Banished Strategy and Tactics 3: Finishing the Crossroads build

Ойындар

In this video I put the finishing touches on our Crossroads build. Once the first trader arrives, how you build your city will likely change based on what goods he has available. I also go into detail on how I like to keep up with housing once my initial build is complete.
I will likely continue playing Ficklewood as a Let's play, speaking to general mid to late game strategies rather than advising a specific build. If this is the first video you've stumbled across, I highly advise you to watch the first two before this one.
Note: I goofed when I talked about the purchasing power of 625 firewood, I meant to say 4 sheep, not 2.

    Also, the reason Riley was done being educated first is because the walking distance between the student's home and the school affects how long they will need to stay in school before they are fully educated.

    In response to the Trader question. Merchants will turn up but you need Traders to move the good between your warehouse and the Trading post. Much in the same way vendors move everything to the Market. You really only need the 1 I find

    To answer the question about whether traders show up in your trading post, I can confirm that, in fact, a trader boat will come and park even if you have 0 stock and 0 traders employed. I haven't tried to see if a trader will show up if all your citizens are dead, though. However, one big advantage of having a trader act as a laborer is that they keep their wheelbarrow, increasing their carrying capacity (take with a grain of salt, I think that's accurate.)

    I've logged dozens of hours on Banished and I'm still learning quite a bit from your videos, great insight to some of the fine details without getting too dry or number-focused. As for your question about traders and boats, as far as I know the number of traders you have has no affect on the number of boats that show up. The number of trading posts you have built does affect the number of boats that will show up, this can be interesting to handle because each trading post will have different goods and you probably won't have enough firewood to have at each location. What I typically do when a boat shows up that has something I want is I will slam a bunch of people into trading and quickly fill the trading post to get what I need and then zero-out the goods at the post so they don't try to replenish their stock after the deal is done.

    Great series. I discovered this great game recently. I love these old games that just run smoothly on an ordinary laptop. What I prefer to do differently: - I build the flophouse right away. This gives all the sims a roof over their heads before the first winter. They will still have children, but not that many. That's ok to me: a big baby boom early is a big death bust later. I prefer the population to grow more gradually. When the basics are set up, I start to build stone houses gradually. Stone houses consume 2/3 the amount of firewood that wooden houses do. When the flophouse is empty, I destroy it. - Never ever build more than one barn before you have the marketplace. The sims will look for food _only_ in the barn nearest to their house. I learned the hard way, that sims can easily starve to death although there is food in another barn. Also, they hoard food in their houses and don't share it with new houses. Only finish a house when there is food in storage (barn or marketplace) or the new house will be empty and risks starvation. Build houses close to work, but always inside the radius of the marketplace. - I build the school asap. I want _all_ children to be educated. The starting children included. This will slow down the start a bit: the kids will stay in the school for 10 years before they become productive (weirdly, the age of the children goes faster than the seasons, people years are shorter than nature years). But I don't mind a slightly slower start. They will make up for the 10 years of school easily in the rest of their lives. - I prefer to start farming early. Farming can be incredibly productive and the production is reliable. Farms scale easily: just destroy the farm in winter and designate a larger one in its place. Larger farms are more productive. There is a guy on youtube that uses only 7x7 farms. That is wrong. Larger farms use the same amount of farmers per grid square, but produce more. Considerably more. Also, there is a guy on youtube that claims that crop rotation is a thing. It isn't, that was an idea of the developer, but it was never implemented. With two 15x7 farms, an early town will be swimming in food and can export all the venison it produces. Ordinary food is worth 1 thingy, venison is worth 3. I expect nobody will ever read this, but if someone does, use it to your advantage. There is still at least one person in the world starting out with this game.

    About foresters and rocks within their area: When a forester wants to plant a new tree on a location already occupied by a rock or a piece of iron, it will remove the obstacle, plant the tree, then dump the resources into the nearest stockpile. This is by no means a viable means of harvesting stone and iron, but it's not necessary to clear a forester's area of stone and iron just to increase the space where trees can be planted.

  • @Anergyne

    If you check the forester's production tab (select the building, fourth button on the right in the window it opens), you should see some stone or iron being gathered there, unless you removed all of it manually already.

    Lynneiah Huh, thank you for the information. I knew that foresters could harvest stone and iron, but I was under the impression that it would slow down the tree planting. But if it is all one motion then it wouldn't really matter. I'd probably still proactively harvest all the stone in the forest because I'd need it up front, but wouldn't mind the iron being slow-harvested as it wasn't needed in such quantity at that stage of the town.

On my mobile device watching it on my phone, I can't see everything. And at my parent's house on their Roku with slower internet speed, I can only see it at 480p which means that even though it's a huge TV screen I can barely make out the text in the game. And when it rains in the game, the whole screen becomes a little bit blurry

    The 3 x Labourer rule was really good. I had already started building one house per two adults, but didn't know about the dead teacher penalty. So, you probably saved me from that trap. I did have one question about the market though. I understand that only households within the markets sphere of influence(SOI) will shop at the market, so house placement is important. But I wasn't sure about the storage barns. Does a storage barn have to be within the SOI of the market for the market to draw upon its contents? In other words if the Fish Barn was outside the markets SOI would the market ignore the fish, or would it still draw fish from it for the market?

