Baltimore Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. on Gunnar Henderson, Jackson Holliday's debut & more

Спорт

Ben Verlander welcomes Baltimore Orioles legend and MLB Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. back to the show. Ben and Cal talk about Gunnar Henderson and his ceiling as well as how last year's postseason birth will help the Orioles this season. They also discuss the Orioles' new ownership, how wild it is that Los Angeles Dodgers' Mookie Betts is playing shortstop, what Cal saw in Jackson Holliday's debut & more.

    The Angelos letting the franchise go was the best thing for it. The problem was the lack of evolution with them. The Os are evolving and to have the IRON MAN on board. This is a dream for Os fans. I was in middle school during the end of Cals Iron Man run and one of my best friends was a rabid Cal fan. He was so stoked for that game. I still have the Baltimore Sun and other circulations about his achievement. It was an amazing time! Glad to see the Os swinging bats with authority again.

    My best friend Mark was at Royal Farms the year after we won the World Series and saw Cal in the store. He told me a fan asked him about his World Series Ring and Cal took it off and let him try it on ! Who does that today? Unbelievable gentleman!!!

    Do you know which Royal Farms it was ? A year after would be 1984 so was curious where some of the original stores were? I know RF first opened & their HQ is in Baltimore. Now they've expanded so much you can't drive a mile in/around Baltimore without passing at least 2 stores. Driving to Beach as well, used to see 1, now 1 on every exit off RT.50!!

    @@populisttrope9385 Thanks Man! I do remember seeing 1, maybe that exact one, when I was a kid but never thought much of it. How they expanded over past decade, I think I read over 200 in Baltimore City & County, and just opened first store in North or South Carolina as they expand south. Also read the chicken is so popular that new ones opening in a few areas resulted in a few Popeyes or KFC (a KFC only, not any combo KFC/ Taco Bell stores) having to close as a result of people loving RF chicken & at lower prices!

    As a lifelong O's fan I am so happy to see this team get sold.Espesially to a group that contains a billionaire who loves the team and will probably spend whatever it takes to keep this team contending for years to come and an O's legend. Being an O's fan is actually fun again and hopefully it stays this way for a long time!!!

    Welcome back Ben. Cal Ripken Jr., baseball royalty. Hard to believe that next year will mark the 30th anniversary of 2131. The record setting consecutive game streak eclipsing Lou Gehrig. A record that I believe shall stand & is not likely to ever be broken.

    A record that will never be broken. Quite frankly, I'm not sure anybody would try to attempt to break it. Just too much wear and tear on a body and probably hurt Ripkens offensive output over his career.

    @@123491622 Totally agree. Remember having an argument with an imbecile at the time, who was downplaying a record that had stood since the days of Lou Gehrig. He was saying that playing in all of those consecutive games was no great accomplishment. Just shook my head at the time. But upon reflection, I think the best response to give is if it is such an easy record to attain, then how come nobody else besides Gehrig and Ripken has done it or likely ever will do it again?

    We had and still have enough good bats to protect Gunner when he came up and struggled. Holidays struggled a little more. But was fine in the field. It's going to be interesting as the season progresses to see where the Orioles are and whether it's time to bring him up and let him work through batting struggles.

    Ben, First, you are a great interviewer. Second, I can't believe you didn't mention to Cal when you asked Gunnar who was his all time favorite short stop, he said it was Jeter. 😂

  • @chrisfrank2664

    @chrisfrank2664

    11 күн бұрын

    Gunnar is 22 so was born after Cal retired. It's funny he said that, and Orioles fans don't want to hear it. But just based on who Gunnar saw play growing up Jeter was a superstar in MLB, or you could say a celebrity and dating famous actresses/models so its understandable for a young man to look up to him! On tv/media Jeter's life looked pretty good! But having Cal to talk baseball, shortstop, and life is an amazing to have. The whole team for that matter.

    When I played, I ALWAYS was looking to swing at the first pitch…most of the times that’s the best strike you’re going to see in an at bat…HATE when dudes routinely watch a ball go right down the middle on the first pitch…now you’re down in the count and at the pitchers mercy imo
