    My partner and I live in clarendon South Australia. We have southern brown bandicoots here and we are lucky enough to have lived on a property with them hoping around in the garden! They are surprisingly smart and have very interesting personalities. They would steel our picknick food regulary..

    "Bandicoot" is (as far as I know) the only name of a marsupial that originates in a Dravidian language. It originally referred to a rodent found in India.

    I mean deer are oversized rodents here and they can be pests too, but they are still pretty darn cute. Mice are like the cutest animals ever, but basically a plague level pest.

    Huge Crash fan here, Crash wasn't initially designed to be a bandicoot, they made the design first and chose the species later. Species considered included a potoroo and wombat - while a wombat has never been featured in a Crash game, the character Pinstripe (the guy with the suit and gun who runs the power plant in the first game) is a potoroo.

    There are 3 predator free reserves in Victoria where the Eastern Barred Bandicoot is being protected. More have been found in Tasmania and some are taken to the mainland for breeding programs to increase DNA diversity. There are currently in excess of two million feral cats loose in Australia.

    the eastern barred bandicoot was considered extinct on the main land due to destruction of habitat (grasslands) until a colony was found living in a tip at Stawell !

    If some hunters are so into hunting, then let’s get them plane tickets to send them to Australia or other invasive specie infested places. I remember seeing a post where a hunter had 50+ foxes lying on his driveway only to discover later that they were in Australia.

    I'm American, and I knew about the bandicoot for at least 10 years. The eastern barred bandicoot, however, I'm not so sure about. Definitely not the Crash genus until today.

    I saw some in Redlands in 2006, someone had them as pets and must have released them in an empty field. It was near Mentone in Redlands California.

    You're right on the money here. In fact before being named Crash Bandicoot, one name up for consideration was Willie Wombat, even though he wasn't designed to look like a wombat either.

    I think they wanted to draw on a real animal that people knew little about. Like how a Tasmanian Devil is a real animal but the Looney Tunes character is basically something Warner Bros. animators made up.
