I had a classic Juno 106 in the 80s and 90s when I was in a group called Non-Aggression Pact. I sold it, and have mourned that decision ever since. In the middle of watching this, I was compelled to purchase a JU-06A!

One of my go-to synths. Sure it's limited, but it's a mini-synth. The small size and battery operation allows me to gab it, throw some headphones on and just explore. What it lacks in polyphony i make up for with other synths, bringing in additional textual layers.

The synth they used in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" was actually an ARP 2500 and the guy that plays it in the movie is Phil Dodds, ARP's VP of engineering.

I bought a JUNO 106 back in 1984 for $600.00 and a MSQ MIDI Digital Keyboard recorder for $400.00 later I bought a YAMAHA RX7 drum machine and a YMC10 tape to MIDI sync. It was the first time I used MIDI. It was amazing to sync the drum to the synth and sync record to tape. This was the beginning of Electronic Music. A few years later I bought a Tandy 1000 TL2 and a MIDI Maestro Kit which was an 8-bit card and a piece of software that recorded MIDI information and played it back. I don't remember how many tracks maybe 16 in line with the MIDI channels. Anyway, it had a piano keyboard display like an old piano roll. This displayed the notes and info as it scrolled by. Thanks for the video as always. It brings back fond memories of years ago.

I'm not sure what I appreciate more; the synth review or your razor-sharp humor & tight edits. At some times I felt the humorous meme-based inserts should have rested a beat longer to digest, but I know how comedic timing can suffer if you keep something up just a few frames longer. Great presentation and entertaining review - well done.

I'm VERY fortunate to have found an old Juno 106 years ago for a bargain price. I did pick up a JX-03 a few years back for the sounds. I can always double-track for more voices, but these little boutiques are a good way to pick up some classic sounds without doing everything in the box.

Same. I was a teenager in the early-mid 2000s. I thought old synths were cool. I was just buying them up for cheap because they were still sort of unwanted then. I ended up with a pile of them. Personally, I think they're way overvalued today. And yes they sound badass, but they're big, old, heavy, temperamental, etc. I like that one comment where someone said the JX-03 sounded "factory fresh". There is so much new stuff out there that also sounds awesome, even Komplete software.

The Ju-06s it´s a beauty. Unfortunately the polyphony is only 4 notes, but otherwise it sounds absolutely amazing and it's super easy and fun to program, from beefy bases to smooth synthwave style pads.Roland´s ACB sounds truly amazing and I use this little one all the time. You can make the Juno 106 and Juno 60 sounds in a tiny sturdy desktop synth and because you can get USB audio, you don't have to worry if you don't have or like to have a mixer.

I feel a v3 of this synth will finally give us everything we want - 6+ notes, audio in, proper screen and no hidden menus. Similar how the Volca FM2 fixed the issues with the 1st one. Roland, being Roland, need extra time to get things right.

Besides, it's a great tool to take out on a trip and make sounds on the fly with (in case you can't / don't feel like carrying a laptop).

After looking at the JU-06A and the offerings from Behringer, I eventually went with an actual Juno-6. After using TAL U-NO-LX-V2 for years, I can say that it is a better emulation than these newer hardware emulations while also taking up no physical space. Still, it is only 95% of the way there and Juno nerds can pick out the small acoustic differences easily. That being said, it is of course not a hardware synth and cannot inspire that level of creativity that one gets when fiddling with real knobs. For prospecting buyers, here is my advice: If you want the closest emulation you can get of a real Juno, TAL-U-NO-LX-V2 is something you should look at. If you want a hardware synthesizer with Juno vibes and doesn't totally break the bank, the Deepmind-6 is probably where it's at. However, if you want the true authentic Juno sound, there is still nothing out there that I know of that can accomplish that. Depending on the features and sound you want, a Juno-6 or 106 are where it's at. The Juno-60 sits in between those but at over twice the price.

I mostly agree, but think the System-8 is a damn good option as well. At least you get 8 voices there. It's also a great synth in its own right. But ultimately, I'm with you. Nothing would suffice until I bought an actual JUNO-6 last year.

  • @schmapps1

Personally, I feel like the ACB Juno emulation is right up there with Tal - they are both very accurate. The one thing I will say in the JU-06A's favor though, is just the quick hands on control with the sliders. Yeah, I know you can map midi knobs to the Tal software...but it just ain't the same. At least not in terms of feeling like a "hands on" synth. IMO

We did a comparison with an original Juno 106, and as long as we played only a single note, the sound was spot on. But immediately when multiple keys were pressed to produce a chord, the fatness of the original simply wasn't there, at all. I wish the Boutique had an oscillator detune setting to bring the fatness back!

I'd buy one in a heartbeat if it was at least a 6 voice; A pad machine with only 4 voices doesn't make sense. Deepmind does a good enough "emulation" for me and the 12 voice gives crazy nice trailing pads. I still really like the boutique line though, have many of them, and acb sounds really good for a hardware emulation. Having said that, Aira System > Boutique.
