One more thing people, after you pour the syrup on the baklava, DO NOT COVER IT! It'll steam and make the baklava soggy, I've made baklava about 7 times, and the first time, I covered it and it got soggy, then the second time I didn't boil the syrup long enough so it didn't get absorbed by the pastry, and also the syrup and pastry were both hot, so it was just horrible, so remember to pour the syrup once its cooled over the still hot pastry, then it'll get absorbed quicker and properly. Again, DO NOT EVER COVER YOUR BAKLAVA WHEN IT IS IN THE PROCESS OF ABSORBING SYRUP.

You're all welcome. Sorry for not replying, I didn't know you commented, good luck cooking!
I made this and it was inCREDible. Because I used store-bought phyllo dough it took hardly any time at all. Best part is it can sit out for a few hours and if people are late getting to your party it's still amazing later.
I made this recipe last night with my boyfriend as a date night idea. I cook and bake often, but my boyfriend doesn't at all. We each made our own batch from start to finish, and they both turned out amazing! We made the phyllo dough from scratch as per part 1 of this video, and we made the baklava exactly like this recipe. It turned out SOOO delicious. It will take a LONG time to make if you mess around like we were, but it was so worth it. Not eating it after it came out of the oven was the hardest part. We waited 40 minutes and had some while it was a little warm, but it honestly does taste better when it's just room temperature. Highly reccomend this recipe!
i want this as my last meal on death row, mainly because i´m allergic to any sort of nuts, cheating the system one last time

The Turkish version doesn't use honey, just simple syrup. The Greeks use honey. Wars have been fought over this. Chef John has taken the hybrid approach, which the Greeks and the Turks will hate.
@MehmetSinanBodur
3 жыл бұрын
As a Turkish I want to write something about origin of the word of baklava. Baklava comes from two indipendent Turkish words which are 'bal' and 'oklava'. So push the two words together, balli oklava turn into baklava. In Turkish 'bal' means honey, 'oklava' means rolling pin. So baklava is etymologically a Turkish word and also a Turkish food.
May the universe bless you, Chef John.

I knew a man who sounds like Chef John. He started as a disk jockey in college and majored in broadcasting. Eventually ran a small, local AM station and created a recording studio in his home. He did a lot of local radio commercials over the years and i always knew it was him when I heard them! Funny guy too!
Baklava always reminds me of Mom. For a Norwegian raised on a Wisconsin dairy farm, she was definitely the “exotic” one in the family. My cousins always like coming to our house to see what Aunt Diann was going to cook. I didn’t really get that until I was older. I miss her.
I believe of all the non-Turkish baklava videos, yours is the most visually authentic one chef! Nice as always.
As a person of middle eastern descent, I've made this since I was knee high to a grasshopper. A couple of tips: don't add the syrup to hot baklava - it will make the bottom soggy and chewy (unless that's what you want); Second tip: Use a glass baking dish so you don't have to guess the color of the bottom layers.
My grandmother used to say, "This is too pretty to eat." LOL .... My sister-in-law makes this with rose water instead of the orange/citrus water. Still very delicious!
I'm mostly Irish and Swedish in my heritage but my mom worked for a restaurant that made Baklava regularly. She became very familiar with the recipe so I grew up with this treat around the holidays. Since it's a Greek and Turkish dish I consider myself lucky that did have it my youth. Because it really is an amazing bite of food that should be on everyone's bucket list.
O.M.G. I made your Baklava last night and now I’m a super star cook among my family. It was simple and delicious and not very hard to make. Thanks a million.

