Baltimore mother calls on someone, anyone, to fix city schools

A Baltimore City mother is calling on someone, anyone, to fix city schools. And she says major changes need to happen now, or she’s leaving.
“There’s nothing up there for them. Nothing. They go there to get babysit for eight hours and come home,” said Nichelle Watkins, the mother of a Baltimore City student. “I feel like they don’t care. It’s not their children; they don’t care.”
Watkins is fed up with Baltimore City Public Schools.
Her son is in fourth grade at Johnston Square Elementary. For years, she says she’s been asking the school system to hold her son back to give him time to learn the material instead of pushing him through the grades.

There are black people in congress and the supreme court. Affirmative action became law in 1965. These schools have $21,000 per student. That is more than the public schools in my area. Discipline is enforced in white majority schools but not black majority schools. The mother mentioned that her kids are afraid to go to school. I never left it up to the school to educate my child. While I carried her in my womb, I engaged with her. After she was born, everything we did with her was about stimulating her brain and learning. From a very early age, the library was our second home, and I made sure that she knew what she needed to know at whatever age she was and then some. Parents, the school might introduce some things to your child(ren), BUT ultimately it is your responsibility to ensure your child(ren) is on par for whatever grade they are in. Kudos to mom for reaching out to the school to voice her concerns. However, I can't help but wonder what she was doing at home. I hope she understands that it will take more than moving or holding her son back for him to catch up. It's going to take a lot of work from both of them.

Patents have a part, but the school system needs to take accountability for teaching because that is their job. Once students are behind, it is hard to catch up. The gap gets bigger and compounds. We have no clue if these parents are proficient in math or reading as many likely went thru the same / similar education system.

Both my children were able to read very well by the end of their kindergarten year not just because of the instruction by their teacher but my reinforcement at home. I read to both of them EVERY day. I’m a parent of a HS senior. My daughter began reading at the age of 4 BEFORE attending kindergarten. She was able to read at a young age because I valued reading and education even while she was in the womb. I read to her before and after she was born and bought her TONS of books. If books are too expensive then library cards are free. These parents need to start instilling a love of reading and education into their children even before they are born. You are your child’s primary teacher and no one else will take responsibility for their learning the way you can and should. I was NEVER worried about my black daughter not being able to read because that simply wasn’t an option for us. I taught reading at Job Corps and could teach anyone to read to prep them up for GED. But you’ve got to find reading material that they find fascinating and then leave them alone to do their reading but with some occasional assistance.

These women need to stop screaming about who doesn't care for them and their children. God cares, and He's given each of us the ability to help ourselves. Moms, (those who rely on their children's teachers to teach them basic ed) get out of bed (off your butt), go to the teacher's supply store, and pick up basic materials, like flashcards, with alphabets and numbers. There are phonics systems that you can also get at a minimal cost, that need to be shared with your children, while they're still babbling. Don't wait until they're in school. Learning begins at home. My son, a high-ranking US Marine is 40, and he was reading at 3. My daughter is 24, working on her Masters, and she too was reading at 3, playing the violin, in ballet, and had her own little computer. The flashcards could very well be a learning tool for those adults that have difficulty reading. And for those who can read, read to your children, and purchase them children's books 📚 No one should be crying like this while blaming someone else for what they're obligated to do. This is sad. 😟

@regina cameron Amen, this is my point. I too was a single mom with my son, and when he was around 5, his teacher and principal reached out to me and told me that maybe he needed to be on Ritalin, because he was so hyperactive and unfocused, in Kindergarten. Well, I immediately shot back in defense, and let them know that if he wasn't focused, it was because his instructor was incompetent, and just maybe they needed to lay off the Ritalin. He was already reading and doing math before he entered school. Within weeks, of being approved for the Houston Preparatory Academy, he was removed from that school. Because his little mind was now being challenged, he excelled, was focused, excited about school, and admired his dedicated teacher. Within a year, he was testing 3-grade levels higher, with a more advanced curriculum. During their early education, I challenged the teachers, and always wanted to know what they were currently doing in the classroom, so I could also get involved at home. Both my children were honors students, and my daughter continues to be. Anyway, God bless you, and thanks for sharing. You're a testimony 🙌 🕊

