    Brad Keselowski’s first 48 starts with Penske in Cup only produced 2 Top 10’s, but a switch flipped at Darlington in 2011 when Brad got a 3rd place finish. Penske began accepting more driver input for their program, and Brad was a contender from then on. If anything, he’s a glaring example of how you shouldn’t write off a rookie driver after a bad year.

    2010 was rough for Brad. The rivalry with Carl Edwards, multiple on track incidents, but since then he has grown into a proven winner and champion in the cup series. I still find it very odd that he’ll be going to roush next year. Who knows. Maybe he’ll build them into a contender like he did at Penske.

    Remember, that 12 car only said "Penske" on the hood because of the Viceroy rule, it was actually sponsored by Verizon... also I think that Atlanta flip was the catalyst for removing the wing from the CoT Edit: it seemed like Brad hit everything and hit everything hard in 2010

  • @JackTASM2

    @JackTASM2

    2 жыл бұрын

    I agree, it was definitely the Atlanta flip that was the straw that broke the camel’s back for the wing on the COT. NASCAR probably realized how dangerous the car was in terms of airborne crashes with the winged spoiler, so that’s why we’ve had the regular spoiler ever since. Granted, we’ve had a few airborne crashes (mostly at the superspeedways), but they’ve been very rare nowadays. At least from what I can see that is.

    Another factor in Keselowski leaving for Penske, besides Mark Martin’s ill-fated contract extension, was NASCAR’s new rule in 2009 that teams could only field four full-time cars. Keselowski had driven the Hendrick #25 (which had closed after 2007 and been replaced by Dale Jr’s #88 team) as the team’s fifth entry for a few races in 2008, and did so again in 2009 (NASCAR did allow a part time fifth car but it had to be driven by a rookie and in no more then 7 races) alongside his starts for Hendrick’s buddy James Finch. So while GoDaddy focused its Hendrick money in 2010 on Mark Martin, who didn’t really fit their brand, and on brining their main spokesperson Danica Patrick into Xfinity, it may have instead focused its funding on bringing the #25 car and Keselowski full-time. Of course this probably worked out for the best for Keselowski, being the fifth wheel at Hendrick was never better than being top dog at a slightly smaller, but equally as high budget team, like Penske.

    In 2010 it looked that way, but I think he had more long term success in the #2 than he would have had if he went to the #5 if Mark hadn’t decided to race two more years after 2009. Mark had a great year in 2009 but had off years in that car in 2010 and 2011. Kahne was getting outrun by his teammates a lot. MAYBE Brad would have gotten more out of the car than Kasey did, but he seemed like a perfect fit with Penske and Paul Wolfe.

    I can’t tell who had a more forgettable campaign in the 12 car, David Stremme or Brad Keselowski? Probably Stremme, I mean he had a pretty forgettable campaign in NASCAR period.

    I say Stremme for sure. Brad got 2 Top 10’s but it’s 2 more Top 10’s than Stremme had in that car. Plus Brad made up for it by winning races for the same team later while Stremme doesn’t have a single win in any of the three top NASCAR series.

    @@Gage_Brumley So with a new gen car, a lot of control in the team and a part ownership of it, and with prior experience of helping to turn Penske into a championship team, he couldn't be able to help Roush? Roush has been a mediocre team with Buescher running 18th this year but BK is running 10th, and that sounds pretty similar to how he'd run in an 18th place car with his talent. He made not only a great business decision but he can also revive Roush like he did at Penske
