I should have elaborated more on my distaste for minimalism. I dislike a very specific type of minimalism which is, the plain, one color, sans-serif, all caps font pasted on a background. Minimalism can be a very effective tool to use for specific franchises and stories. The new Doom logo has nothing to say to me other than "Hey, I'm a Doom game. Clearly I'm serious because I'm missing bits of my text which must symbolize that this game is raw and hardcore!" I just feel like they could have done more with it, which they are with Doom Eternal. I'm gonna talk more about this in a follow-up. I just didn't want to sit here and make one long, 2 hour video about modern, "minimalist" design.

trends, it's just a trend 20 years ago the trend was to make every logo 3D and now there is the starting trend of vintage design. In 10 years the minimalism will be outdated. it's simply how it works

WordArt is not minimalist at all. Good minimalistic design is good. Shit minimalistic design is shit. Most good logos are simple.

Great job on the video, man! I had one thought about the DOOM logo though: the old one was beautifully crafted as you mentioned, but one thing I'll give the new logo credit for is the way it POPS on marketing material by separating itself completely from the game's colorful artwork that features vibrant and deep reds and yellows. That's the only reason good reason I could find for them changing it, besides just being easier to print on merch and other marketing stuff..but man that old one is a masterpiece! EDIT: I just scrolled down after typing this comment and realized a bunch of people had the same thought! Good stuff..

He’s just saying that it looks off to have letters in all caps and letters that aren’t. Make it all in caps. If anything, you should be talking about how he called 8 English when it’s Arabic.

You know what bugs me the most about the Sonic Adventure logo? That they clearly used a different font initially, changed it, but didn't bother to change the textured background to match the new font. Notice how under the 'v' and 'n' and next to the 'c' there used to be more pointed accents that don't exist on the updated text.

It feels like you don't really know what you are talking about. I worked at gaming sites in marketing departments for 6 years now, and I've created hundreds of banners, advertismends, brand integrations and specials for for tons of videogames and seen a lot of design guides and materials for them. Logo is not just about beauty, it's should be functional at first. It should be recognizable, to represent the game and it should work at many different formats. From small banner 250x250 pixels in size on a site, to huge billboards on a road, it should be instantly recognizable and readable. If you put old Doom logo on Playstation Store in a row with a bunch of other games people will just glance over it, becasue it bleeds into artwork. New logo however works even on Twitter avatar, because it's simple and clean. But you still recognize that it's Doom, becasue of it's shape. Same with The Crew or Far Cry 5 and The Last of Us (also you used secondary horizontal version of the logo in the video, main version of logo in three rows much more memorable and recognizable), but I can agree that A Way Out logo is too much on the edge of generic and bland. You can argue that designers can make detailed logos for big formats and simplified versions for smaller formats. Some games do that, but it muddies the overall image and there is always a possibily that someone down the line would use improper version of the logo. So in the end you can't judge logos by itself, it's always a matter how and where you would use it.

I get where you're coming from with your opinions, but the New Super Mario Bros and all the minimalistic logos are more "I don't like this" rather than "this is bad". It might look uncreative, but minimalism is sometimes very tricky to get right, and when it is done right it can look very attractive. It certainly isn't some crazy rennaissance art, but's it's readable and actually very trendy with most of the current market.

It's trendy because it's easy to make and doesn't take a lot of effort or risk. I don't fault companies for going this route, but those logos don't quite have the magic or personality of a logo done well.

Phoenix Dawn minimalist design is about conveying the core of the message using the bare minimum, this doesn't mean that all logos are automatically soulless and bland. Granted, some logos like Battlefield V's are a bit bland, and through consistency they have managed to become recognizable. But I find other logos like DOOM 4's very good, because you can tell that it's doom just by looking at the font. And the lack of detail and the contrast of the white with the rest of the cover kinda sets the mood for the rest of the game. I much prefer Flat/Minimalist design to the Skeumorphism that defined the 2000's and early 2010's.

I think it's pretty ironic how hard you attack minimalist logos considering you own channel has a very basic logo. Just channel name with a thick green stroke around it.

I took a design class and one of our assignments was to make two black and white logos for some fake companies and that was something just about all of us found really challenging. You’d think just from looking at logos that you could create something better. But it’s actually so much more difficult than one would think. There’s so much that goes into the thought process. I had to redo both my logos twice before I could hand them in without being completely ashamed.

I know the title says "video game logos" but one TV series that does logos 100% right is survivor, for each season they make a cool little new logo. You can search up the logos if you want but I like how creative they are, even with the ads, for example the latest season, David vs Goliath has super good ads and a good logo.

personally i love how the doom logo looks in the games intro, with a whole new version of the e1m1 riff playing and the white text screaming at you from the dark, bloody background i think it works great

To be honest, I actually really like the original Sonic Adventure logo. Sure, on the surface it seems pretty messy (especially with the unnecessary letter drop-shadows; that I’ll agree with you on), but upon further inspection and thinking about the game’s contents it actually does a fairly good job with representing what Sonic Adventure’s all about. Similar to the DOOM ‘93 logo, it told a story within its text, use of colours and scenery, mainly hinting about Chaos and the ancient Echidna Tribe civilisation.

