I was very surprised they were still being used myself. Sadly both of their 200's were retired last November. Now they have the 737-500's in service.

Agreed! The durability of these older planes is unreal. It's a shame to see them go.

Haha, I will make sure not to disturb :P It still amazes me the amount of sound those JT8's put out pulling up to the gate. I can only imagine if every gate had one of those planes like the good old says the airport would sound like a glorious / epic symphony. A Crj is so quiet, it can sneak up to the gate and you would never hear it.

I traveled many times in 737s like this one Caracas-Miami and also domestically in the USA. I have many sweet memories linked to these planes.

I always liked sitting just aft of the engines on the -200s. The takeoffs were loud, and the window vibration was something else. But the -100s and -200s were trusty whippersnappers.

Yes I totally agree, the engine startup is something to behold. The DC9 is better for capturing that sound because the engine is level with your ear.

Thanks! I thought for some, it would be a little more viewer friendly to compile everything into one video.

This is a real throwback...I think I only flew on the 200s a handful of times and I'm FROM the Bahamas, haha.

Yes that is a great part to sit. I had planned this trip to sit in front of the engine going to NAS, then I booked just behind the engine (NAS-MIA) but sadly that flight was subbed for a Q300 :( I was very much hoping to record the clam shell reversers.

How can small engines like that Cary a Boeing 737?!

  • @eltfell

The size has to with the bypass ratio. The JT8D is a low bypass turbofan with a bypass ratio of 1,0. This means that most of the thrust comes out of the gas Generator. Here, this section is more powerful than such a section of a comparable high bypass turbofan. The empty weight of B732 is 28,25 t, its JT8D-15 have 69 kN. The empty weight of a comparable B735 is 30,9 t, its CFM56-3B1 have 82 kN. The bigger engines contribute to the higher weight. The weight/thrust ratio is almost the same being a little bit better with the old B732.
