••• ABOUT THIS VIDEO •••
Location: Protected Island, Denmark
Day: 7°C (44,6°F)
Night: 2°C (36°F)
For a little more than a year now, I have been working on this badger project together with a scientist from the Aalborg University in Denmark. We have various purposes with the project but my primary goal is to document the behaviour of these mysterious mammals year around.
••• WHO I AM •••
My name is Morten Hilmer and I am a professional nature and wildlife photographer.
I work as a ILCP photographer, and nature conservation is very close to my heart.
I have served in the Danish military special unit, the Sirius Patrol, for two years and that has given me the skills and confidence to operate alone in the arctic regions. I have spent two further years in the northern parts of Greenland meeting the local people and working on photography projects. My driving force is a sense of adventure and my fascination for nature, and my curiosity and empathy for other cultures has led me to many remote regions.

Beside being featured in publications and in my books books my photographs have been awarded in the Wildlife photographer of the year and European Wildlife photographer of the year photo competitions.

True dat! But unfortunately many wildlife photographers are only in it for the $. So they will never experience the true meaning of this job. Well, I mean you cannot even consider it as a job but rather your calling.

Hello Morten, I’m Peter from the netherlands. 63 jear old. I admire Your patient and efford to photograph these Badgers. Unfortunaly i am just a hobby photographer who likes to be in nature. I only have the weekends to be in nature because of my work. Hopefully in just 2 jear i can retire my work and be more often in nature just to be in it and maybe make nice pictures. Keep up the good work. Thumbs up.

Don’t these videos just make you hypnotised by nature😍
Your meticulousness inspires to the bone! That seeming absence of laziness. That stubborn soldiering to get it all just right. The quietness. Not in the least: the results. Obviously. World class. Your dog, the cat. I've been binge watching after just having discovered your channel a week or so ago. Also, the absence of morality; you're capable of letting anyone mesmerize freely about the many big topics related to animal life. I love that. I'm feeding off it.
Just stunning, love your videos and the way you make them, they are always full of beauty, tender and with a lot of poetry. Thank you very much for sharing them
Great video Morten, as always. At the moment in the UK, I'm photographing 5 local setts. Last year the one Sett produced 9 cubs. My favourite Sett this year is a new discovery in a secret and private woodland dell with just three cubs. I'm capturing some great photos and footage and the badgers are becoming bolder in the last hour of daylight. I'm editing 2yrs of footage at the moment with lots of close-up cub footage for a mini-doc I'm producing for release later in the year. Being in tune and recording the natural history at home or travelling is my passion, it is the greatest of gifts and I feel sad that others don't experience, in-person the moments as we do. This why it is our work shows a glimpse into these secretive worlds to the less fortunate, the majesty of the natural world is so important to bring to the people in such a troubled world, Nature heals the soul. If you ever find yourself in the UK and you need a room in a wildlife-addicted house in the middle of badger heaven just drop me a line. You and I are cut from the same cloth, my friend. Here's a still from my footage two days ago instagram.com/p/COKm7SWA4w1/ The best is being saved for my release date
First (I think) - yay! Couldn’t have been a better surprise than this. Just as dinner is ready. I know how I’m going to spend my evening. Lots of love Morten, from the UK.
Great work as always. I'm more into portrait photography, however, I find myself watching your videos, enjoying the journey as you go along.
Great work Morten! Next week, I will finally visit several badger setts over here in The Netherlands. I hope to feature them on my channel soon. I use a ZCAM E2M4, which shoots good video even at ISO 51200 with internal noise reduction (prores 422 HQ). I pair this mft sensor with a Nikkor 300 mm F2.8 and a speed booster. With the 0.71x and 2x crop factors included I obtain an effective 420 mm F2.0. Great value for money. I can shoot video up to half an hour after sunset, when the camera sees more than my own eyes can. An Atomos Shinobi helps me pull focus manually. See you out there :-).
Hi Morten glad to see you back with your video and missed you and your programs Fred
Morten, I admire your persistence and commitment. You are a real pro. I really enjoy your videos, stories, and tips.
What a wonderful privilege to be part of nature .Thanks for sharing it with us Morten .
Morton, my hat goes off for you!! To have your makeshift bed (being the hammock) awaiting for the Badger... All I can say is that's dedication at its best! I guess one needs to do what they need to do to get the shot. I so wish I was alot like you.. NTL, I've subscribed to your channel and absolutely love your videos.. talk about enthusiasm... wow!!
Wow, what a wonderful experience watching the badgers so close, they must know you are not a threat to them. Love watching the live camera with my kids too, thank you for these, they are truly inspiring.
