The opening horn sounded at KwaZulu-Natal’s premier lineup of Ballito and competitors were tested right out of the gates in tough conditions. Reigning World Junior Champion Sierra Kerr overpowered her debut alongside fellow World Junior Championships contender Janire Gonzalez Extaberri and recent CT wildcard Leilani McGonagle. More mixed results ensued for the men with higher-seeded competitors facing elimination aside from dynamic showings from Kai Martin, recent Narrabeen hero Jordy Lawler, former World Junior Champ Jarvis Earle, and more avoiding early exits. The playing field leveled the odds right away and now the marquee, top seeds await their debuts to showcase what they’re capable of when put to the test.
