Bard is such a strong class to have in your party, and most importantly, they are soooo much fun to play
As a Bard main even from D&D 3.5 I can proudly say that my first character will be: - an ork Bard using drums as instrument (if it's possible) - producing shittiest music possible buffing all it's STR forcing him to go melee - getting praised by the people around more thanks to his furious aura than his skill in music - obv his life goal will be create a famous ork-estra 💀💀💀

Dipping into warlock works well RP wise. A lore bard making pacts for arcane secrets is very much in character, especially since bards tend to be more “chaotic” (in the traditional DnD sense).

It actually does something extremely important: it changes the combat music, which every player knows is a massive buff since now you have the boss music, not them. Imagine being the enemy and dying, knowing that the last thing they hear is the chorus to Bard Dance.
Lore bard can also be a really good caster, not just support. Bard spell list has a lot of good Crowd Control with the occasional damage spell, Hideous Laughter or Sleep as the offensive CC choice in lvl 1, then Cloud of Daggers is a solid damage over time for a lvl 2 spell, and the spell secret in level 6 can be taken as Fireball, just one level later than Sorcerer or Wizard.

Comming from pathfinder and being used to bard being medium spell casters, learning just now that they are full casters is really a shocker... This is a massive buff!!! If you compare bard to sorc, (this is a bit crude comparison) but basically you trade meta-magic for all the nasty schenenigans bard have, which is a pretty solid deal IMO...
College of Valour is actually quite good for a caster bard. Boosting your AC so much with medium armor and shield will help your defenses a lot, which I imagine will become quite important on Tactician difficulty.

Great video analysis as always!!
I only have experience with dnd up to 3.5 (and super excited to get into it again with bd3!). This iteration of bard sounds awesome. I love that bards are full spellcasters now!
I played a Bard in the EA and they're great for a main character since they make a great face. There's some fun interactions with Volo too haha
For my tabletop D&D, the bard is my favorite character to play, as my group is on the lower combat side. For my video game play, I typically like to swing big sword or shoot big fireball and min max on that sort of things.
My friend group has a fun idea for doing a Rock Band playthrough where we all play a bard. Not sure how itll pan out but this video will help alot with that
I really enjoyed Bard in this game with instruments it was cool casting spells while shredding that Lute!
One very important thing to remember when it comes to Bards of Lore is how Cutting Words is implemented. You can set it up as a Reaction with ask. Then whenever any monster attack anyone in your group and has int of 5 or more you get reaction with popup and the attack rolls. You can see for example: monster A attacked/casted spell on party member C. he needs roll of 15 to hit and he rolled 16. You can then chose to spend one inspiration charge to add 1d6/8/10 to their roll and in many cases when roll is close, change the outcome. like a counterspell for any attack or charm/fear. It feels super fun to change hit to miss on you battlemaster and triggering riposte :)
First class I've ever played in D&D and still my favorite! I am a bit sad they didn't implement College of Whispers but hey, we do get many spells that can incite fear, madness, etc.which kinda replicate the more sinister vibe of that class. Very curious to see if College of Swords will work well with their reworked pact of the blade warlock or if it's better to stick to a more support-focus type of Bard.

Yeah with the way the discussion has been, it looks like you’ll need to take 3 levels of warlock to get the good bits you want. At that point is it worth taking 1 more level for the ASI / feat or is the higher level spell you get at bard 9 worth it. Or is taking 3 levels even worth it to begin with when you really want to be 10 for the magical secrets. Tough choices

