Bands & Artists Who Need To Retire

Here I discuss both bands and artists who need to retire. The reason for these retirements mostly fall into the following categories: they have grown stale, they are now parodies of themselves, they have become cliched sounding same old same old, they are an embarrassment, their music is mediocre, they are just looking for money, and finally so many of them are just plain don’t have the talent anymore. etc. This is simply an opinion. It is a fan's perspective, that is all. #classicrock #hardrock #heavymetal #progrock #progressive rock #rocknroll

I think the fans are just as much to blame as the artists, if not more so, as money sets the agenda...I know too many rock/metal fans who'd much rather see a legacy band play a 40-year old album it its entirety than earnestly explore any new artists, many of whom are just great if you give them the chance. Also, younger fans are not coming to the music in any great numbers; concerts and festivals are becoming a sea of grey hair. I am bracing for not much to endure 20-25 years from now.

I agree. I’m always looking for new bands and artists to enjoy; sadly, too many of them I just find ok or mediocre at best. I am looking forward to Castle Rat’s first album which comes out on the 15th. They are a cool New York doom sword and sorcery band with a female vocalist.

I was in high school in 1982 and I remember having a conversation with a schoolmate about Eric Clapton already being too old as he was almost 40 at the time. No one had the slightest clue that all those bands would still be touring at age 70 or 80. “50 years old” was considered ancient to us at that time.

If you are still healthy and still capable of being independent and music was your life and passion and it's all you know why would you want to retire? You can be a inspiration to the younger musicians that there is still hope in your senior years. Music is great to keep the old grey matter healthy. Just my opinion no offense intended. 😎👍

In my humble opinion, bands should retire when they are ready to retire. This topic is completely a personal opinion, for instance, I know people who love Deep Purples material pre-Steve Morse only and I know people who love Purple with Morse just as much if not more than classic Purple. I also don't agree it's all about ego. If a band continues on, perhaps they love what they do, money or no money, it's up to the fans to decide what is worth paying for. While some fans are okay paying $6000 for a VIP meet and greet, on the other hand there are fans like me who only pay for nose bleeds and parking lot tee shirts. Although I don't agree with the topic of your video, I appreciate the topic of your video because the reality is, within the next 10 years, these classic bands will be gone and I feel they will be missed more than we realize.

"Lynyrd Skynyrd" & "Molly Hatchet" Put their names in quotes because neither band has 1 original member. It's pathetic. Glorified tribute bands. Shouldn't cost more than $5 a ticket to see either of them

  • @UFO1601
    @UFO16014 ай бұрын

I think once a classic band goes down to only a couple of original members , then they become a tribute act . Iron Maiden don’t fall into that category. AC/DC and Judas Priest certainly do, Deep Purple also. Whilst bands like these can still attract an audience , promoters will still want them .

I agree with you about Deep Purple. I haven't liked one of their albums for a long, long time. I doubt a new guitarist will suddenly spruce them up. However, with a new guitarist, I am very curious what a new studio album would yield. Give the new guy a go with another album and if it fizzles, then respectfully retire. And also, I couldn't agree with you more about David Coverdale's voice. It's shot. Time to stop.

KISS went on far too long. AC/DC, as much as I love them aren’t what they were as far as albums go. The Stones are an obvious one too. Metallica as well, but they still put on a good show. Just a question for you, would you still see any of these artists live?. I would, but it’s the albums that are the problem. Everyone has just so much in them. We tend to compare their old stuff to the new and it doesn’t measure up. Thanks Dane, I always enjoy your videos.

A couple of people have complained that I don’t explain why these bands should retire. For most of them I do, they are just short and succinct; no I do not give a lot of details. It’s just the way I wanted to present my video otherwise it would have been close to 45 minutes long. In addition I believe saying that a band’s stuff isn’t any good anymore is a good reason. I’m not going to belabor the issue. Overall, if you would please read the description of the video before you watch it would help to understand where I’m coming from.

First two that came to mind during your intro - U2 and The Who. I was big U2 fan in the 80s and 90s, I can hardly listen to their early music I liked, because they've become so bad, such a caricature. The Who, I think I had 3 new versions of Live at Leeds, and there's probably 2 more. Turns out the original Six Song Live at Leeds is the best version. But I will disagree with Iron Maiden. Senjutsu is really an excellent album that I might prefer over Seventh Son or Somewhere In Time.

