Baiga Women and Body Decorations: Ornaments and Tattoo Culture

Baiga is one of the 72 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups(PVTG) of India. Residing in the dense forests of Dindori, Mandla, Balaghat districts of Madhya Pradesh and Bilaspur, Rajnandgaon of Chhatisgarh, these Baigas have a rich and varied culture. The art and culture of these tribes is derived and controlled by nature. Each and every aspect of the Baiga’s life can be seen in these arts. One of them is the external ornamentation on their bodies and the other is the permanent tattoos etched on the Baiga skin forever. Considering happiness and sadness as the two sides of a coin and celebrating it in equal spirit, is an art which the Baiga have acquired through time. Pain as a from of celebration can be best seen in their Baiga tatto tradition.
This documentary explores the ways in which body art and ornamentation is a cultural practice among the Baiga.
