The fish was still moving when he landed on that branch. I think he's making sure the fish has stopped moving, that it's dead and won't bounce around and fall from the nest nor knock a baby out of the nest etc.

From what I have very recently learned, the food should be completely "still" before it is taken to the nest so as not to disturb the nest or eaglets. Maybe he was waiting for that.

Not sure where you are located but many states have Eaglewatch programs under their Audubon umbrella. They will assign you nests to monitor and collect data on. normally requires about 30 mins of your time, every couple of weeks during the season. it's a great way to observe and record these beautiful creatures.

Amazing how it will not let go of its prey, I’m guessing we don’t have a clue how old they could be and it was probably a little tired and needed to regain some of its strength in order to complete the mission.. well done! Great video!

Eagles begin mating for their first clutch (Having offspring) around the 5 year mark. This was their first clutch and both eaglets successfully fledged ( Flew off to join other immature eagles. Thanks for your comment Salvatore.

The dynamics of perching on a branch is a lot different from hovering over a water body to catch a fish. And grabbing a massive fish , it becomes a problem to climb up the sky against gravity. It demands a lot of energy. So those eagles that grab a big sized fish often fly over the waterline to nearest shore lay down the fish to take rest . Grab it again on both the feet , thrust against the ground without slackening the grip on the fish and lift off. Again the problem of flying high against gravity. The eagle manages to soar high enough to land on a branch nearer to the nest where the young nestlings are eagerly awaiting their meal. But so near and yet so far. Perching on a branch is different from landing on a ground. You have to wrap around the branch with your telons . When you have a big fish you can manage it only with one feet the other is tightly gripping the fish. The eagle has spent energy to fly this high up and has to take rest, and also has to balance with one feet and has to safeguard the fish from falling off, so the other feet is engaged in wrapping the slippery fish over the branch without losing the grip. Now the problem of lifting off a bit more to reach the nest. With just one feet solidly perching on the branch , it could not give enough thrust to lift off against gravity with a load . The eagle patiently waits , recouping its strengths, wait for a thermal current or a gush of wind , balancing on one leg , gripping the fish on the other. With the right wind to help him to lift off , the eagle flies off , still gripping the fish, not high but along with the wind, away from the nest and catching the thermals soars up in a round about way and reaches the nest. What a relief ! Life always has a lot of struggles , and a lot of drama. Oops. What a video.!👍

Thanks, Paul, it's a great video. It is amazing that he is gripping the branch with only one talon and then he pulls the fish up and over the branch-adjusted it twice. His right leg must have been tired. How much do you think that fish weighs? Does anyone recognize what kind of fish it is? I'd say it's impressive to take off from a branch that way. It's not like swooping down and up when catching the fish. They're so majestic-it's no wonder it's our national bird. I'm glad we have a good amount in Connecticut and bird lovers are taking fantastic photos of them, but I haven't seen one yet myself...just a lot of Red-Tailed Hawks.

@@Grendelmonster8u if I had to guess the fish weighed about 4 lbs. Considering that's a third of his body weight balancing on a limb was quite a feat. Of course Dakatoh lightened his load a bit by eating some of it before bringing it to the nest. I hope you have a chance to view one of these amazing birds soon. Thanks for writing.
