the sizes listed are good for Orchard fields too. This is an error the 15X4 sizes we've been using previously are actually ideal.

All farm field sizes are wrong now with current patch level. Direct from reddit. 4x14 (56sq) w/ 1 worker: Done by the beginning of late summer; 392 average yield; Conclusion: Heavily overworked, farm size too small. This is the farm size I've seen recommended often here on Reddit (any farm size that's a multiple of 56 squares using the default number of workers), but as you'll see below, it has an output 2-3 times worse than other farm sizes where you manually select fewer workers than the default. 8x14 (112sq) w/ 1 worker: Done by the end of early autumn and the beginning of autumn on average; 784 average yield; Conclusion: Farm size is close to ideal, if space isn’t a concern farm size could probably be increased slightly which would increase yields during good weather without significantly reducing the yield during bad weather. 11x11 (121sq) w/ 1 worker: Done by the middle of autumn, usually right before the first frost of the season. Lost ~20% of two farms due to an early frost one of the years; 868 maximum yield, 845 average yield. Conclusion: Closer to ideal than 8x14. Farm size could be increased slightly to increase yields during perfect weather. 13x10 (130sq) w/ 1 worker: Done by the middle of autumn to the beginning of late autumn, lost ~20% of the total yield one year to a mid-autumn frost; 924 maximum yield, ~740 yield during the frost year, average yield of 887. Conclusion: Higher maximum and average yield than the 121sq farm but the risk of losing crops to early frost may outweigh the potential benefits. With a less than perfect setup (e.g., with long walking distance between homes and work) the risk of loss to early frost increases. 15x15 (225sq) w/ 2 workers: Done by the beginning of autumn; Average yield of 798 per worker; Conclusion: Close to ideal but still less output than the 1-man farms. See overall conclusion below. Overall Conclusion: The ideal farm size for corn production is somewhere around 121 squares per worker. The exact size doesn’t matter since farm output is always ~7 food per square, so choosing a farm size to fit your available space while still being within ~10 squares of 121 would be ideal (so between 110-130sq per worker) since it would allow you to maximize your usable land while not compromising total output by too much. The distance the worker has to walk between their home, their work, and the closest storage barn should also be considered. The less optimal their walking path is the smaller the farm should be. As a very rough rule, if the house and barn are touching the farm, size the farm to ~121sq and for every five squares the house and barn are away from the farm reduce the size of the farm by 1sq. So, as an example, if the house is 10sq away from the farm and the barn is 10sq away (so a total of 20 additional sq), reduce the farm size by ~4sq to 117sq. A 15x15 farm (225sq) being worked by two workers would have an output very similar to a 112sq farm being worked by one worker, but the total potential output would still be less than two 1-man farms of 113sq-130sq. A 15x15 farm is also very difficult to place compared to a farm with ~121 squares since you can choose from multiple different orientation (i.e., 8x14, 9x13, 8x15, 10x12, 11x11, 9x14, and 10x13) to fit your useable space. The only advantage a 2-man, 15x15 farm has over a smaller 1-man farm is it takes less time to change the crops and disable work if needed, which would make reassigning your farmers during the winter easier. TL;DR: To maximize the output of your corn farm, choose a size between 110-130 squares (i.e., 8x14, 9x13, 8x15, 10x12, 11x11, 9x14, and 10x13) and use only one worker. 121sq seems to be the 'safest' size with virtually no risk of losing crops to frost while still nearly maximizing output. Only use 130 if you're in late-game with a perfect setup (i.e., houses and barns touching farms) and have a lot of food security and can risk an early frost. 110-115 is ideal for early-game (to remove risk of frost loss) and should also be used if your farmers have a sub-optimal walking distance to their farm.

Man, I've put 50 hours into this game and have just reached 1250 population in one of my maps, but I never realized the optimization for farms was so... minimalist. I'm usually making 14x40 farms and putting 12 people on them. Definitely gotta do some reading.

9x9 could work if it's beans and the farmer is educated and has his/her house and storage nearby. If the farmer is a dumbdumb and crop is a retarded one like pumpkin; as small as 6x8 might be an efficient use of space. I won't start placing down fields untill i've gotten some steel tools first. You'll encounter issues when you start farming before you've made the jump from iron to steel.

I have tried to make those kind of crop field size. And honestly 15x15 is still the most efficient. All my crops have 6 farmers each and my food supply is sky rocketing.

6 farmers for 15x15 is definitely overkill but if you have the population to spare, then it's fine.

Sheep are the best resource for trading as you get mutton and wool which makes high value warm coats.....your brewery route is a hard way IMO

He went with the brewery route mostly for space efficiency rather than raw trading efficiency. In the earlier episodes he was constantly getting bombarded by storage is full warnings, even after spamming a lot of barns. Breweries basically shrink the space required for your products, shrinking fruits into ale. And remember that ale is still a good trade resource in its own right, though I agree worse than wool which has absurdly good trading value.

My crop fields are 16x16, which 1792 units of food each year using three farmers. Two farmers will do at least 1000 to 1500 units per year. 16x16 also means three houses can fit along side the field. Anything smaller and you're wasting your labor. Anything larger and you'll never harvest everything before winter even with four farmers.

I suppose it may depend on the crop but when I do 8x15 plots of beans, with houses across the 1-tile road from the farms, and storage buildings in a similar distance from the farm, then I get about 840 beans per plot. Using 3 fields and 3 farmers, that's 2520 units of beans. 1792 units of food / 256 tiles is 7 units of food per tile. 2520 units of beans / 360 tiles is also 7 units of food. Now this is just the case for beans. I don't have numbers on other crops, but as long as no crops are lost, then the farmer can get max yield from each farm. That means 8x15, which is smaller than 16x16, is not necessarily wasted labor, just divided labor which may happen if an area cannot support 16x16 farms.

@@pershop4950 I understand your thinking. How many people do you assign to an 8x15 plot? I assign 2 at first and increase it to 3 later. If you assign 2 people to 2 fields of 8x15 you are using more people then I do for one field. This is okay when later you have 50 laborers, but when I start with only 4 farmers, 4 laborers and two builders it's actually critical.

Ditch farming and agriculture, I would suggest concentrate on gathering/hunting, far better way to get food.

Hi, I can't seem to get my mic working when playing Banished and live streaming or recording to upload to KZread. I'm using Raser: Kraken USB and I also have Kraken 7.1. The 7.1 will not work at all with Banished, the Kraken USB play the sounds, but the mic will not work with Banished. Both work perfectly well with other games. Also the game sound keeps going out and I have to restart the game. I've tried to find answers on line, but seems I need to ask those who do stream and record for uploading.
