I was 7 and remember it all the news report. The song being played at the xmas party and top infants or bottom junior school. Doesn't seem that long ago when I rewind my life in my head. Scary. How short life really is

@@matthewjdouglas6471 i was 19 back then and almost 55 now, so life is going fast and is waaaaay too short alright. And the most sad part is that most of our heroes in music and movies my generation grew up with are already dead or will die in this decade, because most of then are already in their late 60's and early 70's and even mid 70's. Sure some could get real old but the reality is that most of us will die between 70 and 80, so when this coronashit is over and life turns to normal and the 80's artist start to tour again, then don't skip those concerts because it can always be the last time.

An adorable moment during a momentous event-thank you for pointing it out! 💕🎤🥁It's hard to believe Phil Collins felt that nervous-he was one of the more experienced performers on the scene, although it was an impressive Who's Who of 1980s Brit pop.🍪 ☺️ I like how [can't recall his name 26:45] refers to Sting as having assumed the role of "head boy," and how Simon LeBon was flattered and ultimately comforted by his position around the mic next to the cool and confident cookie man. I saw in another documentary on the project that Sting hated singing "the bitter _Sting_ of tears"-he thought it was cheesy, which it sort of is, and you can hear the bitterness in his delivery in the final mix-Lol. Then-young Bono stands out as one of the best vocalists on the record-his is a voice for the ages. I actually never understood why he agreed to sing "Tonight thank god it's them instead of you" until now-or why Geldof wrote it, for that matter-but he sounds phenomenal and I can now fully enjoy that moment without cringing. Some of those "cats" as Phil called them were more legitimate as musicians than others: some had great voices and looks but were part of a fad, but they all generously lent their time and talent to charity and made what I consider one of the best Christmas songs of all time-I never tire of it. (I'm Jewish and watching this in May 2021.) R.I.P. George Michael-love his solo here, and I'm so pleased that Boy George finally arrived-fantastic sound, hangover be damned. I wonder why David Bowie (R.I.P.) didn't turn up, but it was generous of him to have done a promo. I don't know Paul Young's work outside of this, but his Bowie impression in this interview made me smile. Thanks to Bob Geldof, Midge Ure and everyone else who contributed to Band Aid and to this documentary. Hope to see another in 2024 (40th anniversary).

Just came across this documentary and it happens to be Christmas 35 years later. I was watching some George Michael videos and listening to his Wham! music as well. This is the third anniversary Of the death of George Michael. I loved then as I do now all of the artists featured here. Thanks for this song sparking the conscience of people. Were it not for this, USA for Africa and Live Aid and other charities may not have happened.

If it wasn't for this song, there would not be , "We Are The World" by USA for Africa the following year.

Awwww. The 80s were an absolutely MAGICAL time. Being a teenager during those 10yrs....every year was like a whole different lifetime. Almost on a bizarre level. Each year was an identifiable and distinguished moment of time in itself. We’d get so excited over every new year...just wondering what it had in store for us. And boy oh boy did a ‘year’ actually *last. None of this, “damn it just flew by” thing. This single is truly reminiscent of that Christmas especially. ☺️❤️

Am 16 yrs old at that time did not know the hardship they went through at that time. Thank you all. Unforgettable . i still have the record up to this day.

It was mainly Live Aid that earned Bob the honourable Knighthood. Midge Ure didn't make that much of a contribution to Live Aid. But it is of course still possible for him to receive a real Knighthood, being British.

Bob Geldof made an effort. That's more than a lot of people can say. Good on him. I love Sting's voice.

25 years later this song still inspires people to be charitable, compassionate and to empathize. Thanks God for a man like Bob. Every Christmas, since I first heard, I play this song.....it becomes a theme of every Christmas.

This song will always have a place in our hearts. Band Aid may all of you Never forget this song.

No one in our world should suffer from starvation or a famine as there's plenty to go around, god bless Bob Geldof and Midge Ure. I remember the eighties and the televised documentary of the Ethiopian famine it was deadfull and very hard too watch. I seen live on tv the brilliant historic concert live aid such brilliant artists the eighties music was brilliant.

I love this song so much and it never ever gets old.