Also makes for arguably the best healer in the game. Start as level 1 life cleric for up to heavy armor proficiency, bonus to all healing spells and better saving throws. Then all levels in lore bard and pick the best healing spells from each class. Goodberry, aura of vitality, then whatever other spells you like. Grats, you are the best healer along with the best support character outside of paladin, and a full caster to boot with early access to high level hybrid casters spells they themselves will only get late or never due to the level cap.
In most CRPGs I always pick fighter/tank class but I am definitely picking Bard for my first play through in BG3.
Thanks for a great overview! I tried paladin during early access and didn't find it quite fun to play, hence I'l definitely try bard on final release.
Bards in 5e are great, and I love the implementation of the class in BG3. The whole thing where you can use the Bard's performance outside of combat as a distraction is just such a quintessentially Larian-style environmental manipulation. I'm definitely considering playing a Bard my first time through the game.
Bard will be my 1st playthrough class. I’m just extremely torn about also taking The Urge as an origin. I’d probably stay off that blood stenched track. Also a murdering bard sounds appealing and pretty metal.
For me Bard was always this class that as a kid/teenage would be the last option I'd like to play. But as an adult it's among if not the favorite. And looking at the comments it's not just me. ps. Love the subtle flex with the flaming 2-hander ps2. Congratulations on passing the 200k
This video genuinely has me considering rolling a Bard {possibly multi classing as a Paladin, as well} for my first run. I'll probably change my mind 20 more times after watching the rest of the videos, though 😅
Personally I find Valor bard to be the best spellcaster and support. The 2 big appeals are the upgraded bardic inspiration which is better than every other subclass, and great armor proficiencies. Using medium armor and a shield really helps with your AC and maintain concentration on your big spells. If you have 16 Dex, you can wear half plate, wear a shield and take the feat medium Armour master to be a full caster with 20 AC without multiclassing.
Bard/Warlock Been my choice and I love it! I put a bunch of points into Wisdom so I can have a Wise character as well as charismatic. And now I have Intuiton and Perception wich makes a great play though as well as the bards Persuasion and Deception!
Thanks for your amazing videos
This right here will be my first run. A Drow Bard. Never played that class and race in early access cause I'm saving the experience for full launch. And after playing a bit of act 1 I start to understand how important all those little skill check are. So having a class that can excel at them and even game the system a bit during conversational skill checks feels like a decent choice for a first run where I don't know what expects me.

My first playthrough will be a half elf Dark urge Bard/Warlock (Level 8/4 or 9/3). Really looking forward to it!
After much consideration and after watching this video I decided to go the bard (main (valour))/ rogue way. picking locks, stealing, charming my way through conversations and telling enemies their moms look ugly.
Keep 'em coming!!!!
While I am debating which race to choose, after hearing that Larian decoupled stat bonuses from the selection, I'm definitely still leaning into a College of Valor Bard for a first playthrough. I was thinking of picking up Polearm Master just to ensure that I always have something to do with my Bonus Action(aside from a clutch Healing Word), and get to use my Reaction more often to strike approaching enemies.
Kind of want to do a Drow Bard/Paladin. I think that would make my character into heavy metal. Lol. I wasn't even originally going to get this game. Long time video and TTRPG gamer, but I haven't played anything like this, or D&D since AD&D second edition. I started seeing more and more talk of this possibly being the RPG of this generation, and the more I look at it, the more I agree. This might be my first return to D&D in some form in a very, very long time.
first ever character i've created using DnD method (which i made for this game too) is a bard, can't wait to play!
I really like to multiclass my bard with a few levels of barbarian. This can make a very interesting skald type of character which can use a lot of spells, wear decent armour, use all weapons, give inspiration, and if needed rage and deal and tank decent damage
Note for new players. Strength battle bard is suboptimal but you can do it, you can make a dex focused battle bard using "finesse" weapons. It's just as strong and you don't have to be anxious about stat allocation :) bards can also learn other classes spells making them very powerful casters if you choose that direction.
@shadedergu9921
11 ай бұрын
Additional Note: A Valor Bard built around combining the War Caster and Polearm Master Feats with Magical Secrets is the one time a Strength Bard is Optimal, just because that 10 Foot Bubble of casting any single target action spell in the game as a reaction is so good (unless they changed this combo in BG3), though it was always funny even without building around it with MS spells, a Polymorph or Dissonant Whispers against an approaching beast can oftentimes just save the party a lot of harm on top of whatever you cast/did during your turn. Otherwise I can't wait to see if they expand the level cap with DLC cause I want the Lore Bard that can inspire themselves on Initiative and Counterspell and the Valor Bard who can drop Meteors on an action and still attack on a bonus action.
Tbh the updated Song of Rest is waaaaay better than the normal one to have in BG3. Sure you'll probably use more hit dice per day with the change. But being able to take another Short Rest that you wouldn't have been able to prior is super powerful. Getting to recharge Bardic Inspiration later on in levels, recharging warlock spell slots, recharging Channel Divinity, recharging Action Surge and Second Wind. Etc.
Valor also gets a shield, which is possibly even more important than full martial weapon access as most bards won't have a lot of strength anyway.
A vengeance paladin multiclassing as a bard is the ultimate Death Metal vibe

