    For modern music this thing kicks ass. Pick any almost any trap or Hyperpop beat and you can recreate the kick and the bassline with this little box. Producers kill for a choice of kicks like this. No other synth (unless you want to dedicate a whole patchable synth to your kick) rounds the sound like this.

  • @electrosonicnebula

    @electrosonicnebula

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Aaron Foltz I just sold mine but it is a fine drum machine indeed. Except for the scandalous lack of automation it's the coolest drum sequencer possible, with the dedicated swing and random dials and global/per track, that's how swing and random should be on all machines. You put in a super straight beat and start adding the random slowly until it taps you on the shoulder every once in a while.. Of course all of these machines reviewed here are awesome in their own way. One day I'd like a Roland DR202, that looks too good to be true with the hip hop and drum & bass presets, sampled drums, and a bass synth.

    @@dickwang7429 By those metrics you'd be saying a piano or bass are "bad gear". The music I'm most proud of has all come from the worst gear I own. My favourite keyboard is an early '80s Roland analogue electric piano that doesn't even come close to sounding "real". There's no such thing as bad gear.

    I never understood the hate for this particular volca. Back in 2015 I was trying to put together a live techno kit and the kick was exactly what I was missing in my gear. The fact you use the Jomox MBase 01 in all of your jams is a testament to how crucial a good solo kick machine can be. I ended up going modular for my set up, but if the kick had come out a few years earlier, it would be a staple in my set up!

    So true! A nice analog kick is essential!

  • @voltijuice8576

    @voltijuice8576

    My prior analog kick was a 2U rack with two Tama Techstar kick PCBs in it. They are a one-envelope kick but I modded them based upon a tip on hyperreal (back in the day!) to combine them into one two-envelope super-kick. Sounds great when it's set up properly, but it's finicky. The Volca Kick was a definite upgrade! Now that I don't need the Tama I might take the time to refine its mods.

    Have you ever reviewed a synth and felt it was not ticking all the boxes at first glance? Because if there was ever such a synth that was not ticking enough boxes, a synth that only ticked one box and was quite happy with itself for doing so, this was the synth that would be it. For to tick too many boxes is the antithesis of this one box ticking synth.

    Love the Kick. Ive jammed with it loads - yet to use it on anything, but am sure I will. I paid £79 for an ex demo one (including delivery) and its worth that if you just absorb that bass regularly as part of a course of treatment for depression! I would recommend the kick to someone with either plenty of gear or someone who specifically wants to create a minimalist portable techno rig. It is what it is and does a cool thing well, and for less than a eurorack kick module that would be way less flexible. I think the moral of the 'Bad Gear' channel has to be that someone with your talent can make music out of anything, and gear lust is nothing to do with music making. That isn't something I think we should feel bad about, some people have train sets. People hate on all manner of things, JX8P being a prime example, because it doesn't look 👀analogue, meaning there are unlimited shows left for you to make: 'At first glance the CS80 is ticking all the boxes' while forum quotes pop up on the screen about it being too heavy, not running on batteries and the behringer version being much cheaper and has midi. Happy new year Florian - thanks for keeping us smiling :)

    I had it for a few days after buying it at a synth fest when it first came out. I struggled to make the sounds I wanted and couldn’t get it to consistently play the same notes when using it as a bass synth, so I sold it after a few days, but I can see the point in it. Who doesn’t love an MS20 filter in a small box?

    I love my volca kick. Especially within volca ecosystem (Takahashi is a genius). But even past that it’s fun. I’ve got a jomox and vermona too, never mind an elektron Rytm, other drum machines and analogs and samplers, I’ll still break out the volca kick. Unique sound and the sequencer influences creativity on it. Way too many people, even dedicated volca users, missed out on this one.

    Most of my Volca’s are collecting dust except this one. It sounds great to crank the decay and layer it with a dry punchy Linn/707 kick. Also using it with MIDI/MPC is a great option as you can program the kicks chromatically(ish) on the MPC pads and use the CC’s to add slides and accents on D’Spot. DAWLEZZZ JAMZZZ 4 EVR.
