Same problem with mine! When I feel it it stays on empty. When I start riding around sometimes it comes up to level but most time stays on empty. Thanks for the video I'm glad it's just pressed in and not welded.

Gravely mower absorbed gas into plastic and stopped floating. Read empty all the time. Replaced just the float. The amazing thing is I tested with water and it worked due to the water density (8.34lb per gal.) being higher, but would not float in less dense gasoline(6.1lb per gal.)!

An interesting thing about it not working is it will work in water. I took mine back to the dealer and he tried it in water and it worked. I brought it home and put it back in and it didn't work. So I filled a container with water and one with gas. It will float in water it won't float in gas. Looking online and what the comments say is there is some problem with the white float. Something about the specific gravity/Relative density of the plastic (Google it). I am waiting for a replacement now, see if they figured it out.

Cheaper solution: Drill holes in bottom of float (the float is a solid piece) to trap air. My float on my bad boy zero turn would not float in gasoline. It just sank and read empty. It did float perfectly in water as expected since water is denser. I read about drilling holes since air is always going to float. The unit once pulled out is just a cheap snap together system. So I took it apart and drilled four 3/16” holes about 3/4” deep from the what will be the “bottom” side of the float vertically and parallel to the guide rails. Two holes on one side of the float and two on the other so when looking at the “bottom” of the float you will see five holes. The original hole for the flat shaft and the four drilled holes. Reassembled it with the drilled holes pointing down towards the bottom of the tank. Now when placed in the tank air is trapped in those four holes and up the float goes to the surface of the gasoline and gives an accurate reading. Just BE VERY CAREFULL DRILLING as not to go through the sides or top of the float. You are drilling pocket tubes parallel with the guide rails to trap air. Total cost: $0.00 and an hour of quick research to discover the drilling idea and doing the same to my float. I think buying another unit will just do the same thing in time and I think it’s from particulates in the gasoline (ie not changing your fuel filter enough or using cheap filters) cling and get absorbed into the float and makes it just heavy enough to float in gasoline.

The other problem on my 2007 Lightning is the indicator decal on the inside started to turn white, then back to normal black, then white....back and forth and now just stays white. Seemed to be temperature related. The fix is easy. Remove the sender and using a drill chuck and small drill, by hand, move the indicator to empty, quarter, half, three quarter, and full and use the drill to make a small divot in the face of the plastic at each of the indicated positions. Then take a black permanent marker and color in the divot. Saves you the expense of replacing a good sender, $43 worth, just to see the fuel amount.

Yep mine did the same thing to the T, works great out of the mower reads E in the mower. I think your right it must soak up gas and not float anymore other then that love the mower

Bing carbs have this problem. The float is seal coated and after some years the seal gives up an the float saturates.

2017 zero turn and my gauge started showing always full. Found that the solid plastic float quit floating in liquid. Replaced just the plastic float and works great. Now using a plastic part from a 20yr old boat tank. Go figure....

This is a real common problem. Mower manufacturers have no financial incentive to demand a unit that lasts longer since most are third party parts. I wish someone would demand a gauge that doesn't stick after only a few months.

Just bought a brand new Gravely compact pro 44. Fuel gauge stuck on "F". Do those fuel gauges screw off or pop off? Do I need to replace the entire fuel gauge or is a simple repair once I get the file gauge out of the gas tank?

Helpful and informative, but maybe you should have also not had the camera on while picking and pulling at your crotch exactly like my teenage son does when wearing athletic shorts. Just because it's a little freer in those shorts doesn't mean you have to make a public display of pulling on yourself. Sorry, but it kind of just turned me off the rest of the video.