I think it's odd that they put the two martial bard subclasses in the game, but i think valor is getting short changed here a little bit. Getting access to a shield is hugely helpful for defense and giving more options for using bardic inspiration on others is great. I love blade flourishes, but they remove some of your support ability. That said, swords is selfish but very fun. You'll probably only ever use defensive flourish which will add some damage and make you super tanky. Swords also runs away with things once you start factoring in multi-classing. I would have loved to see eloquence in here. I think they just wanted to add the PHB stuff as promised and swords os probably the most popular college outside of PHB.
Besides Linzi from Kingmaker, I have very little experience with bards and even then her role mostly served as a backup lockpicker/trapspringer and an additional ranged support but this video makes quite an appealing case for the bard and I might consider swapping out the rogue/thief class for one if they are able to fill the role. Since I typically tend to outfit the party ranks with premade companion characters, it remains to be seen what characters the allows me to recruit. Frankly, being the meathead that I am, I don't think too far beyond a specialized two weapon melee character but the warlock from Kingmaker definitely left an impression on me and I am definitely looking forward to adding him/her as a party member.

I am def gonna swap out rogue for bard. especially having a warlock and fighter in the party with so many short rest abilities. They seem to replace rogue well and are also masters at conversation. A really good choice for your main. My only issue is deciding on going melee support with my cleric or melee support with the bard and dps focused vice versa. Most likely melee bard.
Holy Word is on the Bard spell list. A 1 level dip as a Life Cleric gives Heavy Armor, shields, and makes them very good support healers for only a Bonus Action. The heavy armor will interfere with dex checks, so be aware of that.

The only thing that will suck for a bard/life cleric healing build is I doubt Aura of Vitality is in the game since paladins dont get high enough level to take it but lore bards at level 6 would normally have access to it. Which really sucks because its the best healing spell in the game at low levels (3rd level spell but paladins dont get 3rd level spells till after level 12). Otherwise you can have a bard that heals better than a pure cleric, counterspells better than a wizard, blasts almost as good as a wizard , skill checks almost as good and in some cases better than a rogue. Dont think many of the nuances that make lore bards so great will make it into baldurs gate 3 though, (high level paladin spells like AoV and Greater Steed), Counter spell bonus from being a non proficient ability check (same for init)

And every class probably has unique things like this. im not sure u can just dip a level get a tag and see those class specific stories, maybe u can, again just less imaginable.
For a first run not knowing so much of the game a College of Lore skill monkey is an obvious choice.
Gonna try to play as Bard 4 + Warlock 8 on my second playthrough. Should be pretty good to blast enemies and buff party members. Song of Rest would help a lot with Warlock's spell slots
Bards can be kinda op. I had to destroy a dark orb stealthily as part of a side quest, so I had my bard do this in front of many witnesses. Even though a lot of them saw this happen, he was still able to use his very high charisma to convince them that he was innocent.
Sounds cool. I want to do this too now. If it’s possible my starting party may just be full of custom characters.
I love my Bard. She solves mysteries and knows arcana and how to persuade and how to talk to animals. If I can find a large dog sidekick, some glasses, someone who can build traps, a dirty hippie, and a large blue wagon to ride around in my build will be perfect.
My first playthrough will definitely be a tiefling lore bard. Face the party, all the best skill checks, tons of support, and an excuse to be sassy and make jokes.
Regarding Swords vs. Valour, one of the biggest differences is that Valour is the better choice if you want to be able to use ranged weapons rather than focusing on melee. I'm curious to see if Larian homebrews a bit more and moves some of the 12+ level class and subclass abilities to Level 12 to give players something a bit more exciting at max level than just a ASI or feat. Swords gets free uses of a d6 Blade Flourish at Level 14, and Valour gets Battle Magic which will let them use a weapon attack as a bonus action after casting a spell. Guess we'll see!
The omega song that the bard can learn is "Baby Shark". When you play the song all monsters must make a saving throw or take massive psychic damage XD

