Ballarat’s Greatest Gold Mine - The United Extended Band of Hope Gold Mining Company

Today we're going to take a look at another of these brilliant gold mine lithographs from the 1860s, and this time it's Ballarat's United Extended Band of Hope Company at their No 2 shaft.
This lithograph presents us with a view of the mine's above ground structures, the interior of the puddling and engine houses, and a portion of their underground workings, and there are several interesting features shown here which give us insight into the incredible story of underground deep lead mining.

My house sits on top of the Sebastopol lead which was the longest lead as it followed the ancient watercourse of the Yarrowie River the longest river in the Ballarat area. Ballarat held the world record for a time in the largest solid gold nugget ever found-the Welcome nugget at 0ver 2000 ounces of pure gold. The miner who found it imbedded in the roof of a tunnel, fainted. Other miners were pulled out unconscious. Kitty's lead just South of here produced many more large nuggets than any other places mentioned in the Red Nugget Book from 6 inches depth to 6 feet. They say the Bendigo mines produced 60 tonnes of gold and due to the groundwater has still as much left there.

I visited Carisbrook for the first time last weekend. My father will be retiring there, so I imagine I'll be exploring a fair bit over the years. Drove past the Maldon dredge, but didn't have time to stop.

Great story which could be expanded considerably. I see Peter Lalor on the shareholders list assuming it is THE Peter Lalor. I am a Ballarat resident and worked at the currently operating gold mine until i retired, so I find this stuff hugely interesting. Thanks for doing the research and publishing it for us.

Thank you Michele, for yet another great video. I recently read about the Lambing Flat gold area at Young NSW. The report said it was abandoned due to running ground. So one wonders if the miners had tried the Ballarat system of treating the wash with shafts at two levels and draining the shafts below the levels? Thanks again.