I wasn't a big fan of any Rolling Stones album since "Steel Wheels", but I quite like their latest "Hackney Diamonds" release. The first Stones album I play all the way through, since "Steel Wheels". Brilliant video. I agree 1000% with all the bands you mentioned. My own choices in no order would be: AC/DC - Powerage was a bit patchy Megadeth - The last fantastic album for me was 'Youthanasia'. I was let down by all the albums afterward Saxon - That new album was not great at all. I love the late 70's, 80's, and early 90's stuff Metallica - Haven't lived/loved anything since Black Album Moonspell Iron Maiden - Senjitsu was a bit disappointing. They should have called it quits after 'Book of Souls' Nightwish - Once was the last album I enjoyed. Wasn't into any of the new singers. Tarja was the best U2 Hammerfall - For me 'Legacy of Kings' is the only album I love Paradise Lost - I was amazed by Obsidian, but I can't see where they can go from here Guns 'N' Roses Deep Purple Venom Pink Floyd Pearl Jam Def Leppard - I really enjoyed 'Adrenalize', but they haven't put out anything good to great since then Darkthrone Satyricon - The first three albums are truly phenomenal, but anything afterward was a major letdown Therapy - Nurse and Troublegum are the only albums that are amazing Kiss Anathema - 'Judgement' was the last amazing album Manic Street Preachers On the plus side, some old/new rock/metal bands have put out some stunning albums/EPs. Billy Idol Immortal Watain Tribulation Mystic Circle Omnium Gatherium Draconian Opened Paradise NFD The Foreshadowing

Many bands / artists are way beyond their sell by date but as long as people want to pay exorbitant prices to attend their concerts and / or lap up the box sets then i believe they will keep going. One of my favourite bands is Caravan who issued a 37 c.d. box set which, for me, would be more of a chore to listen to. Other issues are the inclusion of demos, mono versions, live recordings, snippets of songs etc. However there is a market so at least for those people interested this is good news for them. As for Deep Purple i firmly believe that Purpendicular is the band's most 'musical' album and they feel more of a cohesive unit without Blackmore. Not a big fan of Saxon but their popularity is on the rise after years in the wilderness and kudos to them for believing in their music confirmed by their latest album making No.19 here in the U.K charts. As for new bands music is like a canvas and i think in terms of originality and excitement the canvas is becoming full i.e. there is less and less room for innovation within the rock 'n' roll genre. Also the landscape has changed and record companies want a return on their 'product' immediately and are less inclined to invest in a longer term future for bands. Anyway just a subjective opinion of course. BTW David Coverdale has retired... at least for the moment!

I just saw your "rant"video but the comments are disabled. When you have an opinion and share it online, people agree or disagree. So when you say someone should retire and they disagree they like to tell you. And yes invisible behind a keyboard makes them "speak"more harsh. I mean one man's favorite album is another man's worst album, that band put out. That won't ever change, just keep doing what you do. And when people discus nicely, like a handful under here, that's where the fun is. Right? I disagree about Bruce and the E street band should retire, I would like him to records a great album again, like Magic from 2007. But his shows are still great. It's like, I grew up ,and old, with that band.

My rant isn’t about disagreeing, it’s about doing it in an ugly or trolling manner. In addition some of the people said the ugly things they said only bc they chose to hear what they wanted to hear bc of selective hearing. People speak harsh as u say it bc they take an opposing view in taste as a personal affront which is just shortsighted on their part. It’s not personal ever it’s just how I feel so there is no need ever to be harsh.

Certainly but many an artist and celebrities in general live beyond their means. I’m more sympathetic with British bands from the 70’s where their taxes were unreasonable. But by now acts like the Stones and The Who should have enough money to live quite comfortably. Either way art should be about art first and foremost. Yes it’s hard to make stellar albums over and over again which is why if the art suffers then if you still need money then find a new calling like Chris DeGarmo leaving Queensryche to be a pilot. I’m old fashioned I guess I’m a big believer in art with integrity or no art at all.

    1) Thank God Elton John retired (keep your fingers crossed). Waaay past due. 2) Styx was ONLY Dennis DeYoung. Without him, there was no Styx. But his voice held up incredibly well for a long time after he and the rest of Styx parted ways. I don't know if that's still the case today or what he's up to now. 3) I don't know if James Taylor has packed it in (I just don't care any more). I WAS probably his greatest fan at one time. But he's hung around for about 30 years too long. His voice has been shot for YEARS. 4) Worst BY FAR: McCartney. His massive ego just won't let him quit writing and recording that inane crap. Voice: shot. Writing ability: completely shot. Very sad to see this one-time brilliant talent sully his career this way. 5) The Who: have you heard Daltry try to reach the notes on Baba? He's finally just going to sing it monotone in the one note he can hit. Again, HUGE fan at one time. I used to have SO much fun playing along on the drums to The Kids are Alright. 6) Cat Stevens: How could his voice get any worse...THAN IT ALREADY WAS?! And that's the ironic beauty of it - I've always LOVED his gruff voice. So when I heard him render The Wind solo at his house during the pandemic, my eyes welled up with nostalgia. 7) Jackson Browne: STILL totally LEGIT!! Hasn't missed a beat. Voice is still completely there. 8) Paul Simon: Why, oh why. Should've retired LONG before his voice completely petered out. ...And the list goes on. I think it's more about ego than money in a lot of cases. Imagine being on top of the world one moment, and then having to face the fact that you just don't have it anymore. These people with their big egos are just loathe to let go of that notoriety and fame - so it lets go of them, with sad results.