The downside being that your party members are also at risk during the song. That, or attack you themselves to get you to stop playing!
A disappointing partial playthrough before, was followed by a great full playthrough after Larian reworked the reaction system. Not sure how DnD 5e handles it, but the Lore Bard's Cutting Words is a reaction in BG3 that lets you see the roll before deciding whether to apply, making it very strong. Also the Lore Bard gets to choose 2 spells from any Class (Fireball, and Counterspell will probably be my choices) at level 6. Will definitely play a College of Lore Bard at some point, probably taking at least 3 levels of Sorcerer starting at level 7.
I swear the hardest thing about playing a Bard in this game is deciding which spells to choose. Every time I level up, I’m scratching my head for an hour. Fantastic class, that gets in to some funny situations. Bards are incredibly fun to play.
I like the focus on class fantasy over number chrunching
I think my playthrough will be a good lore bard!! Whenever it comes to XBOX. My hope is before Christmas.
The fact that the instrument shows on your character is amazing, sounds strange maybe - but so many games do not actually do this. Like, quivers for bows.
Waiting for the Rogue overview! I'm going to play an assassin rogue!
I have, on D&D 5e, a hafling bard (swords) + fighter who is a menace in performance, intimidation and combat. Almost untouchable but fragile. I wonder how much of him I could replicate on BG3! 😂 Sounds a lot of fun trying it out.
I really enjoyed my EA bard and this is one of the classes I am thinking about starting with, since none of the companions are bards.
Loving all these bg 3 videos. 14 days for final release 🎉
I'm stuck between warlock/paladin and warlock/bard, but also now wondering if tri-classing them wouldn't be incredibly fun.
Don't forget about magical secrets. Lore bard can get Fireball at lvl 6. I'm probably going with Shield and Counterspell on Release( or maybe Spirit Guardians) because some other companion will have Fireball (Wyll or Gale). But Lore bard is very customizable with the secrets, even though it's "only" two spells of your choosing. I disagree on Duelling being worse for Swords bard. Bard has Inspiration as a bonus action, so you won't do lots of off-hand attacks for dual wielding. You want the bonus action for other things. Dropping down to d6 Scimitar from Rapier d8 is another hit for two-weapon style. I'm Duelist all the way for Valor/Swords ;)
I'm tempted to do a half-orc bard for my first run. I just hope there's a feature (or mod) that causes characters cover their ears and run in horror in response to my performances.

Shake-spear, the spear wielding half-orc bard? Yes I have heard of him.

You just gave me flashbacks about the orc bard that you’re sent out to kill for the Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim.

That moment when all the enemies throw down their weapons and surrender on the condition that you stop playing.

Wtf was the name of that Skyrim Orc bard? Lurz? that type of reaction sounds to me like rolling a 1 and critically failing a performance check.
I was honestly never a fan of bards playing the tabletop version, which may be in part because of the circles I play with. Regardless, I never thought I'd enjoy bard in BG3 but upon playing co-op with a friend who challenged me to play my "least-favorite class" I decided to give it a try and...my goodness, I've been thoroughly won over to the point I'm debating having my full-release character being a bard on my first run.

Yeah its a great class, it just kind of gets overlooked due to all the memes and stereotypes about bards
Bard for my first playthrough. Shield dwarf + dark urge striving for good.
Probably more for the build style videos but one thing about Bard's Magical Secrets is that they can get some cool otherwise class specific spells from Paladin and Rangers before they can. As Paladin and Ranger get their 4th level spells at 13, a Bard can get those spells at 10 with Magical Secrets. Of course Larian may not put those spells in if they're unattainable for normal Paladins and Rangers with the cap...

I worry about that as well. Aura of Vitality should be fine, but I wonder if we will be able to get Find Greater Steed (w/c is from Xanathar) and Swift Quiver...
Didnt even think about multi classing the bard def gonna be the first run now
Will you make a monk video? I have never played d&d but after watching the lariat stream I became very interested in this class

Bard: The entire reason draconic bloodline sorcerers exist.
I remember in the 90s in a lot of early final fantasy games the bard was like the final boss of the classes/jobs you could level. They had tons of requirements in ff tactics, and were crazy powerful in battle in most of those old games. It always struck me as odd, why is this bard class so difficult to unlock and often stronger than a summoner or red mage or a whole bunch of other classes? But I guess it was cause the devs were flipping through ad&d manuals back then and saw how crazy powerful they were in the tabletop in 1e/2e

That and in many ways the Red Mage was just outright the D&D 2e Bard without the magic and still holds up as such in most of its implementations
Bard 11 / Sorcerer 1 - You give up ZERO spell levels or Bard Abilities, but you can gain 4 Scaling Cantrips (ie. Chill Touch, Firebolt, Shocking Grasp, Ray of Cold) and 3 Level 1 spells that stay useful (ie. Jump, Fog Cloud) and Sleep via Dragon Subclass. With the cap at level 12, Bards are crazy to not take 1 level of something else.

Actually 5e Bards get no new spells or spell slots at level 12, they get 1 level 6 slot at level 11, which is why a 1 level dip literally has no disadvantage.
