Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools.
There aren’t many software companies whose influence on electronic music is comparable to iconic hardware brands like Roland and Korg - Native Instruments is certainly one of them.
They defined the industry standard for sampling, established in-the-box modular synthesis and made using FM much too easy but today we are going to talk about Massive.
Putting this 2006 wavetable softsynth and primary ghost writer of the first three Skrillex EPs on the show is - quite literally - long overdue as, after the usual venture capitalist fustercluck and discontinuation of Absynth, it can only be a matter of months until this classic plugin stops working properly on contemporary computers.

Back when I was a teenager, I couldn't afford Massive or Absynth. But I had demo versions with a bunch of presets, though I couldn't save my own, and it would like... hiss at me violently every few seconds. So I would sample a single note into a very cheap sampler plug-in, using "Orion", one of the cheapest DAWs of the early 2000s. I got so much mileage out of this bootleg setup back then. I even faked some basic "sampler synth stuff" like automating the sampler's filter and basic envelopes, or layering presets samples of them to make my own "new patches", which I could save in the sampler plug-in because that wasn't a demo version m What a time that I never ever wanna go back to ever again!

This is so damn hilarious considering just how popular one-shot samples are right now. What you did with your bootleg setup is what I do with my actual hardware synths like my Moog One and JD-990 lol. I'll make my own one shots. It becomes even more hilarious when I tell you that I throw these one-shots right back into Serum, using it as a sampler, just to Alt. Pan their voices to get a wide sound, and sometimes I even modulate the pitch using Chaos to add wow and flutter.

@@AaronAlso Spectral stuff is really useful though. You'll see. Mastering, mixing, sound design, correlation, etc. GPU styled algorithms (that is, literally using the GPU for audio processing sort of stuff, like how games use super convoluted overrated algorithms to render a slightly better specular reflection, when I've already coded stochastic clipmapped non-linear raytracing sort of realtime stuff on like a nvidia gt 9600 and radeon 4850 15 years ago) with "photoshop" styled editing to make it way more efficient. I mean, you can kinda already do that, if you know what you're doing. The arb limitations in FL studio (and with FFT in general) are annoying though, it's like there's some inherent misunderstanding of why FFT kinda sucks. Perhaps I can alleviate that. But really, that's on Image-line. At least it's not unstableton. I do not know how to express my hate of windows 10/11. Words can't really convey that. Maybe nukes? Btw, did you know, if you render an image on a typical GPU, and all you do is jitter the camera position by roughly half a pixel (randomized vector) every frame, it's a lot like free antialiasing that continually improves (depending on the camera change)? That is, the image continually improves (coz you blend it with the previous frame) if it's like a "static" view. Ironically, intel and amd's IGPs are FAR more suited for proper audio than anything nvidia, no matter if you got a 4090 or whatever (I don't even know what they're called these days, but I will not buy nvidia).

I bounce everything out to analog mixer with tube pres on the inserts. 8 mono instrument channels from Abelton get mixed down to 3 stereo "master" channels. Most (not quite all) of my FX processing happens externally by dedicated units. Everything starts, converts, and ends at 24/96. I don't really have any reason to "fake the funk" and over tax my PC; no problems with conversion aliasing or quantization. I have dabbled in some Foley work where I had to use 24/192 to get enough headroom, but it isn't part of my usually workflow. These types of minor distortions aren't even remotely perceptible on short non-rhythmic sounds.

The LFO/Envelope/Mod Sequencer section is what really makes Massive awesome. I remember being super confused by Massive the first time I opened it up and tried to figure out how to use it. Then I watched a tutorial and realized how easy to use it really was. The drag and drop modulation source to destination implementation was a game changer and has been copied by several developers. With Serum, Vital, PhasePlant and Current out there, Massive is collecting dust. But it did quite a lot to bring bass music to where it is today and I'm thankful for that.

Massive X has been my favourite softsynths since it's release. The biggest issue with Massive X was the UI, which was simply unfinished at its release. The UI has become acceptable after a couple of updates, but it remains underdeveloped compared to other modern softsynths. The quality of the sound engine however is unmatched imho, and that's what matters the most in the end. No other softsynth I've tried can beat it, though Pigments is getting closer with recent updates (and beats it by miles with new features every iteration). It's a pity NI has apparently completely lost the plot, and has left Massive X dangling with only meagre updates and useless preset packs being released since its debut. The sound engine of Massive X is simply ahead of its time, and has so much potential, but NI forgot it also needs a modern UI to go with it, and the competition isn't standing still....

Massive X has the best sounding sound engine I've ever heard among all of top VSTi synths. The quality of the oscillators, filters, effects and the whole voice structure is absolutely outstanding. It delivers high definition sound in the highest possible quality. It beautifully sits in the overall mix with other instruments regardless of the sound type - whether it's a bass, synth, lead or pads, MX can do all of this. You can spend hours and hours with knob tweaking getting awesome and never ending timbre variations producing very fresh, juicy, modern and innovative sounds. MX covers everything - it can sound very analogish, smooth, dirty, hard, digital it only depends on your sound programming skills what kind of sound you are able to dial on it. Although there are other top notch VSTi synths which also sound very good and tasty, MX is still a level higher than anything else if we consider the engine sound quality and the timbre variability it can produce.

This video is better than most instructional and demo videos released by the developer and independently and it is very likely that is the basic problem of EVERY DEVELOPER! Kudos to you for smoothly exposing the real gorillas and elephants in the rooms! 🎉😂🤯☀️🤔🎯💯😳🥶😬

I basically finally left making music in AL, when Massive became too much of a resource hog to make really complex patches running inside a Live project, with a bunch going on elsewhere in Live, on the IBM notebook I had at the time. 2014 or so, I think. After using Live since 2001. So far, I haven't gone back to AL, or any DAW. Crazy how time flies by... The great thing about Live, is that it's still mostly the same today, as when I last made tracks in it, in about 2014. I would simply learn the new features, and be right up to speed. What's more amazing, is that plug-ins live Massive, are actually just redundancies, as Live is capable of all it can do, and soo much more, stock.