We (my girlfriend and I) are watching this video in our lavvu before the crackling stove in our cold Sweden. Thank you so much for this video we appreciate it so very much!
26:05 😮 Magnificent
Damn, aggressive mating. He didn't take no as an answer!
Hej Morten! Mange tak for rådene om formålet med kontrolknappen, det er meget nyttigt og praktisk. Dine videoblogs er meget interessante, jeg ser dem hver aften med glæde. Jeg ønsker dig held og lykke i dit arbejde!
Morten, I think we are all very lucky that you share these videos with us. This particular video had everything I love about your channel - amazing images, in-depth information and a big portion of inspiration. I found your discussion of shooting in low light particularly helpful because it’s a problem I face regularly myself (although only because of bad weather, not because of shooting at nightfall!) Thanks once again for this and all the videos you’ve shared.
I knew it, Morten sleeps with his camera. LOL. Awesome.
Wow this video is FANTASTIC 👍 , badger are so intresting and cute 😍😍.
Was looking forward to this video ever since you mentioned it on the live stream. Your photos are always such a mood! And what a beautiful moment with the badgers. Hammock in the forest is probably the best office I've seen 😀
Wonderful video and great comments about photographing in the dark and how the mirrorless cameras now allow that. Had to use some of those same techniques with an adolescent leopard who was practicing attacking a dead baboon in the shelter of the some roots of the dry river bed after sundown last year in Botswana. The "zebras" showing focus really helped. Catherine Dalessio
fantastiske optagelser Morten.
As always, great video and shots! Greetings! 👍😉📷
Hi Morten, I am passionate about nature photography and I live like you all my free time surrounded by nature, you are a source of inspiration for me, even if I stayed with the reflex system with the Nikon d500, thanks
Your such an amazing videographer/photographer. Thank you so much.
You finally got them! Well done Morten, I'm really happy for you. What a moment to see them mate!
Very very nice! You have your own style of making videos and I think a lot of us really appreciate that. Also your patience is amazing. We all know it is needed when photographing animals but I believe most of us only got a fraction of the patience you have. But it pays off! And we love to see it. So thanks again for doing these videos. Very much appreciated.
Hello Morten, What a super video. One think I love your livestream pop onto in last night about 22:00 to see a Badger and a fox together in in the tree at the bach four little eyes and I think they were Pine-martins. Thank you fr all your work. Keep well, keep safe and be happy.
14:49 is so nice.
Morten, thank you so much for your videos
You are my favourite photographer.love from India. ❤️
You put in so much thought in what you do,and it all works out . Thank you for all that you can show us.Its awesomely beautiful!
I’m a fan of you I almost watched all your videos Greetings from Philippines
What a wonderful experience..! Simply magnificent.
Badgers are rare as they mate early in the spring but don't get pregnant until the autumn, it's called delayed implementation. Wonderful video again 👏
Amazing footage and images Morten. Thanks for the great advice in shooting in lowlight it’s always one of the big problems for us wildlife photographers. Cheers Keith
Hello... from Indonesia🇮🇩 Always watching your content very nice👍
Awesome.
Been so busy at work now that everything is reopening and seeing this just gives me the escape i need right now that wish i can go and be out in nature. You’re living the dream bro, hope you know when you share these amazing videos it gives people like me the escape that i long for who are trapped in that 9-5 job and aren’t able to get any time off due to work to go off and travel or even just go camping for a few days. Love your videos, keep it up 👍🏻
👍👍📷
respect!!! I respect very much what you do You live what I dream of
Thank you. Nice to see what went into your photographs. When we watch wonderful documentaries about animals, we just get to admire the result, but rarely is it ever talked about, let alone shown, that often wildlife photographers spend decades working hard just to get that second long perfect shot. That takes a lot of passion and dedication 😊
Great video as ever, as well being informative. 👍
I thought that badger photography was the best part.. It was great but the icing on the cake was listening to your photography techniques in " behind the scenes". That was awesome.. The technique you were discussing with ease can easily cover a lifetime of experience... Thanks for the wonderful video and the science behind it...
Wonderful stuff Morten! Thanks!
Well Morten, That looked like an excellent video. Two observation about nature, one the mating was cruel and barbaric and two the poor creatures must get no rest from fleas and parasites. Unfortunately I couldn't hear aword you were saying while you were shooting the Badgers and though I heard a good bit of your behind the scene segment, missed quite a bit of it as well. Thank you very much for making and then sharing the video.
wow!!!....Could be a fantastic experience. Regards from Chile
Another great video Morten. The tips are very good.