Why hasnt Midge ure been given a Knighthood?! He deserves that recognition as much as Bob, for his services to charity and music

Me too! (Born in 1965) I believe we've lived thru the BEST eras of music! I've been collecting VINYL throughout most of those years...since I was 10 years old(didn't know THEN I was collecting; I was simply buying the music I loved! I was in my early 30s before I realized I was a 'collector'!). My now HUGE collection(it's been called 'atomic', 'astronomical', 'ballistic', 'powerful' & more by others! Lol!) consists primarily of rock music from the 60s to the present but the 70s & 80s are undoubtedly my favorite years! I still buy-in much larger quantities than one or two at a time-these past 5 years with the TIME & money to devote to 'crate-digging' since retiring early & finding some SWEET places & GREAT sellers from whom I regularly buy...all within an hour & a half drive from home! I also buy NEW vinyl; I LOVE Record Store Day, new Deluxe Reissues,180-gram vinyl, COLOR VINYL & Picture Disks! I have all the Fleetwood Mac box sets & their new COLOR VINYL Reissues in a beautiful box set limited to 2,000 numbered copies! They are GORGEOUS! I have #94 & #668! (one was a surprise gift from someone VERY special-but I love duplicates, triplicates, quadruplicates & more of my favorite artists!) Collecting vinyl is a hobby that will NEVER get old OR be finished! I'll never be able to own(or find) ALL of the music I love! But it sure is FUN trying! I was one of those who RAN to the store to buy this record as soon as it dropped! I still have it(like EVERYTHING else I've ever bought; I NEVER get rid of ANY of my vinyl; once I love a song, I love it forever!) in pristine condition with that amazing picture sleeve! This song truly touched my heart...with a 'feel-good' feeling about the way all of the artists came together to make this happen...yet broke my heart for WHY they did it! If they did this today, I would run out & buy 100 copies simply to support the cause...back then, I just didn't have that kind of money at 20 years old, but felt that I helped in my own small way...TRULY LOVING the song was a major bonus! I would have still bought one copy back then to support the cause even if I DIDN'T like the song! We KNEW then, that even tho all of it was an attempt to greatly help with a humanitarian disaster, that we were watching MUSIC HISTORY being made! It was one of several very special, magical, heartwarming moments in music! Indeed, it WAS the song that 'rocked the world'! I love 're-living' those times thru watching videos such as this! @@bobcummings8228 January 26th...sadly, I will soon be 55 years old! But...I still have the heart & spirit of my youth! Especially when it comes to my music! It's my first love & only constant throughout my life from my earliest memories at age 3!) Only when it comes to my music but ESPECIALLY when I go to concerts, do I feel young, vibrant, happy & carefree again! (Some things about my life are heartbreaking & incredibly HARD! For starters & the most difficult to endure, I have a mentally ill adult son who will never be completely independent.) After I retired, I vowed to start going to concerts...something I wasn't able to do when I was younger, unfortunately. I would have LOVED to see all my favorites while they were in their prime! (Thank goodness for KZread! I can & DO 'go back' & watch LOTS of concerts there!) But seeing some of favorites now is still a dream come true! Either I didn't have the time to miss work, didn't have a reliable enough vehicle to drive very far(all concert venues are 2 to 3 hours away from me, thus, I ALWAYS get GREAT seats! I say, "after driving 2 to 3 hours for a concert, I DON'T sit in the cheap seats!" Lol!) but mostly, because we didn't have social media to find out WHO was performing when & where! As far as the cost of tickets, that WASN'T a factor...I would have spent my RENT money back then to go! Lol! I had a VERY lovely, forgiving landlord at the time! (Can't get away with THAT with a MORTGAGE these days but SOMEHOW my retirement income INCREASED substantially rather than declined as most people's do?) I did see Matchbox Twenty in 1999 (took my oldest son to his first concert! I actially loved them MORE than he did & predicted their long-lasting success!) but for the life of me can't remember how I found out where & when they were playing. I believe it was advertised in the local paper with a number to call for tickets. Since retiring tho, I've seen Daughtry (only 5 minutes from my fiance's house! THAT is RARE in this area! He was at a local college with NO security so I stood AT the stage for over half the concert & Chris shook my hand!), Stevie Nicks on her 24 Karat Gold tour in 2016, Poison with Cheap Trick the summer of 2018, Cher from 4th row at a small venue in August, 2018 (with my mother who is the same age as Cher; it was Mom's first concert EVER! We had a blast!), Lindsey Buckingham's solo tour October, 2018 at a LOVELY, SMALL venue in Washington, D.C.