Banded file snake I just got

I bought a Banded file snake! I thought I was getting a baby but it's an adult. And sadly it has fungus. I hope it recovers.

These snakes live in coastal areas, so they can tolerate full marine all the way up to freshwater. That’s pretty cool.

The water salinity is too high for them to live long term in a reef tank, they will very likely die. They live mostly in brackish water and freshwater habitats. Occasionally they will go out to sea but never stay in saltwater long term.

I'm from the Philippines and we bought this snake a decade ago. You could just find it sold in a street market and very cheap. I don't know if they up the price. I was fascinated when I first saw it and the people selling them keep telling people that they are eels like come on eels don't have tongues coming out. I told my brother to buy two and he bought a female and a male for 25 pesos each which is half a dollar. The female got out of our aquarium and we thought its dead because its been a week. But amazingly we found it under the cabinet and still alive. Just to show that these snakes are amazing.

We call them DUHOL here in the Philippines. They're very common in Laguna De Bay and in Taal Lake here. Our fishermen catch them all the time and usually sell them as pets. About your tank size, it's more than enough for me for your snake to live in. As long as they are free to swim they're fine. Good observation that your snake is active. That is a sign of its great health. You should worry if it does not swim about. The white spots you noticed may be a sign that it is beginning to shed but if you have the time to check it with a specialised reptile vet it may help for possible fungal infections. ❤ Oh, two more things: One, don't worry about your snake escaping. It's purely aquatic and the last thing it will do is leave your tank for dry land. It only surfaces to breathe. Two, you may need to add some feeder fish for its diet to keep it from eating your other fishes. P.S. Your tank arrangement is awesome. No wonder your snake's active.

I used to have one when back in 2012 (i guess?) It once went missing during a typhoon and boy, flood is everywhere! even inside the house. I've no idea where to find it. It just appeared after a few days. I thought it's gone for good. I gave it to a friend eventually. PS: I got it for like, 60 pesos ($1+)

Is there not a log or rock or something sticking out the water where it can rest on above the water? Am I just not seeing it? I never heard of this subspecies so maybe I just don't know enough about them.

There's a log but this species is fully aquatic and doesn't come out of the water. They can barely move to slither away if they are on dry land. It's very strange and something I had never experienced before getting these and also the elephant trunk snake.

You should take your fake plants out. There will be more space, it will look nicer, and the plastic ones can be rough or sharp and the fish or snake could get cut on them. Since the spots are the same color as his stripes Id think it’s just part of his color. Like how California coastal kingsnakes can have some spots.

I’m pretty sure it’s going to die if even zoos and aquariums can’t keep these things alive in captivity. Not the wisest addition to such a small, artificial tank. These snakes have been devastated by over collection for the pet trade. Animals are not objects for you to collect. Do not buy endangered species.