Chef! First, thanks for the great recipe video. I've always thought of baklava as one of those too-delicious-to-be-made-by-me recipes. Second, I didn't wait the five minutes after pulling it out of the oven, and the reaction of the syrup being poured over the super-hot pastry was phenomenal! I guarantee you'll get far more accolades from friends and family with that show than by waiting the five minutes. The baklava was still amazingly delicious. Again, thanks!
I grew up on this stuff. Mom always made homemade phyllo dough. It really is delicious and it truly was a labor of love to make. Thanx mom 💕
Just wanted to say thank you for your great videos (and sense of humor) Chef John.
This was amazing. Indian here and I made it for my Bulgarian friend's birthday and came out perfectly. The filo cooked a lot faster so I had to reduce the temperature but the flavour of the syrup was on point and overall very delicious. Got over in less than 2 days. Thanks a lot Chef John.
I am looking forward to making this. Baklava is my favorite. I have always been a bit intimidated by it, but no more! Thank you for sharing how to make this!
Thank an' a hat tip...wonderful presentation! Baklava is one of my all time favourite desserts since I was a young boy. My sister made it. Filo dough is much more available in stores than it was 50 years ago so making this at home is so much easier now. Rolling dough out on a marble slab with a marble rolling pin is more than I want to do!

Yup. And of course the recipes.
This looks awesome. My aunt used to make it like this and the only differences were that she spread the butter over the filo layers with her fingers, and when making the syrup after the cloves she'd add a little lemon zest. I'm going to try this one. Thanks for sharing your recipe!

Chef John, you're by far my favorite Chef on KZread. About the Baklava, as an Arabic person I say you nailed it. not quite like my mother's, but pretty close. :) much love from Algeria.

Sebastian Michelis I make baklava for you, and you do me like that?
Oh man, Chef John! For once I made one of your recipes and it actually turned out exactly like the photo. Taste/texture was excellent. I used store-bough phyllo dough and I subbed 5-6 drops of orange oil for the blossom water. At first when I tasted the syrup, I was worried that the orange flavor was too strong. But after the syrup-soaked baklava had cooled for a few hours, it was the EXACT right amount. Just as you described: not enough to know that it's there, but you'd know if it was missing. I was feeling a bit rebellious, so I tried brushing the butter instead if drizzling. I guess I got lucky; my dough held up fine, so I was able to get maximum butter coverage. I might add just a half pinch more cinnamon next time, and possibly boost the two middle layers up to 4 sheets instead of 2, but honestly, it was still excellent just as is. Thanks for helping me and the wifey have a lovely dessert after dinner.
I had the good fortune of being able to visit Cyprus this past year, and I was able to try some Cypriot-style Baklava, and my goodness it was absolutely perfect. Just a beautiful, delicious, wonderful bite. And all from this humble little street side wagon with a kind old lady selling them for cheap.
'One of the greatest bites of food in the world' ... Hear, hear; trouble is, I can never stop at just one piece ! Thanks for the two videos.
The man is creating fantastic content, and seriously upping anyone's food game who is willing to try, and yet people trying to cast shade because they don't like the way he talks. SMH. This is why we can't have nice things. Too many who can't, trying to tear down those who can. Keep up the great work, Chef!!! I love your videos ❤️

A Lebanese Jewish family I knew growing up in the 70's used ROSE Water in the syrup. I don't know how traditional or not that is but it tasted absolutely SCRUMPTIOUS! Thanks for all your magical recipes.
I made this following your instructions , and I have to say it's worth the effort !!. It was soooo good!

I love how you put the emphasis on the LAST syllable. It's almost like French but NOT quite. I feel myself getting ready for THE emphasis. You've stumbled onto SOMETHING hypnotic.

Coming from the south of France, I was not expecting orange blossom water to be the not well known ingredient 😄 Chef John, you're my hero, I love baklavas and now I can make them!

Baklava is one of the best desserts in the world. For my taste buds and texture preferences, it's absolutely the perfect dessrt imo. I love cinnamon, I love nuts and I adore pastry. Fantastic combo. I salute the original baklava creators lol
Thank you again not only for the Filo dough, but the baklava!!! I haven’t done this in years so thank you for showing it to other people!!! ❤️🌈🇵🇱👩🍳🇺🇸