Great video Morten. Took my first pictures of badgers last week, what a joy to observe them in real life instead of the night footages I have been getting on my trail cameras. I was shooting at Iso 32000 so images are noisy but I 'm impressed on how the Z6ii handles low light compared to the D500.
Beautiful material, beautiful photos and beautiful history! Excellent work Morten :D
Hello Morten, I'm a hobby photographer from Germany. This is another very nice video of you. Thanks a lot for this.
Thank you so much for sharing your insights for shooting in low light and for the information you gave us about the Badgers. I admire also the respect you give to the wildlife around you. Your live 24 hour camera at the creek is such a refreshing daily visit also! Best of luck to you! Forrest in Tennessee
Always brilliant and the go to wildlife channel
Another great video. Thanks for sharing. 👍
Thanks Morten! I loved the behind the scenes segment. I have the same issue with freaking out of ISO when shooting OWLs. I need to start staying longer and just say to heck with the ISO and let it climb. Great tip on the pano stuff. Totally didn't even think about that for the end of the day.
hope you cross 1M soon
morning heist magic
Midday treat: watching Morten’s vlog while lunching on some ceviche and kombucha. The days are getting a lot warmer here in the Northeast but it’s still cooler to head out in the mornings. Thanks for keeping the inspiration going! 🙏🏼🤗👋🏼
I enjoy this video a lot Morten...very nice 👍👍
Lovely film Morten. I feel your frustration regarding the low light and the fact that the Badgers wont show in the daylight. I've been working on a sett myself and have adopted the use of a continuous lighting set up which has been a revelation. The use of two small LED panels has given me the opportunity to get some great images that otherwise I wouldn't have been able to achieve. This has been a much more acceptable method than the thought of using flash. I have made a short film on my channel highliting the technique.
Nice stuff morten 👌
WoW beautiful and excellent work
Excellent video, Thanks for the insight into the way you get to take and see your images.
I learned to accept noise in images. The landscape part of my brain is exploding but the wildlife part is happy to get the shot.
Fantastic!,!,! Love it!
Dejligt afsnit morten 🙂👍👍📸📸
Trevlig video och härliga bilder..
You are n.1 , compliments
Waited for pretty long but came out with this wonderful wildlife photographer with badgers on silent island....thank you
Another wonderful and unique video. Badgers are gorgeous little animals! Thank you, so much!
Ur video gives me motivation to do photography
Glad you got to see the badgers and get some photos and some really useful tips Thank you
Another excellent study in real natural history.. You have captured the feeling of being there and shared it.. As far as being able to distinguish individuals I'm sure it possible when you have watched them for awhile. I have also been watching your live stream for a few days now and individual residents do begin to become familiar.
interesting, live video. I liked the analytics with a cozy atmosphere. I would like to see titles in your videos so that you can read and translate.
It reminded me of my years spent photographing badgers during the 1970's in the Cotswolds. By the way, badgers mate and reproduce via Delayed Implantation. So they can mate at various times of year, but the female will hold the eggs until she finally releases a hormone to allow the blastula to move properly inside the womb, to be implanted around the end of December. On another note, I've watched badgers during the day in Denmark. Mainly on Fyn (where I lived for 15-years).
Well done you are a busy man
Another option for high iso invest in topaz denoise, works brilliantly when taking photos at high iso unless your into grain and noise they do free trials and a few more products
Absolutely stunning! Badgers are my absolute favourite!!! Brilliant content as always.
I watched this while sitting by a lake watching the wildlife - like having a conversation with a friend. Thanks for the tip about auto/manual focus. I’ll try this with my new Z7ii.
Another amazing video! It's great to see just how much work goes into these projects.
great boss👍 I also like adventure. greetings from Indonesia🙏
Good Morning from New Zealand. Great wildlife Vlog, Great location & subjects , Brilliant images, thanks for sharing
Hyped for this one!
amazing photos
Always inspiring and beautiful imagery from you Morten 😊 you're definitely one of my big inspirations for wildlife photography
Another excellent video Morten !!!!
According to my wife, if I was sleeping there, my snoring is so loud that every animal on the island would know I was there.
Great video Morten, have you thought about putting out LED lights? Apparently it does not effect the badgers and they are not nervous because of them! - High ISO? Topaz De Noise will fix that! ;)
Morten, your videos are addicting, I am already looking forward to the next one. Thank you!
love your work, keep it up cheers mate!
Thanks for bringing us with you again :)
Thank you!
thanks for sharing, great video and subjects :) You may have actually motivated me to get back out with my camera. Cheers.
Thank you, these pictures of badgers are beautiful. And thank you because you articulate english language very well for a no good english speaker like me.
Simply amazing. 💕
Great work Morten. Amazing footage.
