Really agree with you. CMA is too dangerous for free sparing because as one Bajiquan master ever said that "in CMA, you are being hit in the area that you are most afraid to be hit of". And hitting targets in CMA are soft, weak spots of the body that cannot be trained such as eye, throat, groin and joints. If someone punches the opponent in the stomach, and the opponent has trained and developed good and strong abdominal musculature, most likely the opponent could bear the punch and not be affected by it. But if the punch is directed slightly lower at the groin or testicles area, I think even Mike Tyson could not handle it! And practitioners of CMA train daily these kinds of punches and kicks (which are deemed "dirty" punches and kicks by the combat sport rule) until they become a reflex. Therefore, all CMA practitioners who want to free spar with others, usually ends up with Sanda-like fight.

Very true. Some people don’t understand this and that CMA is for live death situations. Free sparring using CMA attacks will always result in injuries.

I disagree with the idea that traditional CMA did not spar as there are many instances recorded in the last 150 years where people did spar and exchange ideas also Li Shuwen did spar someone from Shaolin when they opened up one of the Guoshou institutes and theres a record of it

We could have different definitions of free sparring. Here in my video, what I meant is for daily training. Especially in Bajiquan. You could mean something else, like sparring with someone you don’t know to see who’s got the real thing. In an interview of Li Shuwen in the Republic of China era, the reporter asked him if he met someone highly skilled. He replied yes but they didn’t spar because they already knew each other.

Really liking your content! Would you mind saying your lineage? If looks like different students of Li Shu Wen had different influences and different lineage have now different characteristics, right?

My lineage is basically Mengcun. My teacher also taught us classical Bajiquan from Li Dazhong lineage. All lineages came from the same source. But different developments started from the third generation. The Li Dazhong lineage Bajiquan is the least changed. Li Shuwen is from the Zhang Keming lineage. They added some poses to Xiaojia.

Does the shadow boxing/combo moves work on bag practice? I actually did a lot of practice with single moves on my heavy bag. Bianda is a pretty hard single move to practice of the free standing punching bag though. Recently I've been trying to find a way to attach arms on the bag which might also facilitate the practice of the bao move.

Yes of course. But not necessary. Speed over force in shallow boxing.

first of all, sincere thanks for your lesson, Master. Your judgment is certainly authoritative and rational. However, without any controversy or criticism, I ask a question. There are martial skills, such as timing, calculating distances, reflexes etc. who develop very well fighting in training. Ba JI Quan is certainly an extraordinary discipline. Do BJQ use any form of training to develop these skills?

As much as i agree with sifu,i think some degree of free sparring is still necessary in proper martial arts lessons, even if it would be a modern adaption. Nowdays, people don't really have fighting instincts as we live in "easy times". For them to develop the very basics of fiighting ( I mean >>>VERY

I see your point. I’m making the second part discussing in more details the different stages in Bajiquan training. That involves sparring routines, what are those routines etc. And that’ll help people understand the whole picture of Bajiquan training.

Meanwhile, Western practitioners are bringing sparring back that prevents the style from being outdated. Soon it will have a new name and replace Baji.

South Shao Lin forms stress on conditioning training. The forms are usually long and emphasise breath training. Those are very beneficial to physical and Qi development.
