Band Saw Cool Blocks

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I have not been doing any woodturning because of the weather but I been doing some maintenance on my band saw. I install Olson Cool Block on the blade guide and learned to better tension the blade

Thanks, Cip, I will tune up the band saw tomorrow. But my table mount Craftsman saw uses ball bearings, not wear blocks. But here is the reason I have band saw problems. You mentioned it was cold in Texas. Well, winter in Washington state can really be cold in winter, so I have a small wood burning stove in my shop. I know I shouldn't, but sometimes I cut the firewood on the band saw.

Bill Wells Hey there Bill! I wish my band saw had ball bearing guides. That would be so much better. Retro fitting would cost as much as I paid for the saw. Cheers

Cip's Wood Chips Cip, don't be in a hurry to retrofit. I did my band saw tune up today and spent a lot of time on the bearings. I found some were frozen up, mainly the bottom ones (out of sight, out of mind). Metal to metal is not always best, especially between hard bearing steel and hard saw blade. I'm not convinced that bearings are better than wear blocks, except I do like bearings in the thrust bearing position (supporting the back of the blade). Also changed the blade after a winter of cutting fire wood. Shame on me. At least I will not cut fire wood on the band saw until next winter. Best; Bill

Hi Cip, I could be wrong here about getting a smoother cut, but when I changed my blade from a 6TPI to a 14TPI I found a massive difference in the cut I don't know if it was just coincidence or not. Maybe I just set the saw up a bit better with the new 14TPI blade? All the best Tony

Hello Tony! Yes, you are correct. More teeth, smaller teeth take smaller bits. So you get a smoother cut. Smaller teeth usually cut a little bit slower.
