Balintawak For Beginners: The Basics Of Filipino Martial Arts

Balintawak encompasses diverse meanings, but some would say it is a Filipino martial art called Balintawak Arnis, specializing in close-quarters combat. It is associated with specific locations in the Philippines, such as barangays or streets. This close-quarter FMA system excels in teaching speed, defense, and can be a ton of fun. Here, Belton Lubas of Warrior Strength Martial Arts demonstrates how to teach Filipino martial arts to beginner students.

This is the kinda of theory I like that combine the stick and empty hand in unison. That is called "Theory" just like music theory. This is a real Teacher of the art oppose to the nonsense I see. This guy has vision! 🥰

Amazing work, sir. I love that liver punch off the snake disarm. The two-for-one strikes of FMA are really eye-opening, and like you demonstrated, it's not just about memorizing and doing the sequence that exact way. You practice the drill one way, and it flows into other ways. After practicing enough of them, you go beyond the specific sequence in the drills, and you understand the principles of body movement behind all of them, so you can improvise under pressure and have so many options built into your muscle memory. Many people try to criticize these drills in FMA, but they don't understand that doing this disarm sequence is just like an "example", just like doing glove drills in Boxing where someone feeds you a specific pre-set combo, so you start to learn how to chain these moves together in different ways. Really great stuff, as always, Guro Belton. More than just teaching the moves, you really do a good job of explaining why we're doing them - and how by doing these drills, it's actually showing you deeper concepts that can be applied in countless ways.

Hey Belton. Gary F here. I worked w you a couple of times. I spoke to you about acupuncture in March. 1 of the main things I love about you is that you are a "smart" martial artist. Love the concepts you teach.

Love your video. I'm a practioner of Inosanto Kali. I've always loved Balintawak Escrima as well. You guys have some of the most practical drills that I've seen in FMA. I love that the live hand is not only used for monitoring, but being used to strike as well. Great work!

Tell that to the Philippine Armed Forces, US Armed Forces and multiple Military groups and SpecOPS around the world. They train extensively with kali. Especially they have been trained with Pekiti-Tirsia Kali among other schools of kali.
