    I live on the Eastern Shore of the Delmarva Peninsula - Mid Atlantic. I found a a couple of small saplings of Bald Cypress growing in my yard in a flower garden. No idea how it got there as I don't see any growing around here. Nearest ones I know are about 15 miles away. Anyway, I dug them up and put them into a pot. I now have two growing about 15 - 18" tall. I'm going to try to bonsai them. They are beautiful just the way they are but too bushy. So yesterday I did a light trim by taking off all the tiny branches growing around the bottom to about three inches up the trunks, and also remover a lot of tiny branches throughout their canopy. When is time in the fall, I'll do a heavier branch trimming and a bit of wiring. I suppose that I'll need to nip the roots too??? Off to do some more homework. Thanks for the good information!

    Can I cut the tops of two 3 year old bald cypress trees in my front yard to keep them shorter than my house, and in the process make "Large Bonsai" to keep it from getting too tall ?

  • @ThatGuy-cs3nb

    The hilarious thing is when you showed the difference between bald and pond foliage you showed bald foliage…. Nope it was a dawn redwood foliage. It has the cone buds and baldies don’t have that and it has large comb leaves and bald cypress have very compact leaves. The tree you are working on is definitely a bald cypress but oddly enough I had a tree labeled a bald cypress at Lowe’s but it was a dawn redwood. The buds are completely different just like the size of the foliage is too. Great tree there tho

    Jerome, I am currently styling my Bald Cypress. When selecting the flat top branches, Do you try to not have more than two branches at the top because of future inverse taper? Your thoughts?

    Hi from Adelaide, South Australia. I have watched almost all of your videos and find them enjoyable, well presented and informative. However, as a relative newbie, seeing all of the advanced, show level trees that you work on is at the same time, both inspiring and intimidating. I wonder if you could do some lessons using material that we beginners can identify with, for example young trees sourced from a garden centre, that we can work on and derive some satisfaction from in the interim.

    Great video. I liked the carving of the dead roots, nice to actually SEE this being appied. To thicken that lower branch, will you let that branch grow more vigourously than the others for the coming years?

    Hey Jules, Thank you for your feedback! Yes, I am going to let the lower branches grow until they are thick enough and then I will cut it back and start building the branch.

    I'm in the Orlando, FL area and I'm confused by your comment that bald cypress goes dormant in Midsummer. Mine drops leaves in Winter, so that is when I think that it is dormant. Second, why do you defoliate a bald cypress, when it's leaves are already small? Plus why would you defoliate it when it is 'dormant"? Please comment.

    how do you correct that section at the top where the apex was cut? Will the new apex branch naturally grow over that or will it require shaping with a tool to make it look natural?

  • @WeareTheBonsaiSupply

    @WeareTheBonsaiSupply

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey Michael, I will let the new apex grow tall to heal over the cut section. It is almost healed already, one more growing season and the cut won't be visible anymore.

    Would the defoliating technique work on a Dawn Redwood as well? I live in Southern Ontario. The temps here now are in th 80s, 90s, 100s until the end of August (and maybe later). I have a 4 ft Dawn Redwood that I acquired last year. It's very healthy and growing well in a wooden box I built and put it in after I bought it. I just did some pruning back on it a couple of weeks ago, but I would like to get some back budding/growth lower down on the trunk. Virtually all of the growth in is in the upper 1/4 of the tree, with one long branch at about 1/3 of the way down the trunk that has all it's growth out on the tip of the branch. Thanks, and keep up the great videos. Bob

    I have a BC in water, do I live it in water during the winter or pull them out? We don’t freeze much maybe 5 times if anything. I’m in south Texas. Also the roots have started growing out of the drainage holes, is it ok for the roots to be exposed during the winter? Thanks!

    I am pretty confused as to when to defoliate a tree? Every time I prune it? Every time I repot it? Every time I rewire it? It seems you defoliate every time you do any work on a tree.
