This is a linguistic difference. Just as Ram is called Rama in the southern states, in the same way Karnataka is called Karnatak and Kerala is called Keral & kannada is called kannad.

@@weinspires No, a word should be pronounced in the way locals do. If a person's name is "Vidya" I would call her so, not call her "Bidya" as Bengalees would do. Distorting names and using linguistic differences as the reason is a lame excuse.
