Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the Roland JP-8080. Is this classic digital 90s VA synth pioneer and rack synth / desktop synth sibling of the Roland JP-8000 keyboard just good for the legendary trance sounds and 90s rave cliches or can we coax some timeless tones out of it?
Thanks To Ingo from Bad Ischl and Ken Hayakawa for lending me this beautiful JP:

Humor ≠ Meme. I would just like to point out that I don’t follow meme culture or even look at memes (bc its mind numbing trash) and I got every single joke and nuance w without referencing any memes. I even went back and researched what I may have been missing. Nothing. Unless you stop following meme culture and using it to interpret reality at every instance you might as well just unplug your ISP and exclusively watch cable news on dish tv like a boomer or something bc you would probably, ironically be be more informed at this point. This is what internet culture is doing to people. Memes are supposed to be references to cultural familiarities, but here we are perceiving culture as a reference to a meme… which itself was a reference to begin with? Tf bro. Does anyone even think anymore or do anything without a meme to reference for programming? Wait, this is a talent? Lol. How terrifying.

Back in 1999/2000 made many nice tracks with this unit. Honestly can't find any flaws in the way this synth performs, it solved so many automation problems in a time when computers were slow and VSTi's were still in their infancy. The quality is still outstanding, even 23 years later. The Roland development team were on fire when they created this beast of a synth. Thanks for this wonderful trip down memory lane :)

It's expensive and has a fairly limited tone. There's tons of other VAs which can do a lot more. They just don't have the interface. When people spend a lot of money on something it sets expectations high. There's a lot of units out there with worn out pots because of the sort of people who used these units.

Good point about the V- Synth and the VP9000... Roland don't chase ghosts apparently, but have been doing so since the 80s (1988's R8 drum machine had 808 samples). This has become more and more pronounced, now Roland's current lineup appears to be 100% rehashed late 70s to early 90s classic gear. I'm guilty of supporting this too, I have a JU-06A!

I own the JP8000. It was my first of many synths. I still have it because of how simple it is to use and the great sounds that I'm able to get out of it. It can sound very aggressive when programmed properly. I'm a huge fan of the feedback osc, which is so often overlooked. I've also gotten some massive basses out of her. I have a patch I named "SlapYoMama" that is one of the deepest, subwoofer assaults of all time. I've also gotten some great, trippy pads out of her that have some very nice movement. The presets on this synth are super lame, but if you get in there and do some work (what's the point of having all those knobs and sliders if you don't?), you can pull out all sorts of killer sounds. Anyone who talks crap about the way this synth sounds has never done anything but scroll through presets.

@@AudioPilz I love these clips. It would be great for an AN1X bad gear review if you have access to that Yamaha VA synth that was in direct competition with these Roland JPs at the time.
I remember when this (and the 8000) was released, I wanted it sooo bad but my early 20 year old self couldn't afford it at the time so instead I got an OG Juno-6 (which was only worth $200 at the time in near mint condition). After all this time I never did get a JP, got a System-8 now tho so that fills my supersaw lust and more... sooo much more. Still have great love & respect for the OG supersaw synth even tho I never did get one.

Sys-8 is super powerful!
Could not afford one in the 90s, so i was happy even more to shoot a mint JP-8000 from the local classifieds for very little money some years back. Absolutely love the machine!

Nice find!
Sure it sounds thin, but thin sounding synths tend to sit well in mixes where there's a lot of other elements going on. Also a recurring theme I've noticed in these vids is your good taste animated movies

Thanks!!! Totally agreed!
I was really hoping that Roland would release a JP-8K boutique this year for its anniversary 😢

I have a JP-8000 that I bought brand new many years ago. It's sitting here on a shelf, waiting for repair. It simply might have a dead battery. I loved messing with it. It was a bit more powerful than their other 1-off synths, and had the amazing sawtooth waveforms. Nice color, too.

I never did much with the sawtooth waves, anyway, except mangle the fick out of them.
Great video

My JP-8000 is a weird one for me. I wanted to sell it so many times but every time I pull it out of my closet I just can't let it go. After a while it lands again in the closet and the the cycle starts over.

Same with mine, every time I get the "eh, I could use the money..." thoughts and land my eyes upon my JP8k, all it takes is one jam session of thicccccccc pads with a huge stereo spread across some good speakers and I've fallen in love all over again.

Plug it into a Virus TI and let 'er rip with the Virus reverb and phaser That'll give it a fresh vibe that'll send it straight into your next song!
Honestly, I really like this thing! Maybe I am biased as a super-saw fan, but this synth does away with menu hell and instead opts for a more classic knob turning approach to a sound I cannot get enough of.