Absolutely. This is really caused by growing up in an environment where there is no reading material and the adults don’t model the behavior of reading. My grandmother used to read to us, then my parents took me to Episcopal services where I saw all of the adults reading aloud from the 1928 Book of Common prayer, a literary masterpiece originally written by Thomas Cranmer, reformation Archbishop of Canterbury, and then finally my parents enrolled me in a book club where I could order books which looked interesting to me. The notion that the schools can teach everyone to read is ridiculous. For one thing, elementary education majors are among the least academically talented of all college graduates. I taught parochial school as a secondary social studies major with a concentration in European history and it was painfully obvious that the typical primary grades teacher was not exactly a mental giant. True, they can read, but to a great extent they are not actually readers. Then also they typically didn’t like math very much either. Women go into grade school teaching because pathetically, they think that little kids are “cute”. The normal adult really isn’t all that enthralled with little kids, finds them dull, and in particular is disgusted by spoiled brats.

How can they teach when they are constantly trying to regain their attention because of how poor their behavior is! Those teacher are raising those kids! Where is the boy's father? He needs to help pay for his child to get tutoring or go to a Catholic school. Also, the mother should have known that the system is designed for poor black children to fail. She has lived in Baltimore all of her life, she even notes that the pathway for black boys, especially, is either prison or death. All the more reason to not have children that you cannot provide for because you and your children are at the mercy of city resources and leaders, and as a result you too are setting your child(ren) up for failure.

I taught my kids to read, write, think critically, etc. I didn't trust the public school system to do this. I did it myself. The mom said it correctly. They don't care because they're not their kids. Yep. They're YOUR kids! YOU care! Take care of it YOURSELF! Nobody cares about your son in the Baltimore school system (they only care about their generous paychecks), but YOU care. Stop waiting for the system to come to the rescue. Get him help yourself. You can put more money into the schools, you can pay for all the tutors and counselors money can buy, you can enroll the kids in as many after school and sports programs as they can handle, so they have no idle time and lots of positive adult role models, and it won't make any difference. You can easily Google studies that show just how bad growing up without their biological father in the home really fucks a kid up, and we know that the behavior of women and children is highly influenced by their surroundings. So when you have a school where all the students are from homes with single mothers who were raised by single mothers who were raised by single mothers, it's a recipe for disaster.

This will only get worse for the phone generation in poor cities. I can't blame the school because you should be reading before attending. I am a product of this system, and I understand it. There are many factors in a city like Baltimore and most urban cities. There needs to be higher standards in the homes to produce successful students. The problems are well-engrained into the communities and begin long before and after the school bell rings. Accountability starts at home. If every student in only one class showed up attentive and ready to learn, the entire system would be shocked. If you look at every report on the failure of pretty every school system, you here the quote, "The parents blame the_______." When do you start to ask the parents what are you doing at home to fix the issue?

So I struggled and had to play catch up from 6 thru 7th grade and some summer school just to catch up to the other kids wasn't the easiest thing to do. When it comes to the situation in the video I'm not sure what to say honestly.

So the whole school is remedial. What do you do when all the children are remedial? This is a class issue.

The superintendent of Baltimore schools is responsible for what happens , who is that person ? That is the person to hold accountable

Ma’am you’re supposed to go over lesson and homework with your child each school night and make sure they are prepared for class Monday morning. Take him to library and turn it to Sesame Street.

Absolutely unacceptable. Our children deserve so much better. Policies for disruptive students need to be overhauled and placed in classrooms among like students with extra and specialized teachers who are paid higher wages to help those students with their social behavioral problems and to meet and teach them where they are- all so that the other non disruptive students can LEARN in their classrooms. Win win for all students.

I agree.. but if it’s just about every student that’s a problem then how does that work? It won’t work in Baltimore. This isn’t a school problem.. it’s a social problem, it’s home environment problems.

This is really sad. I moved out of the city when my son was leaving 3rd grade but I taught my son to read and write. You have start early with them when they are babies. I prepared both of my children for school. It does also help to move to a good school district but your children have to be prepared or they will fall behind in a good school as well.

When I was in school I used to do my homework with my family monitoring me. I also had to sit and study at designated times at home with them monitoring me. We had teacher and parent meetings where they'll sit down together, with us present, and discuss our merits, failures and behaviours. If you fell behind in certain subjects you'd have to stay after school and go to school during the holidays in order to catch up. Schooling kids is a job for both teachers and parents. If any of these two fall behind or opt out of their duties, the kids suffer. I'm a black african woman. 33 years old now. African american parenting is severly flawed and lacking. Their schools too!
