Can confirm the “started making it. Had a breakdown. Bon appetite” meme absolutely made it to the US. It was hilarious seeing people that I KNOW are clueless about James and bake off using/sharing it 😂😂

The Samaritans is a s*icide hotline. So that bit of context makes this story way worse than if it was a counsellor. It just adds abt how sad he was. I’m glad he can turn something tragic into a story like this and take the weight of it off. He’s just brilliant.

"Old lady whoever you are" That's Sandi Toksvig, she's an absolute legend!! One of the cleverest people in Britain, sort of a female Stephen Fry

12:39 - that “old lady” is the host of QI, which you should definitely check out sometime. It’s another British panel show and a lot of former (and future, for you) Taskmaster contestants have been on it.

Ehhhh, not really indicative of how much money you have. Growing up in Ireland I had designer stuff but LOVED going to charity shops. I went to London once and it was £4 per kilo of clothes and you could find insanely pricey things in a heap of fabric. Never even worn before.

i kinda want to hate Rylan but ugh he's such a sweetie. Went from suspicious to genuinely sad he's not on a full Taskmaster, they got some really good ones that year. the "old lady, whoever you are" is Sandi Toksvig, an actual legend and icon. Was booted out of being patron of the Save The Children charity when it was revealed she was a lesbian in the 90s, but otherwise remained a staple on weird quiz comedy panel shows and hosts QI now after Stephen Fry. Like the Ellen that didn't turn out to be a monster.

James is amazing, his stand up is incredible. It's sad though how much he has struggled with mental health. So many comedians and comedy actors have been in that situation, in their private lives they are very depressed and mentally ill. They often use their experiences in their comedy material. Robin Williams and Richard Pryor spring to mind. I hope he is past it all now and coping better these days. I think he has some stand up shows still available on UK Netflix. Or look up the clip of 'the absurdity of the British empire'.

He actually said at one point on the cold lasagna special, that he already deal with all of that in therapy and is not using his stand up as a way of dealing with it, because it is a thin line between comedy an tragedy and he actually had someone crying and coming up to him saying "I know is difficult" so he tries to be very clear that he is much better now, and I think that's so brilliant of him making us laugh and relate to his mental health struggles without feeling guilty, or devastated. With that said, is still hard for me watch the bake off episode without feeling bad for laughing, knowing now what was going on in his life at the moment.
