Its a matter of taste, but: early Jennifer had too much eyebrows, and the face was puffier than later on. From "A Beautiful Mind" to "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (although the movie sucks, but so does The Rocketeer 😛) was her absolute peak. And, by the way, she still is one of the most aesthetically beautiful people on the planet.

This feels like that women’s retreat Fleabag and Claire went to.

I love Jennifer from Labyrinth. Why can't directors put her in very exciting movies!? This looks so dull. Bad behavior? It looks like I'll be asleep as I try to watch it. It's very quiet slow acting scenes by people being boring. I don't see bad behaviors and fighting. Stop putting a legend like her in stupid films.

Jennifer's character in Top Gun is, indeed, so very generic, and her performance (as shown) certainly made no pretense to improving it. Why did they even bother with an actress of her caliber for that role? Well, I'd guess Cruise is smart enough to know that hiring her gave credibility to a script in which that character, at least, was utterly superfluous. Moreover, it helped that she was technically old enough to avoid the all-too-common touchy-feminist critique of "age inappropriate" female love interest, but more than attractive enough to successfully carry off the part, notwithstanding. And, as a devotee, I'd say she's an actress who's always been very amenable to doing whatever and going wherever a filmmaker she trusts wants her to go (cases in point: Hotspot, Mulholland Falls, Requiem, Little Children). In the case of Maverick, they apparently wanted her to do very little and go almost nowhere... while smiling. Why did Jennifer take the job? Despite some really odd choices over the years (and to this day judging by this trailer), I'd imagine she's smart enough to grab the gold ring when it's dangled: a very high profile movie with a sizable payday. But who knows? Maybe she's a Tom Cruise fangirl: he actually did take her up in his own P-51 Mustang. I agree that she was at the top of her game in House of Sand and Fog. She's been beautiful and she's been brave. She's been good in good movies and, occasionally, even better in mediocre ones. There are just those actors and actresses who do have real success when younger, continue to do fine work pretty steadily throughout a long career, but seldom again land in the proper vehicle for their talents. Here's hoping Jenny gets better scripts... or a better agent. Happy new year to all.