-Warner Theatre (I LOVE small venues & that one is especially glamorous & GORGEOUS!), Cheap Trick AGAIN from 4th row at the same small venue where Mom & I saw Cher(MGM National Harbor, near Washington, D.C.)...rather than buying my youngest son another ticket to see them with me, I treated MYSELF to a Meet & Greet ticket & went SOLO! Trust me, with the camaraderie of their fans, I was NOT alone! Had my picture taken with the band with my arm around Robin Zander! That was certainly a dream come true having loved those guys since 7th grade! I also saw Fleetwood Mac this past March, Kiss on their End of the Road Fairwell Tour this past August(THE rock concert of ALL rock concerts as they pretty much say in interviews! They did NOT disappoint!); saw Shawn Mendes 2 days later(yes, I still have a teeny-bopper in me even tho I love Classic Rock, glam rock/metal hair bands! I just fell in love with Mendes' voice & music when I heard 'Mercy' not realizing he was just a young, little fella!), Three Dog Night this past July at another small venue (whom I've loved since I was a wee little girl...maybe 5 years old!) Also saw Kix with Slaughter here locally summer of 2018! I found out then that Kix plays here EVERY summer! Unfortunately, I had to miss it this year. Saw Michael Bolton earlier this year at the Kennedy Center in Washington,D.C. I hope I NEVER have to go back there for a concert! It's a small enough venue but it's hell getting there & the seats pack people in like sardines! Mom & I just saw Cher AGAIN on December 10th...but at a much bigger venue, Capital Centre in Washington D.C. So Mom got to see a real stadium-sized venue for the first time(and finally SAW what I meant when I mentioned 'nosebleed section' seats! I just COULDN'T go to ANY concert & sit that far away! It would just break my heart! Of course, we had GREAT seats but it wasn't the same as seeing her from 4th row at a small venue! But we still had a blast again! Nile Rogers & Chic opened for her...tho I always liked them, I admit wasn't very psyched about seeing them but we ended up being VERY impressed! They still sound absolutely terrific! Sounded better than MANY who are past their prime & put on a GREAT show! I know I'm missing some...but those were the highlights. Not holding tickets right now for any upcoming shows...been too busy to check Ticketmaster & Live Nation websites...but hoping that epic Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison & Joan Jett Stadium Tour is coming within 3 hours of me! I'm gonna be there! The thing about that one is...Crue is headlining but they are the band I'm least interested in seeing of the 4! Lol! Def Leppard & Poison are my favorites! What about you? Do you go to concerts? I'd love to go to more...but like my fiance & mother tell me, I can't see them ALL! I sure would like to try! Sooo many bands are touring nowadays tho, that it really is IMPOSSIBLE to see all of them...because at least during the summer, some of them play different venues on the same nights or consecutive nights! Heart and the Goo Goo Dolls with Train were performing either the night I saw Kiss or Shawn Mendes or only a day or two apart. Since I go to different concerts with different people, even if they played different nights, it would have been a virtual nightmare to coordinate all the travel to make ALL of those shows! I could have seen Heart OR the Goo Goo Dolls(I forget which?) if I was attending with the same person & simply stayed in a hotel between shows...but as it was I saw Kiss with someone different than Mendes which required more travel on my part and running on sleep deficit to see both of those shows! Funny fact: I broke my ribs in a freak accident (for the 3rd time!) at the Mendes concert. I said it would have made MORE SENSE to do that at a Kiss concert! Lol! Oh well! He was great! It was worth it! (THIS time...the other 2 times I broke them...NOT so much!) Happy New Year to you!

