  • @Hobbyrian

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi, no I don't. But you just turn your oven on and put the thermometer in. Let it heat for 30 minutes or more until you get to the right temperature. Then check the temperature every 15minutes while baking (don't open the door unless it is to hot in there) your item. You can leave it in the oven to cool down when you are done or you remove the entire tray and let your item cool down in room temperature. I'm glad you liked the video :)

    This is so helpful thank you! I followed the packet instructions and the thin earrings I made still snapped straight away. I lowered the temp of the oven slightly to 110c because it is a fan oven. Is that correct or would you advise against that please? Thank you!

  • @Hobbyrian

    @Hobbyrian

    If you have problems with the earrings snapping, you need to have a higher temperature or longer time, maybe both. Lowering the temperature will not help, it will make it worse. You really need to use an oven thermometer. The temperature is the important factor. And it should be the same no matter what kind of oven you have. Try this exercise and you will learn a lot about baking and get to know your own oven. hobbyrian.se/i-challenge-you-to-a-polymer-clay-bake-off/

  • @Hobbyrian

    @Hobbyrian

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes, you should use the higher temperature. Fimo even says on the back of the package that it can be baked at 130 Celsius just like Premo and Cernit. Some lighter colors of Fimo can darken a little bit if you are not careful but that is usually not a problem. I make cake toppers with a mix of Fimo and Premo. I would not mix Kato with other lower temperature clays though. There is a to big of a difference in temperature there.

    Fimos recommended temperature for baking is on the front of the package 110C but at this temperature, the result will not be super strong. To get a strong and durable result you need to bake at the temperature from the back of the package, 130 C. But baking light-colored Fimo, especially white, at 130 can darken the colors so you absolutely need to cover whatever you are baking with a piece of paper, foil, or whatever you use. You should also bake for longer than 30 minutes, as the video recommends.

    Hi, I don´t understand fully what 2 hearts mean but you can bake it for longer if you think it is needed, add 10-30 minutes. As long as the temperature is right you can bake for a long time. The thermometer is very important, check it every 15-20 minutes. And keep it under the paper so you the temperature closest to your journal cover.

  • @Hobbyrian

    @Hobbyrian

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes on the SculpeyIII package that is what is says. The Premo says 30 minutes. Remember that when they write the recommendations they have to consider that many of the customers are parents with kids that do not use a thermometer and may have a really faulty oven. An oven that may work with food but not so good with clay. So they recommend a "safe" temperature and time. If you want a strong result 15 minutes is never ever enough BUT SculpeyIII is a weak brand and is best used for solid things like beads. Thinner things will break even with proper baking. I suggest that you do this baking challenge to learn more about baking and it also helps to get to know your oven and your brand of clay. hobbyrian.se/i-challenge-you-to-a-polymer-clay-bake-off/

    Hello, very important tutorial and a MUST to baking correctly. I believe, there is one more factor which is equally important to have in mind, and this is the conditioning of the clay. In my opinion, If the particles of the clay are not conditioned properly, this will also cause the project to snap, no matter if the temperature is correct or long baking. May I ask something about the thermometer. Where in the oven is it correct to place it? To be honest, I use 2 thermometers 😊 Thank you for your advice.

  • @Hobbyrian

    @Hobbyrian

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you! I totally understand why you may think that conditioning is a factor in the strength of the final product since it is often repeated but that is actually a myth. Baking and a strong brand of clay are the keys to a strong final product. I actually made a video about that too, check it out kzread.info/dash/bejne/nKqfkqmCqNDUeJM.html Over-conditioning will instead introduce air bubbles into the clay, one only needs to condition until the clay is easy to work with, and that´s it. As for the placement of the thermometer, the best place for it is as close to the items you are baking as possible and if you cover your work, under whatever you use to cover it. You want to know the temperature where the clay is not anywhere else in the oven. Using 2 thermometers is not bad, especially if you are just starting to get to know your oven.

    @Hobbyrian, thank you so much for your response. I mostly agree with you. I remember my first projects would snap, after having dedicated hours and love to make them, you can understand the disappointment. I agree that the right temperature and long baking are the important factors for a strong project. Having said this, I remember when I first followed a tutorial some years ago, we were told that proper conditioning plays an important role in the result of the project as well. Proper conditioning to the point, when folding the clay, you shouldn't see any cracks. My oven is not accurate so definitely I needed a thermometer. But to be on the safe side, I use 2 thermometers 😂

    So, baked clay should be flexible?

  • @Hobbyrian

    @Hobbyrian

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well, how flexible the clay is will depend on many factors. Thickness and brand are important factors. Thick clay will not flex. The lesson is that properly baked clay is more durable. If your good quality clay breaks with a snap, it is underbaked.

    Does it snap when you bend it? Because, how bendy it is, that depends on how thick your piece is. The bending on it self does not serve a purpose but it is a good indicator to show if your baked or properly or not. So if your piece doesn't snap, it is not a problem. It is probably just a bit thicker than the ones I used in the video

    Yes, it does. And on the back of Fimo, it says 130c so you see it is confusing. They recommend a shorter time because imagine that there is all kind of people buying the clay. Like a mom that wants to do some craft with her kids. She may have a crappy oven also. If she was to bake without using an oven thermometer for 1 hour it will maybe burn. She will then contact the manufacturer and be upset. They have to make a recommendation that will fit the average customer. Most times stores/manufacturers put an expiration date on their products that are way before the product or food will even actually go bad, but its to save thier own a$$. It is not that it is hard to bake it. If you bake Fimo at 130C (265F) it will be strong. Look at the back of the package and you will see that 130 is even mentioned there. But at 130 the lighter colors MAY darken and the white may turn pinkish. So I always say that if you want your white to be white, just avoid Fimo in white color and use another brand for white (or all together)