  • @Pinstar

    @Pinstar

    10 жыл бұрын

    Nope! The radius only is important for houses. If that distant fish barn is full of fish and there aren't many fish available on the market, a vendor will make the trip to go grab fish and bring it to the market. In later videos in the series (Episode 20+) you'll see Ficklewood spreading out and expanding with several markets, some a great distance from storage barns...yet they'll still manage to stock a little of everything I produce and import. The Vendors are quite diligent!

    Market vendors will travel anywhere on the map to get the items they need to fill up their market. This is one reason why it has such a high number of possible vendors for each market. However at the beginning of a small village like this, one vendor can keep the market pretty full since there's not so many places to visit

    Pinstar - I'm not sure if anyone has answered your question yet about the traders showing up if you don't have anyone manning the post (and I don't feel like slogging through all the comments on all the videos). I just loaded my post with firewood and venison, then removed all traders from the post. Then I saved the game (in case it didn't work) and shortly thereafter a boat showed up to trade with me. So in other words, as long as the trading post exists, they'll show up. Well, I guess I haven't tried it without any goods, so that might be a requirement for boats to show up, but I doubt it.

    Hey Pinstar, thanks for your videos, very informative. What would you say about doing the crossroads start but using stone houses from the beginning?

  • @Pinstar

    @Pinstar

    10 жыл бұрын

    I would question one's ability to gather the extra materials on time. You would need to have your starting area covered in stone to be able to gather the extra required materials fast enough, and an unlucky early onset of winter might cause some people to freeze to death before you can get their houses built. I do admit that I took my time transitioning to stone houses, but at least for those first six, I'd make them wooden.

  • @knexus5039

    @knexus5039

    It has been shown that all your beginning villagers just need one house with a fireplace going, to come and keep warm. So if you make one actual stone house and then just put the footprint down for the others until you get more Stone in the subsequent one or two years, you can still start up this cross design using stone houses.

    Followed your build to the letter. Was doin fine. Had some issues with food reserves. Nothing major. But each house still had their fair share. As soon as I placed the tailor things went pairshaped and I lost 15 people to starvation, even though there was food being placed into the storage hut. Bit disappointed actually. Maybe this build, two years on, doesn't work? I dunno. But I'm a bit grr...sigh

    Later on there will be other items the homeowners want but in the meantime, the villager just needs to travel one time to the market to get clothing and another time to get tools. Compared to how often he has to go get food and home supplies if he didn't have a market nearby, traveling and frequently to get a tool and a clothing is okay. The other case would be that this is just episode 3 or around 1.5 hours of the beginning of the game. Probably just around year one or two year two so far. Over time , there may be a market down there that serves that group of homes also.

    You only need traders when you need to transport goods to and from the trading dock. Just like physicians. You activate the hospital and hire a physician only when a disease occurs. Then you fire them, and deactivate when it's over. So you can keep the trading dock completely deactivated even whilst trading. The only time you ever need to activate it is when you employ traders to transport goods. If goods are already in stock, then you can keep the trading dock deactivated with no traders working. Traders will still come and go, and you can still conduct trades.

If idle workers at trading posts automatically work as laborers I'd be extremely advantageous if they continue to transport goods as laborers using their higher capacity wheelbarrows ^^y

    The funny thing is this works for orchards as well. Have the one farmer plant all the trees in the orchard and then move him into another job. The trees will grow on their own and then around year three or four when they're mature, assign a farmer to the orchard again and the farmer will start taking care of the orchard and then harvesting.

    From what I understand of it is this. The circle of influence is the area that housing is affected. This means people living in those homes travel to that market. The vendors working at the market will travel much further (way beyond the circle) to source the food and goods.

  • @charlieinslidell

    nekroneko The vendors will go to the ends of the map gathering up goods from storage and stockpiles while the market radius is the housing coverage it encompasses. Instead of each person going around the town picking up things it needs for the house they live in, the vendors do it for them in mass quantities. Your people can then just go to the market location to get all the goods, making it much more efficient and time saving.

    Market can pull from anywhere on the map and bring it to that market. The houses in the range of that market then pull items and resources from there for their houses. That means they don't have to use time traveling to some far spot to get the item they need. Now that doesn't mean the homeowner won't go somewhere to get the item but it means that he doesn't have to travel too far, if the item is already in the market.

    The planet in this game obviously takes 5 years to make one revolution around the sun. So everyone experiences only 4 seasons every 5 years. The species appear similar to humans from a distance but they're probably a slightly difference species since 1 year old children can be found walking around. Fortunately this means students graduate from schools exactly 8 seasons (representing 10 years duration)