Your channel has such interesting video concepts.

I disagree. The minimalist logos look sleek and sexy. Especially the doom logo.

Unfortunate how graphic design is down played with big companies. I live in a small convenience store, and I swear to god, I cant distinguish any of the alcoholic drinks we offer thats not either a smaller, or local brewery. The Buds and Choronas all blend together, with flat lettering and blending colour scgemes; while the "Raging Bitch" and "Old Bastard" we sell are always easy to make out and memorise I say this as someone who's never drank this stuff, but has had to stock it. I can point anything out on the left side of our beer cave, but god help me if I have to find the Name brand shit.

It's a minor thing, but in later logos some parts of the "New" star are placed under the text, making it catch less attention

I remember my mom and I were at GameStop a few years ago looking for something to buy. New Super Mario Bros was pretty old at this point, but when my mom saw the game on the shelf, she saw the logo and said, “Look! It’s new! You want me to buy it?” I still find it funny to this day.

The DOOM logo looks really good when you put it on the box art, title screen, and main menu backgrounds. The logo in front of the hellish colors woth the embers flying around looks awesome.

I don't think it's fair to compare wacky 90s logos of Mario and Sonic to the contemporary logos of Until Dawn and The Last of Us. These are completely different sides of the video game world. I would argue to most important aspect of a logo is to match tone, and - while they might seem dumbed down in comparison to Final Fantasy- you can't say modern video game logos don't do that. Video games have been around long enough for a refreshment in visual style, so fair enough that the Doom logo is as different to the original as it is. Imagine the fans of Doom, after waiting years for a refreshing Doom game, getting the same logo they got however many times before. Style changes with the time. As movie posters have developed from clustered commercialising necessities to abstract and minimalist artworks, video game logos must do the same. What's popular changes with the time as well. So if a minimalist style is what's popular, that's inevitably what will be mass-marketed. Of course modern logos aren't going to be the same as older ones, it's somewhat why the word "modern" even exists. In other words, don't expect the trend to die out any time soon, you'll only be disappointed. I admire that you're bringing to light a rare topic that I've personally questioned about for ages, but maybe a consideration of society at large would better support your arguments. Anyway, keep doing what you do and comments section, please feel free to rebuttal any points I've made. I'll admit I'm not quite as educated on the complete history of video games as some of you may be.

Minimalism is great in the modern age, but some people go way... way too far. I mean, yeah Minimalism is really slick, but you gotta add some flair to it too. Use more than 1 color. Maybe throw in a border. Make it unique for Goodness sake!

I like the "New!" in New Super Mario Bros precisely because it looks like an old infomercial. It establishes a continuity with the original, it instills the idea in your head like "this is gonna take you back to the 80s!"

@@chillplayer1234 logos are usually displayed on something like a the physical box or any background picture of some sort (like main menu backgrounds or ads). If you have a complex logo, make it be surrounded by a slightly more simplistic background. If the logo is simple, then it should be encased by a more complex background. You shouldn't have both compete for your attention. Moreover, with simpler logos it's usually much easier to get the right colors.

The new DOOM logo is basically just the same as the old but white, and I prefer it. The old one looked so tryhard, like "OH MY GOD LOOK AT THIS IT'S EDGY AND IT'S MADE OF TECHNOLOGY OR WHATEVER" gimme a break

"the numbers used in the english language" is a bit of a mouthful

8:17 ... But that’s the point. These are sci-fi games. They’re SUPPOSED to be futuristic-looking! Yes, Destiny’s logo is “meh”, but the way you presented that basically says this: “Game takes place in a futuristic setting? Slap a medieval logo on it! What? It’s a sci-fi game? Who cares? It’s sci-fi’s fault for taking place in a futuristic setting!” ..... Ya kinda just mutilated your credibility with a chainsaw, at that point.

I'd love to see a sequel to this video of you going over some of your favorite Video Game Logos. This video was a great watch!

Rocket League, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and even Fortnite have minimalistic looks. Also, they could’ve kept the awesome logo for Mario Kart going, but they scrapped the one they made for ds and made it minimalistic.

YES! Someone finally said it, clean and modern design sucks all the personality. I was so hoping you'd go in on Super Smash Bros Ultimate for its simplistic modern design tho'

I love minimalist logos. they look sleek and sexy. Also it doesnt suck out the personality. You got to remember that logos come with a background cover.

Scott is so much better

I really hated it when they changed the Darksiders logo for the second game and made it just some plain looking flat text. Really glad they went back to an interesting design for the third game.

Your intro and outro segments are very derivative of Scott the Woz. I liked this video but maybe make it more subtle next time.

The HD in the Kingdom Hearts logo is required to be completely capitalised because it's an abbreviation, but I can see why it's a little bit annoying that the rest of it isn't in capitals.
