Firm but fair, a perfectionist, *_FURIOUS_* when any of the lads didn't live up to his expectations, yet humble, understanding, the perfect father figure when necessary, generous when the recruits deserved it, friendly and supportive when any of the lads needed emotional support and a man who really took pride in his platoon... The lads were really lucky to have Sgt. Rae as their platoon sergeant.

@Anglus Patria there are all types of ethnicities living in inner cities with delinquent young adults. Most of them on the show are white, but it really depends where they're from.

  • @cun7us

    3 жыл бұрын

@Anglus Patria you just revealed your ignorance. Firstly, the show was shot between 2002-2006. Secondly, those "ethnics" are still British regardless of their background. Like I said, it depends where they're from. If you're talking about South London then yes, they would most likely be black, but if you're talking about up North somewhere then they would most likely be white.

@PETER KAMARU oh dear, that's sad. We used to love this series, all the sergeants dealt with their recruits with great good humour and kindness but there was never any doubt who was in charge... Sergeant Rae had great command and an air of fun too. Just been looking at the data for Bad Lads Army and a few of the recruits went on to make a career. Just watched the episode where Sergeant Rae is shouting at them "your MY boys now" and quite a few of the lads sort of visibly responded to maybe the first father figure they'd ever known.... He did then make them all shout "I'm a very naughty boy" in squeaky high pitched voices, but my goodness they did it without question.... Stand down Alistair Rae, your work is done... 😢

There was talk at the time of doing a female edition of the show, sadly never happened. There are some seriously bad girls out there and some seriously hardcore women in the military. And the reason the final series was parachute-based was because the MoD withdrew all support for the show which meant there was no serious military angle that could be used. Hence they had to go down the adventure training route or anything a civilian could normally do.

@@Biggles2498 And bear in mind Murray served in the Army a lot more recently (joined 1979, left 2001-ish), hence their experience was different to this fake 1950s version. Whilst conditions in the military were a lot better in the late 1970s than the national service days, I even read an interview with him one time where he said the modern Army had gone soft and conditions in barracks were "namby-pamby" compared to his day.

Murray looks like he's sniggering while Rae is delivering his monologue about aggression. That's not sun in his eyes, that's him trying not to laugh. There's another bit in this series where someone tells the lads that they're there because the Queen (as it was in 2004 and in the real 1950s) wants them there. Nauyokas is heard to say "The Queen my arse" before his microphone is suddenly turned down... when you hear it you never miss it.

I don't know how the British Army do their organizational structure for particular units but if i remember correctly, in U.S. unit organizational structure, a platoon is 20-50 soldiers, give or take 10 on the latter side. This would be a small platoon. There are at least 20 there.

Maybe your way of thinking is why you never went beyond the reserves. Also this show isn't real. I have no idea why you'd think it is.

Moondoggie It was taught to me by an officer. And most of the professional soldiers don't shout unless they have to. And boy do people shit their pants when they do. When I was a recruit at the beginning pf my conscription we got numb to the shouting of our conscript nco's and just stopped caring. P.s. I never said the show was real

My father was actually trained by Ali Rae in the OTC and said he was one of the greatest NCOs he ever had. The purpose of the show is to emulate 1950's conscription training, not necessarily to show the more modern forms of training.
