Bagua 8 mother palms

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

An analysis of the basic principles of interception/deflection inherent inherent in the very "stem-cell" nature of the "8 mother palms" of bagua. I show some applications, but the reality is these are simply very "elemental" principles that I have come to understand from the 8 mother palms.
And by the way, internal practitioners who adhere to some sort of "woo woo" and don't like my "jins" etc. - please save your crap for another page. I don't have any intention to dignify your non-scientific delusions.

First time to watch something like this. It looks easy but I think it is deceptive, and far harder than it looks.

Hi Dan. I've been looking at various 8 mother palms and can find none that look like yours (though one site made a distinction between 8 mother palms and 8 animal palms). Many of the others are uniform to each other but the palms are very random in their sequence. One of the sites mentioned starting at the dan tien, moving out and up, then returning to the dan tien; but I could not see how they implemented this principle. This made me take a look at your form again. Your form demonstrates this clearly. Application is also very lacking on most sites except on a site called "Clears."

I found a video by James Sumarac which has only the first three palms and they are the same as yours. He has them listed as Pressing Earth, Hands Floating on Water, and Holding the Heavens. Are these the same and could you name the other five? These names are great for defining the feeling of the sets.

Ah, names of the palm changes are not my strong suit. I have them written down somewhere so I'll look into it and get back to you.

I have come across this again. How many different styles are there, and are there different forms within each style. I have watched one similar to this video but there are different palm positions, a popular one being lotus palm. There is also one where the hands are in the same guarded position whilst walking the circle but there is a form between the palm changes. Your last palm reminds me of Hung-gar's "man looks at mirror."

Hi Willem, I'm afraid I don't know how many different styles of bagua there are. There would be thousands.

Sir, I am not a professional sifu, but a high school teacher, i.e. a amateur tai-ji lover,. May I point out some of your shortcoming that you had exposed ( opened widely) your arm-pit, belly and lower part of your body too much, most probably could be attacked by knee, especially you used right hand to block your partner`s left punch verse visa, time taken was a bit long for fast punches like wing-choon. Wing-choon could launch several punches in seconds. On the other hand if you miss-judge the coming punch is not right but left (because you are not Bruce Lee that you could not read your partner`s mind) then how ? Take care !

Sir, I do many things and I'm sure I make many mistakes. But in this video I am not demonstrating "fighting": I'm isolating movements from the form and showing what function they have. This isolation necessitates some element of artificiality. I can assure you that when I fight (which I still do regularly - albeit with controlled contact) I do make an effort to protect myself - which includes guarding both the upper and lower body. I think that's more than can be said of the average internal martial artist who might do a bit of push hands at best.

+Wong Hohn Khew While I know very little about martial arts, relative to many others, and I'm a bit late to this conversation, wouldn't the movement side ways after each of these high blocks/deflections move you out of a arc for a kick or a wing chun punch? While wing chun punches are fast, they are rarely preformed well with the shoulder line pushed away from the target.