This BBC doc was so well done. Midge was an excellent host. I've watched this more than once over the years. It was an amazing moment in music history.

Funny you should say that.. Back in '84 - In North America, we had no clue about Status Quo or Heaven 17. Watching that video today, with all those legends in 1 room. They look completely out of place! Stardom in the UK isn't the same as "worldwide" fame.

Alot of respect...the young stars of the day rose to the occasion...no Beatles, stones, who etc

Fascinating looking back at footage of live aid. I was only a teenager at the time and still remember how excited I was watching it on the TV at the time. Surely one of the most most memorable days in history - and music for sure. A day with the most wonderfully talented pop / rock musicians that we will never witness again.

ive heard this so many times I can recite the entire xmas greetings part from memory.

Thank you, Band Aid for making history by feeding the world in Ethiopia...

An example of what humanity can do if given a task & purpose.

Possibly the greatest song of all time that actually stood for something real-human life and needless suffering of those less fortunate than ourselves. In '84 some of the biggest music star's of the time, certainly in the UK got together for free to help raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia, which was triggered by a documentary by Michael Buerk from the BBC. Bob Geldof saw the story and was deeply moved by what he saw and heard. The seed had been sown. 8 million pounds was raised from the fastest selling single of all time ,which shot straight to No 1. We are reminded each year how brilliant this music single truly was as each year when we hear it on the radio and are taken back-. We celebrate the song and sing to it once more, as though it had just being released again.

Phenomenal! There are a lot of "where are they now?" artists!

I remember this song meaning everything to me. I was a huge D2 fan and purchased this for every friend I had and wound up becoming a child protection worker particularly because of this song.

Midge Ure deserved so much more recognition for this than he got. He's a musical genius done so much work for band aid and live aid and is hot 🔥Midge Ure Paul Young John Taylor Nick Rhodes 😍😍

Phil Collins said it right "It was a one off". These bands were massive at the time and they all united for this single. They were conscientious and not overly commercialised.

The saddening story, I come from the area near to the disaster. I was three years during that time and my family told me how worst it was. I think it was both natural and human made tragic event. Really shocking!!

This have been an extraordinary documentary. Thank you Bob for having compassion n bring this idea to life. Thank u Midge for explaining behind the scenes on that recording day of the song. I was 15 yrs n I listened this beautiful song on MTV that Xmas year. I was not only happy to see all the bands that I love, but also became aware of the famine that Ethiopia was having. I play this song every year n it's always great to see u all singing this special song that has helped so many people. No wonder is so magical n very very special. W love from SF!

It was the best moment of my whole seeing all the best musicians of the time doing it for the dying. I still appreciate their unselfish humanity

1984 was the best year for music, I was 23 years old. Best time of my life.

I brought this song on vinyl I was 14 still one of my all-time favorite Christmas songs sometimes still listen to it when it's not Christmas

Back in the eighties people still cared.those stars didn.t had excuses they delivered when it mattered .the eighties for me whas the best decade ever.

God Bless the Brits!! I remember this time...it started before '84 though. I know because I'm a British descendant and I left my Band in Aug of 82 - left for University - and at some point in summer '81 we played an outdoor gig for " Wells for Africa ". A well known charity sponsored the event and I don't remember much of it...BUT it was Big, for our little Island and I am proud to have done it.. Terry Fox as well!

The real music best of the 80 s

R.i.P George michael 25 - 12- 16 . unexpected death. REST IN PEACE GEORGE MICHAEL! this christmas will never forget.. ur death on christmas day.. what a coinsidence.

Greatest Tribute to those who deserved it. What an amazing collaboration. Bob Midge Bono and the rest of the Artists. They planted a seed in everyone's Hearts and Minds. May God reward them all. Very Inspirational and some heartbreaking footage. May the Legacy continue on always.

For the younger crowd - this was one of three efforts by international artists and musicians to unite and raise awareness for Ethiopia. Band-Aid, Northern Lights (Canada) and U.S.A. for Africa all came out with songs during this era. Each of the three songs became iconic - a snapshot of the who's who of musicians at the time...many of which have sadly left us over the years.

This was Midge Ure's brainchild but Bob Geldof took all the credit.

@@tonyiban Agree Anthony. Idea was BG he brought in Midge to produce. When Live Aid 85 came to be that was the same dynamic in their partnership. Bob kinda took all the credit. Midge never thru Bob under the bus. Midge was a class act.

The two best songs of '84 ??? This and Last Christmas. Fact !!! To those who worked on this project and are no longer with us. And that includes my own Dad, who I remember watching this at the time. Never ever forgotten !!!

Such a wonderful song written with nothing but love and good intentions. It's a shame in recent times the grinches and curmudgeons have sought to find negatives with it rather than focusing on the positives
