Bald Cypress and Dawn Redwood - Tree Tour Series
Ойын-сауық
Learn the similarities and differences between two wonderful trees that can live up to 1,000 years: Bald Cypress and Dawn Redwoods.
Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) is a native long-lived conifer that drops all its needles making it "bald." In the fall, they turn a russet color. Bald Cypress trees can reach 50 to 70’ at maturity.
Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) is sometimes confused with Bald Cypress. It is a fast growing conifer but the foliage is larger than Bald Cypress foliage and its leaves are opposite.

I just planted a Bald Cypress tree in my yard. I'm in Everett, Washington
Interesting...I have had a dawn redwood growing in my backyard for over 20 years and it is around 40 ft. high or so, or at least I thought that is what I bought when it was just a twig! Well, looking now at the different branches and the size of the leaves, I realized it is a bald cypress and they fooled me by shipping the wrong tree! It is still beautiful and I really love it so only slightly disappointed! lol
Also, if a bald cypress is good for your yard, a dawn redwood would also probably work great as well.
I have planted Bald Cypress and Coast redwoods at the same time in the same area, the Bald Cypress is huge already the trunk is about the size of a large bucket and its tall as a wooden Telephone pole, meanwhile the redwoods I planted its trunk is still smaller than a 2 liter bottle diameter and its only about 17 feet tall. and people say Bald Cypress is only medium growth tree? seems pretty fast to me!

That’s interesting, how many years ago did you plant them?
